1 Weekly News 18 th September St Peter s Church, Cambridge Road, Harrogate, HG1 1RW A Missing Piece of the Puzzle Why did people in the first century think it was a good idea to join the Jesus movement? The answer is likely to be a combination many factors, but one that interests me particularly, is the role played by very early Christian worship and eating. This provokes another question: what do we know about the worship of the early Church especially in very earliest years of the movement? Until recently, the answer to this question has been very little. In 1998, however, I uncovered a text that promises to change this situation significantly. In AD 49 James the brother of Jesus wrote a letter to Gentile believers in Antioch setting out, among other things, some basic instructions for worship. The recovery of this document answers lots of questions about how the first Christians worshipped and, in turn, begins to answer the question: why did people join this new movement? 2 Harrogate Male Voice Choir Harrogate Male Voice Choir will be performing a joint concert with Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support this week. The concert at St Peter s Church starts at 7:30 pm on Saturday 24 th September. Tickets cost 10 each or 15 for a couple and are available from P&C Music, 6 Devonshire Place, Skipton Road ( ) or from John Corrin ( ). St Peter s Players St Peter s Players are looking for anyone who would like to join them for their next production in November, which is to be a variety show plus two short plays called It s Showtime. Help is particularly needed for supporting roles. Please contact Moo Alcock on if you are interested. 3 WANTED New Recruits for St Peter s Flower Team The pedestal flower arrangement standing to the left of the nave altar is lovingly created each week by a member of St. Peter's Flower Team, and right now they need some help in the form of new recruits. Whether or not you are a professional flower arranger, just like doing things with flowers, or even think you are of the 'pick and plonk school', doesn't matter. We are a friendly 'bunch' - yes, the pun was intentional - and one of us will be available to hold your hand, and give as little, or as much training as you want, until you feel able to 'go solo'. The rota isn't that onerous, and if we can add 2 or 3 people to our merry little band, it means you would only be arranging the flowers every 2 months or so, on a Sunday to suit you. Please have a think and have a word with Sue Heapy if you feel able to help us. We need YOU! Bring Your Pet to our Animal Service Our annual Animal Service this year is on Sunday 2 nd October at 4:30pm (refreshments will be served from 4:15 pm). All animals are welcome, or just bring a photo of your pet, for a blessing. Leeds2Iraq Appeal 23.5 million refugees in the Middle East are in need of humanitarian help. Displaced families are living in makeshift tents, abandoned buildings and sheds. Many babies and young children will die this winter from hypothermia. This month the Samara s Aid Appeal are collecting life-saving supplies: winter clothes; new underwear; clean shoes, boots and wellies; blankets, sleeping bags, sheets and towels; Moses baskets & baby bedding; disposable nappies etc. please see samarasaidappeal.org for the full list and more information. Everything must be in clean, excellent condition. St Mark s Church, Leeds Road, are collecting donations from 18 th 22 nd September. 7 St Peter s Library Book Review The Book of Witnesses by David Kossoff When I was asked to write a book review in 200 words or less for the Weekly News, my immediate reaction was, Ask me again in 3 or 4 months, as, with all the other reading material I have on the go, it might take me that long to get round to it! However, re-discovering this book in the old Baptistery, I offer what follows: This book tells the story of the life of Jesus, from the Annunciation to the Resurrection, by narrating a specific incident from the point of view of a witness. Of course, these witnesses are fictional characters, being the relatives or work colleagues of those who were there at the time. Some are believers, whereas others are not, although any of them could be one of us, had we been born in that time and place. Kossoff asks the reader to remember that even though the witnesses are fictional, At least that of which they speak is true. It is Gospel Surely an interesting comment from the late, highly respected Jewish actor/writer/broadcaster?! There is no heavy theology in this book, and it s a very easy read. As long as the reader has a reasonable knowledge of Jesus life, they will breeze through it. A basic grasp of the political, historical, and social situation in first century Palestine would make it even more meaningful. I found certain witness accounts very useful when I was still teaching, with years 7 and 8 in high school, and in particular commend the final two accounts of the Resurrection from Zeke and Maron. Some may find the manner in which the former tells his story mildly irreverent, but to my mind, it is all the better for that! Enjoy! Oops, that s 300 words plus one!
