Refreshments are usually served after the 9.15 am service at St James and after the am service at All Saints REFRESH An informal gathering for discussing things of faith and for worship. Join us in the front room of the Golden Lion on the High Street This evening, 10 February, at 5.30 pm. The topic will be 'Who do you think you are? All welcome - why not bring a friend? 3 PRAYERS AND READINGS FOR TODAY S EUCHARIST Collect Lord of the hosts of heaven, our salvation and our strength, without you we are lost: guard us from all that harms or hurts and raise us when we fall; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. First Reading Isaiah 6: 1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts! Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I; send me! Psalm Psalm 138 R R Great is the glory of the Lord! I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I will sing your praise. I will bow down towards your holy temple and praise your name, because of your love and faithfulness; For you have glorified your name and your word above all things. Great is the glory of the Lord! When I called, you answered me; you increased my strength within me. All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord, when they have heard the words of your mouth. 3

4 R R They will sing of the ways of the Lord, that great is the glory of the Lord. Though the Lord be high, he cares for the lowly; he perceives the haughty from afar. Great is the glory of the Lord! Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe; you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies; ` your right hand shall save me. The Lord will make good his purpose for me; O Lord, your love endures for ever; do not abandon the works of your hands. Great is the glory of the Lord! Second Reading 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11 I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to someone untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. Gospel Luke 5: 1-11 While Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep water and 4

5 let down your nets for a catch. Simon answered, Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets. When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signalled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man! For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people. When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed Jesus. Post-Communion Prayer Go before us, Lord, in all we do with your most gracious favour, and guide us with your continual help, that in all our works begun, continued and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name, and finally by your mercy receive everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen THE LIVING ROOMS We are beginning to think about the ways in which volunteers can share in the support to be offered in the Renew Wellbeing space at The Living Rooms. We already have the names of those who volunteered at the Forum event last October and they have recently been contacted. However, there may be others who would like the opportunity (without obligation) to find out what is involved and what training may be required. Three information sessions are planned for February in Meeting Room 1 at The Forum. They will be identical so you only have to attend one: Saturday 16th February a.m. Thursday 21st February p.m. Thursday 21st February p.m. At the meeting you will be asked to complete a questionnaire which will include your availability so have a think about the times you might be able to offer. What more should we want? So why do we find it so difficult? The Great Prayer Experiment is a monthly adventure into prayer. Each month we shall we looking at a different way to pray maybe even some ways that you haven t tried before. You are invited. Come and join us on the first Wednesday of the month 10.30am 11.30am or the first Saturday 3.30pm-4.30pm; it's the same session repeated so you can come to either and experience prayer in a different way. There is also a takeaway pack to try some at home too. If you can t make either of the sessions, take the pack and have a go yourself or with a group of friends or your family. Allow yourself to be challenged. Discover a new way to pray or revitalise your old way of praying so that our prayer becomes the heart of all we do. So, please don't hesitate; speak to Donneta or give her a call for a chat on VOLUNTEER DRIVERS for MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES for OLDER PEOPLE The Mental Health Services for Older People team at the Friarage Hospital are seeking volunteer drivers to transport patients and their families to and from appointments at the Hospital. Pray for the owner and employees as they seek to continue the business on another site. Monday 11th As our town expands, many new residents are arriving. We pray that they will soon feel at home and that they belong to this community. Tuesday 12th Pray for the ministry of other town churches and for the Ladies Together ecumenical group - asking for God s blessing on their fellowship and witness. Wednesday 13th O Lord we pray for the residents of the town s care homes asking that they will know your love and be comforted. Thursday 14th St Valentine O God, we praise you for the life of this saint and pray that his example wil inspire us in our lives. Friday 15th Thomas Bray Give thanks for the example of Thomas Bray, founder of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Pray for guidance and inspiration for Christian writers and theologians, especially thinking of Lynne and Julia who produce our publicity through the magazine and website. Saturday 16th Our churches are not just stone shelters but groups of people, so let s pray for all who toil behind the scenes looking after our fellowship.
