1 Bernadette Those glass doors! Bernie will be coming as our Curate on July 3rd. At the Maundy Thursday service in Ripon Cathedral when clergy and licensed laity confirm their vows, Bernie was prayed for by name - as were all those being ordained this summer. Please do pray for her as she ends her training and prepares to move to Harrogate and join us at St Peter's. Every Wednesday for the past 18 years Sheila Pantin has polished our entrance doors. In April she cleaned them for the last time, because of course, when we come back into St Peter's they will no longer be in use. But don't worry Sheila, there will be plenty more glass doors in need of a polish! Thank you for all your hard and faithful work all these years. MAY 2011 For more details of what s going on at St Peter s, please go to: FROM THE VICAR I came across a sermon in a book of sermons by various preachers ( Get a life, I hear you say). It was by a monk who was reflecting on the sharing of bread. We are surely those who are called to share bread quite literally with those who are hungry but also with those who are hungry for friendship and those who are in deep need of reconciliation. We are like the small boy who brought his loaves and fishes to Jesus for distribution to thousands. We are surely those too who are called to share bread in church as we do in the Eucharist in remembrance of Jesus. Do this in remembrance of me. We are like the first disciples on the night of betrayal and arrest with all the fear and uncertainty of that night before them. Of course it is precisely when we do manage to share bread, that like the first disciples on the road to Emmaus, we find in the stranger we have invited Jesus himself. As I write this we are about to embark on the momentous journey of moving out of St Peter s for seven months and joining Wesley. As we share bread with them, may the ever present Christ draw us closer together and equip us better to serve the town centre,

All the girls went on their first trip to look behind the scenes at Harrogate Theatre. They were able to access all areas, well most of them, as there was a little disappointment when we could not visit the dressing rooms as they were in use. The girls got to perform on stage and visit the 'fly floor' right at the top of the theatre. We also camped indoors and enjoyed an evening of games, songs and marshmallows around our camp fire. The girls really enjoy a varied programme of activities and mixing with girls from a range of schools across Harrogate. The unit now has 15 girls on the role and although we are currently full we do operate a waiting list. In particular if you have a pre-school girl who would like to join us in the future please contact either: Zoe Burns at zoe.burns@hotmail.co.uk or Anna Broadbent at annainharrogate@hotmail.com
3 St Peter s Fellowship News: April 2011 Jocelyn Brooks My Box of Treasures In Jocelyn s box of treasures were a Babushka doll, a book entitled They have their exits, two nylon wigs, a 1933 birthday mug, a railway lamp, a Spanish hat, a figurine of Winston Churchill, a whistle, a sunhat, a skull and various items for sound effects. Jocelyn s box of treasures turned out to be a green box containing props that linked three diverse topics: an adventurous trip to Russia with Aeroflot (with designer interior wallpaper) via Brighton! a trip to East Germany including details about the founding of Meissen porcelain and a potted history of the prison at Colditz a hilarious ghost story about Katherine Anne Griffiths of Burton Agnes. We all participated with eerie sound effects for the ghost story with Henry Pantin producing owl hoots and everyone else helping with various Gothic sound effects! We are trying to contact all those who were involved from the very beginning of the Project. We would like to organise a social event, during the day, for those who were there at the start to meet up again and also to meet those who are involved now. If you are interested can you contact me at elaine@friendsofhhp.co.uk. As ever the Project is in need of funds so if any church would like to organise a coffee morning or something similar to raise monies for the Project, we would be most grateful. There are a number of people who are able to come and speak about the work of the Project in 2011 and we have leaflets explaining the ongoing work as well. 4 A special "Thank you" to John and Patricia, our churchwardens who have worked unbelievably hard during this period of moving to Wesley. As well as all the meetings with Wesley to arrange everything in fine detail, they have masterminded all the complex logistics of getting each item in church to its proper destination. No doubt they'll be giving a huge sigh of relief now the moment has actually arrived. Oh, and congratulations to you both on your wedding anniversary at the end of last month! From the AGM Thank you to everyone who decorated the church so marvellously for Easter. Of course it was our Sunday in church until the completion of the Building Development. It was a very full day with congregations totalling over 600 people. Well done to everyone who helped bring the bare wooden cross of Good Friday to the wonderful flowering cross of Easter Day. Congratulations to those elected to the new PCC - Wendy Wright, Francis Proud, Charlotte Bonini, Neil McNabb and Heather Swarbrick. Many thanks for the work over the past three years of retiring members - Ann Pawson, Jason Knowles, Jane Crabtree, Derek Smith and Neil Newbury. ST PETER S SCHOOL FAMILY FUN DAY Saturday 11 May 11am-2pm St Peter s School This year the theme is Lifelong Learning. If you can share a skill with others or want to learn a new one come and join us. It s all free! THANK YOU May I take this opportunity to say a very appreciative thank you to those who prayed for me while my name was on the prayer list at St Peter s. I am now well enough to attend my regular 8.30am Sunday service. It will be another three months before I know the outcome (of my treatment for cancer) and I know my future is in God s hands and whatever plans he has for me, I will accept. Never underestimate the power of prayer. Yours, with renewed thanks, Bruce Wallace

And thank you each of you for the distinctive ministries you bring to us at St Peter s. Richard Morgan and Ian Wright getting ready to pour the next glass of wine at the Seder Meal. Many thanks to all those who worked so hard to make it such a successful evening. Special thanks to Chris Holland for her work behind the scenes to produce the splendid meal. It s scrap metal time again! Don t forget to look out any scrap metal for Allan Stalker again. On June 5 th he will be taking another load to the scrap yard. Last time s endeavours raised 250 for the appeal, Lets see if we can double that this time round. The Building Development Steering Group About twice a month the Steering Group meets to review progress, and try to keep on top of all the new developments. We meet up with the architects and review any changes to the design. Here we are looking at the site itself, guided by Geoff (the site project manager in the background). The lift shaft base is in, and everything is ready for the steels to come and the block work to get underway. Though overall the programme has slipped, there is still time for most of that to catch up.
