2 COLLECT Prayers and Readings Blessed Lord, who caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning: help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING - Nehemiah 8.1 4a, 5 6, 8 12 A reading from the book of Nehemiah. 1All the people gathered together into the square before the Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had given to Israel. 2 Accordingly, the priest Ezra brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding. This was on the first day of the seventh month. 3 He read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. 4 The scribe Ezra stood on a wooden platform that had been made for the purpose; 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, Amen, Amen, lifting up their hands. Then they bowed their heads and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 8 So they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. 9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said to them, Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions of them to those 2

3 for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy to our LORD; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength. 11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved. 12And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING - Colossians A reading from the letter of Paul to the Colossians. 12As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL - Matthew We say or sing Alleluia Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples: 30 The sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when 3

4 you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. POST-COMMUNION God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your true and living bread; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen. 6 CHURCH THE REVD ATALIE GAINES: Atalie s last day with us will be next Sunday, 5 November, and there is a card and collection for her at the back of the church today and in the office during the week. There will be a presentation to her after the 10.00am service next Sunday. Atalie will be installed as Vicar of Potters Bar King Charles the Martyr on Saturday 9 December at 3.00pm. There will be a coach - sign-up list to follow. ADÈLE ROWLANDS has served the people and parish of St Andrew s as an Assistant Priest for many years but with her impending move to the Brighton area, it is necessary for us to say farewell to her soon. Although she is always welcome to return and has permission from the Bishop to do so, our opportunity to say thank you to her for her ministry among us will be after the 10.00am service on Sunday 19 November. A card and collection will mark the occasion. James. ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS: A said celebration of Holy Communion of the Faithful Departed (All Souls) will be held at 8.00am on Thursday 2 November, at which the names of any departed loved ones may be read out. Please put the name of those who you would like to be remembered at this service on the list at the back of the church or contact the Church Centre Office with them. We shall be keeping All Saints Sunday on 5 November at our 8.00am and 10.00am services. COFFEE AND COMPANY: Join us for conversation and friendship over real coffee and delicious cake this Friday 3 November from 10.00am - 12noon in the Church Centre Foyer. SHOEBOX SUNDAY - 5 NOVEMBER: Please remember to bring your filled boxes for the Link to Hope appeal to church next Sunday. MOVEMENT TO MUSIC: The next session will be on Tuesday 7 November at 11.00am in the Dent Room. Do come along and join in with gentle exercise (sitting or standing). BOOK CIRCLE: The next meeting of book circle will be on Monday 11 December, 7.45pm when we will be discussing "All the light we cannot see" by Anthony Doerr. DAILY MORNING AND EVENING PRAYER: Everyone is welcome to come to these short, quiet services which are held daily. Now the clocks have gone back, the venue is the Quiet Room. They are led either by members of the clergy or members of the congregation. Morning Prayer is at 8.30am and Evening Prayer at 5.00pm. The services are normally about 25 minutes long and are a refreshing way to start or end the day. 6

WAR HORSE - Wednesday 3 October 2018: Following 8 record-breaking years in London s West End and having played in 11 countries around the world to over 7 million people, the National Theatre s acclaimed play War Horse will soon tour the UK. We have reserved 20 tickets for a matinee performance when the show comes to Milton Keynes Theatre next year. ANGEL FESTIVAL - 15/16 DECEMBER: This December we are hosting our first ever Angel Festival and we invite you to get creative and make an angel (or a heavenly host) to be part of the event.
