3 INTERCESSIONS Eternal Father, who at the Baptism of Jesus revealed him to be your Son, anointing him with the Holy Spirit: grant to us, who are born again by water and the Spirit, that we may be faithful to our calling as your adopted children. We pray for the mission and unity of the Anglican Church throughout the World, remembering today the Diocese of Kitale (Kenya). In our Diocese we pray for fresh expressions of Church, which are beginning to form across the Diocese. In our life at the Tower we pray for our Pastoral Team as they meet tomorrow. For those who knit, stitch and craft together as the Pins and Needles group, meeting on Friday this week. For all who will work together to maintain the active life of our Church Community while Charles is away on Study Leave. We pray for those who work in the Ipswich Central Retail Community. For all who enjoy the facilities in the Town Centre. For our local Councillors and Service providers. We pray for peace in the World: for those living amidst conflict and an uncertain future. For all who are experiencing extreme weather conditions as a result of climate change. We pray for our own nation as time to resolve Brexit negotiations becomes limited. That an appropriate way forward may be agreed. We pray for those we know who are sick or otherwise distressed including: Michael Bradberry, Jean Goodson, Harley Shinn, Cullum Doe and Jaydon McConnachie. We continue to pray for, Adrian Parry, Barbara Bellamy, Grace Chandler and Ian Miller. We pray for those now unable to be regularly with us in Church, including this week: Margrid Brooks and Mary Gurney. Be with them and those who care for them. We pray rest in peace and rise in glory for those who have recently died, and we pray for all who mourn. We give thanks for the lives of those whose remembrance falls at this time of year, among them Barry Hunt, Dorothy Adair and Vernon & Muriel Molloy. PRAYER FOR THE DAY (The Collect) Eternal Father, who at the baptism of Jesus revealed him to be your Son, anointing him with the Holy Spirit: grant to us, who are born again by water and the Spirit, that we may be faithful to our calling as your adopted children; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 4 BIBLE NOTES Scholars are agreed that St Luke s Gospel and Acts are both written by the same author, therefore the theology of Baptism is the same in both. There is a clear distinction between the baptism of John in water and the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, the Spirit descends upon Jesus while he is praying and the voice confirms Jesus as the Son of the Beloved. The gift of the Spirit confirms who Jesus is and prompts the next stage of his journey which is to begin his mission of healing, reconciliation and self-giving love. The events recorded in Acts have a similar interpretation. The baptism in water in the name of Jesus was not accompanied by the gift of the Spirit and so Peter and John are sent to Samaria to bring the gift of the Spirit which incorporates the new believers into the Church, the Spirit filled community. Baptism is the sacrament that incorporates people into the Christian community and in it the gift of the Spirit is given as the Baptism is made in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Canon Roger FIRST READING Acts When the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. GOSPEL Luke ,21-22 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. 4

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN IPSWICH TOWN CENTRE United Service for the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity Sunday 27 th January 5pm at Christ Church Tacket Street Please support this service as an expression of our united mission. Christ Church have a new Minister and it would be good to show our support for him in this way. There will be no evening service at SMLT. ST MARY-LE-TOWER CHRISTMAS APPEAL In aid of the Children's Society. Boxes are available at the back of church. Please take one. The due date for the return of the boxes was 25th December but we will be happy to receive your box for a little longer if you have missed that deadline. 5

Sunday services will continue as usual. Midweek Choral services will not take place until after Easter. Monday Prayers and Wednesday Communion will continue as usual. Overall, the parish will run for these 12 weeks on the same general principles as though we were in an interregnum. This is not an extended holiday for Charles! Rather it is a structured period of rest, refreshment and resourcing in preparation for the next few years of Charles ministry at the Tower. Extended leave has three main elements: a time of intentional rest and recovery, a programme of spiritual refreshment, and a specific area of study for which Charles will be supervised by Bishop Mike. The subject for Charles study is looking at how parish churches can be more intentionally encouragers and resourcers of people s spiritual pilgrimage, as they come into contact with the Church in multiple and diverse ways, meeting them where they are rather than just expecting them to join in with congregational life and groups. Please pray for the parish officials teams who will manage the parish in the Vicar s absence and for Charles too. 6

7 Arrangements for Sunday Parking at St Mary-le-Tower Church We are fortunate to have the kind and generous support of the Trustees of the Ipswich and Suffolk Club, making their car park available to our congregation on Sunday mornings. If you wish to park there, you must have a permit from the parish office and it is important to display this clearly, and you must be attending church. The car park is regularly patrolled and a penalty notice once issued cannot be cancelled. The gates open automatically at 8am and close at 2pm. This is an important facility and privilege for SMLT congregations, for which the PCC is very grateful. LIFT (Ladies in Fellowship Together) are having a Bring and Share supper on Thursday 31 January at 7pm. All welcome. Host is Sue Adair at 38 Anglesea Road. Please contact Jo Jones for further details. Jonesgriz01@gmail.com LAST SUNDAY AT THE 10.30am SERVICE two new silver candlesticks were blessed for their use in worship at St Mary-le-Tower. They have been designed particularly for use on the Nave altar but will also be used in the Lady Chapel. They have been given by Barbara Norman in memory of Iris Barrell who was indeed a light in our church for many years. Many thanks indeed. The design of the candlesticks is very much in keeping with the new Ciborium that was purchased with kind donations a few years ago. The Ciborium and Candlesticks have been made by Avon Silversmiths in Birmingham. WEEKDAY EVENING SERVICES PLEASE NOTE that the regular weekday evening choral services will not be taking place until after Easter, because of the Vicar s Study Leave. Ed Sheeran says, I appreciate the benefits which singing brings to young people both physical and emotional. Singing teaches you lots of skills and provides many opportunities which will help, enrich and sustain you throughout life. 8
