1 Weekly News 21 st February St Peter s Church, Cambridge Road, Harrogate, HG1 1RW CONFIRMATION COMING Please come along next Sunday, 28 th February, at 6:30 pm to support and pray for seven members of our Church community who are being confirmed. At the same time another is being formally received into communion with the Church of England from a different church background. What is confirmation? Well, the Church of England website states that it marks the point in the Christian journey at which we affirm for ourselves the faith into which we have been baptized and publically declare our intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming bishop. The church also asks God to give us power through the Holy Spirit to enable us to live in the way of Jesus. A confirmation service is also an excellent time for any of us to renew our Christian commitment and to ask God to equip us to serve him through the church and in the community. So join us as a participant as well as an observer. We ve been preparing from this moment since well before Christmas and I am grateful to both Sarah Harrison and Christine Jack for taking a lead in this. 2 Job Opportunity St Peter's Church is seeking to appoint a part-time assistant caretaker to help our small enthusiastic team who are responsible for groups who make use of the church on busy Saturdays. The work will involve cleaning, moving furniture, preparing meeting rooms and assisting groups who are using our facilities. The hours are 1:00-5:00 pm Saturdays, with the potential for additional weekday hours and holiday cover. The post will be conditional on a DBS check and a successful probation period. The rate of pay is 9 per hour. It will be there for anyone to use on someone in cardiac arrest at anytime it could save their life. The cost will be 1,800 and the Harrogate Lions are willing to match fund whatever we raise. 3 RIP Joan Sugden Joan Sugden, widow of previous vicar Neville Sugden, died peacefully on Saturday 13th February at the age of 90. Please pray for her family and friends. Joan s ashes are likely to be scattered or interned at Christ Churchon-the-Stray in due course and we will keep people informed of the arrangements in case those who knew Joan would appreciate more details. Canon Dr Chris Sugden, her son, who has been a prominent member of General Synod, has also promised extra material for our Archive Group, including newspaper articles relating to the quarrels of his father with the local authority. The Harrogate Advertiser Interviews Alan Garrow This is part of the interview that appeared in last week s Harrogate Advertiser and is still available in full at under the title: Harrogate s town centre church welcomes fresh new face Alan Garrow will take over the position at St Peter's Church from former minister, Canon Tony Shepherd who served the town centre church community for 27 years. Originally from London Mr Garrow, 48, will be making the move to Harrogate from Sheffield, with his wife, Emma and two young children. He said: I want to enjoy being part of this church and it is obvious that Tony has done an amazing job - it s daunting to follow someone with that kind of record, it really is, but he has created something which I really look forward to being part of. Splitting his time between his ministerial duties and being a full time researcher, Alan says he has spent his life marrying the practical and theoretical aspects of religion. But despite acquiring a PhD in Theology from Oxford University during that time, Mr Garrow is adamant that his journey to become a minister was grounded in failure. He said: When you give your life to being a vicar it has to be a no regrets commitment and I just know I couldn t have done anything else. I tried to do other things and it didn t work out at all, I left school with very few qualifications - I was genuinely unsure what to do. After studying for his BA at London Bible College, Alan was ordained at 26 before going on to do his Masters and PhD at Oxford as well as a 4 year curacy in between.

7 George Herbert ( ) George Herbert was a poet, orator and Anglican priest. He was born in 1593 in Wales, but moved to England when he was three, shortly after his father died. His family was wealthy and fond of the arts his mother was a patron and friend of the poet, John Donne. George received a good education and went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he excelled in languages and music. There he came to the notice of the King, James I, and in 1624 he became the Member of Parliament for Montgomery a life at court and in politics beckoned. However, in 1630, in his late thirties, George Herbert decided to become ordained, spending the rest of his short life as a rector of the little parish of Fugglestone St Peter with Bemerton St Andrew, near Salisbury. Here he lived with his wife, preaching and writing religious poetry until his death in He was known for his unfailing care for his parishioners, bringing the sacraments to them when they were ill, and providing food and clothing for those in need. Many of his poems have been set to music and some endure as popular hymns, including: King of Glory, King of Peace; Let All the World in Every Corner Sing; and Teach me, my God and King. He is commemorated on 27 th February throughout the Anglican Communion.
