And in Sussex we are supporting: Diocesan Family Support Work (FSW); St Cuthman's Light Centre on the Whitehawk estate, Brighton; and the Horsham Churches Together Projects. At St. Mary s 17 th Aug: Our Worshipping and Praying; 24 th Aug: Our Growing as Disciples; 31 st Aug: Our Caring as a Fellowship. In Sussex: 17 th Aug: We pray for the Support Workers working directly with families across Sussex, especially that they can feel confident and adequately resourced as the organisation goes through a period of change and financial uncertainty. 24 th Aug: We pray for Family Support Work s plans to take families on a supported holiday in East Sussex at the end of August. We pray for adequate staffing, and for enthusiastic volunteers who can help parents and children to enjoy time together and grow closer. 31 st Aug: We ask for God s blessing on the interviews taking place this week for the job of Director of Family Support Work, and pray for a successful appointment. In the wider world: 17 th Aug: We give thanks for the work Mette and Alex Bjergbæk Klausen have been doing to teach communities in rural Bo diocese about infection control and hygiene rules, to reduce the risks of transmitting Ebola virus. 24 th Aug: We pray that the local faith communities in Sierra Leone will continue to provide positive and wise leadership to people alarmed and angry about the spread of Ebola virus. We pray especially for the Bishop of Bo, the Rt Revd Emmanuel Tucker. 31 st Aug: We pray for Mette and Alex Bjergbæk Klausen as they keep various speaking engagements during their summer trip home to Denmark.

CHILDREN S SUMMER GROUP: There will be supervised activities for children aged 3-10 during the sermon and prayers. The children will be collected from the font area in the church when announced and be returned in time to take communion with you. Please let the volunteer know of any special requirements for your child on handover. We hope you will be able to stay after the 9.30 service, and join us for a cup of coffee. Please do introduce yourself to one of the clergy or a member of the welcome team, who would love the chance to get to know you better. 3 St Mary s Church Family News WEEKS 17 TH 31 ST Aug St Mary s Summer Sunday Evenings Café Church the Barn, Causeway (July 20th, August 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st) EPHESIANS - exploring themes of practical Christian living in the book of Ephesians to draw out biblical wisdom for real life in the 21st century: Real Blessing, Real Church, Real Life. Each evening will stand alone with a separate theme and will involve an informal mixture of group discussion, upfront input, some worship & prayer and lots of tea and cake! 19 th August : Mothers Union August Outing (Open to all) only a few seats left for the Mothers Union Outing to Old Alresford Place (Home of MU founder). Cost 23 to include light lunch. Please call Christine Bright on H for details. CREAM TEA organised by The Friends of St Mary s Church will take place in the Vicarage on Sunday 24 th August 2014 from 3 5 pm. Tickets 6 each are available in advance only from the Church Office. Monday 1 st Sept at 7.45pm School for Prayer All the church family are encouraged to join those in any kind of leadership at St. Mary s, in making this monthly prayer meeting a priority in our diaries. Please do come 7.45pm to 9.00pm in church. Tuesday 2 nd Sept 2pm Mothers Union Working Party in the Church Centre. SUNDAY 7 th September 9.30am: St. Mary s Birthday Party: You are all invited to celebrate our patronal festival at a special birthday party service and afterwards there will be a free party buffet with cake, jelly & ice-cream and party games! Sunday 7 th Sept 11.30am Matins will not take place Sept due to the Patronal Festival (Birthday Party) in church. FOR YOUR INFORMATION Rev Natalie Loveless Leaving Present and Card: There is a card and collection for a leaving present for Natalie (which can be given in a sealed envelope to Morag Davies or via the church office) and a card is available to sign at the back of church. Her Licensing service for her new post of Vicar of St. Leonard's and Parish Missioner will be on Monday 6th October, 7.30pm at St. Leonard's, Horsham. All are most warmly invited to be present. EMERGENCY APPEAL - Christian Aid - Gaza Crisis Appeal: Thankyou to all who have donated so far and also thankyou to the congregation for supporting the cakes and preserves sales which has enabled us to add an additional 100 donation to the emergency fund for Gaza. Please help us continue to reach those in desperate need by donating via the envelopes on the pews or available at the back of church (cash or cheques payable to PCC Horsham No.1 Account ). 4 VISITS TO HOSPITALS/DOCTORS: As part of our Caring as a Fellowship, St. Mary s has a team of volunteers who will visit people who are in-patients at our various local hospitals. The team will also take people without transport to doctor and hospital appointments. If we can help you (or someone you know), please contact the church office on H Pilgrim Course The Lord s Prayer if you are interested in attending this course in October/November please contact the church office. Dates and times to be arranged to suit as many people as possible. For more information please see Adult Confirmation Classes if anyone would like to explore the possibility of being confirmed please give your name and contact details to the church office. (The confirmation service itself is on 28 th September at 6.30pm St Michael s, Partridge Green.) Horsham Matters is soon to launch Refresh - a new and exciting Café and Christian Bookshop based in South Street in the heart of Horsham. To get this important new venture off to a flying start, we are looking for enthusiastic and energetic people from amongst the churches for volunteer roles such as retail and kitchen assistants, cooks, waiting staff. It is also proposed that the Food Bank operates from these premises too. For full details of the roles and an application form, please contact Guy Sherlock on or guysherlock@horsham-matters.org.uk or see our website HCT will be running a Night Shelter again this winter and St Mary's Church has agreed to provide The Barn as the venue on Sunday evenings. The shelter will run for 17 weeks from 17 November to 15 March All participating churches have been asked to finalise their list of volunteers asap. Training for all volunteers will take place in October. If you are interested in being a volunteer or want to find out more please speak to Denise Herrington ( ) or Manny Holden ( ). Volunteer forms are available from the Church Office. Coming soon at St Mary s Rev Jo Elvidge: Jo s licensing date is Thursday 11 th September pm at St John s Hythe all welcome. (Please organise lifts amongst yourselves but the church office will try to help you if you need a lift or want to offer a lift to others.) Ride and Stride 13 September: Volunteers are still needed to man the church on the day please see the rota sheet at the back of church. If you can assist for an hour on the day, please add your name and contact details in your preferred time slot. Cycling from Land s End to John O Groats to support the Alzheimer s Society The reason Simon Briggs won t be participating in this year s Ride and Stride event is because on 13 September, he ll be most of the way to John O Groats on a 969mile cycle challenge to raise funds for Alzheimer s. He d love you to sponsor him, and you can do so most easily via his JustGiving page at Sunday 14 th Sept 9.30am - Mothers Union - Wheels Appeal Cake Sale will take place after the 9.30am service. Eton College Trip 30th Sept: If you are going on this trip your tickets are now available to collect from the church office. The cost is 18 per person. This includes the cost of the coach, donation to the College Chapel fund, gift and tips. Cash or cheque made payable to The Friends of St Mary s Church, Horsham. 5 Saturday 8 th November at 7.30pm Local Heroes: Remembering the Unforgettable an evening of music and poetry of the time, featuring students from the Performing Arts Dept at Collyers, Berkshire Brass and St Mary s Church Choir. Money will be split between Help for Heroes and Friends of St Mary s for the upkeep of the Historic Church Building. Tickets will be on sale shortly from St Mary s Church Office.
