But strangely, although people talk about the true meaning of Christmas, they rarely say what they think it actually is people assume that we all know what we mean and that we all mean the same thing. Sure enough, we are agreed that it is not to do with the glitz and conspicuous consumption that accompanies this time of year fun though that can sometimes be - but people have a whole range of different things in mind when they talk about Christmas s true meaning. For some it is to do with world peace; for others it is to do with family and friends; for others it is to do with the wonder and excitement that children feel as the big day approaches. All of which is good, but there is something more. For some it is to do with the birth of a baby in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, with a long journey and no room at the inn, and mangers and angels and shepherds and wise men and a star and that gets us closer: those are, indeed, the events that we recall and celebrate at Christmas. But for the true meaning of Christmas we have to scratch below the surface of those events to see the significance of what is going on. To see the true meaning of Christmas we need to remember that it didn t stop in the stable at Bethlehem but that that extraordinary baby grew up to be the most extraordinary man. 3

To remember that in Jesus, God himself came into the world to be with us, to share our life and, through his death and resurrection, to open for us the way back to God. Or as Saint John reflected half a lifetime later: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. So, I hope you enjoy the season; but more than that, I pray that you may know God s love and grasp hold of his offer of eternal life. Uniformed Groups normally meet during term-time: Wednesday - 6pm Beavers pm Cubs pm Scouts Thursday Friday pm Rainbows & Brownies - 7pm Guides DAISY CHAIN Play session for children 0-3 years and their parents or carers. Held during term time only. Happy Christmas! Peter Tuesday sessions - due to increased numbers of families attending, sadly, Daisy Chain is unable to enrol new members just now; however, names can be entered on the waiting list. Christmas Cards As we are very aware, this continues to be an extremely difficult time for Christians living in the Middle East. Morven and I will be again be sending just one Christmas card to all our friends at church and will instead make a donation to the work of Embrace the Middle East, (formerly the Biblelands charity). As last year, there will be space set aside on one of the notice boards in the foyer to pin your own card. The Friday morning Time Out session is continuing: 9.15am - 11am A chance for parents and carers to relax whilst the children play together. 50p per session. There will be one Christmas party for all current members on the morning of Tuesday 13th December. Please contact Iris Roe ( ) for more information. Peter 4 13

Sunday Club Sunday Club meets at 1 0am in the church hall on the 1st Sunday each month. Sunday Club welcomes children and young people aged 2 1/2 years and upwards with parents staying with the younger ones if they wish. Mini Sunday Club is a shorter session often held on the 3rd Sunday each month. See back page for dates of all Sunday Club and Mini Sunday Club sessions. Barbara Clayton Ladies Group Our meeting on 13th December will be a Musical Evening when we will be joined by our friends Kevin and Brian and Hand Bell Ringers and choir from the U3A. This will be followed a raffle and light refreshments. We do not meet in January and February but have a speaker at our March meeting. New members are always welcome to join us. Pam Bailey - Events Coordinator Coffee Morning 10.15am am Held on a Tuesday in the small hall. This is a time to relax and chat with a drink and home made cake - 1 only! Please come and bring a friend. At this time of giving Christmas is sometimes called a time of giving. For most people that phrase will conjure up ideas of present-filled stockings and boxes around the Christmas tree. On the other hand, the hymn At this Time of Giving (Graham Kendrick) that we sing at this time of year is not about the gifts that we give one another but rather about the infinitely greater gifts that God gives us through his son, Jesus. But whatever comes to mind at the phrase at this time of giving, our thoughts are probably not directed towards giving to the church. But this rather more ordinary and regular part of our Christian walk is important too; it is important as a thankful response to all that God has given us and as a means of furthering God s work in the world. When did you last give thought to your giving? As we prepare to reflect on God sending his son into the world it might be a good time to look afresh at this aspect of our discipleship. I have put together some thoughts on giving that I have left in the foyer; I hope you will take one away and read it. I then invite you to consider prayerfully (and cheerfully) how much you give to support the work and worship of our church. Wishing you Grace and Peace, Peter 12 5

Confirmation Service CHURCH FAMILY NEWS On 9th November Abigail Medway and Faith Wood were joined by family and friends at St John s Church, Smalley for their joyful confirmation service presided over by the new Bishop of Repton, the Venerable Jan McFarlane. A lovely cake continued the celebration in church on the following Sunday! Baptism In October we welcomed Charlie Millward-Spence with his parents Kayleigh and Thomas and family and friends for Charlie s baptism. Christmas Food Hampers We will be packing the hampers on Friday 16th December. If you plan to come and help please arrive promptly at 10 am - a big help. Thanks to people who have prepared Christmas gifts for the families - please bring these by this date. Thanks, too, to everyone who has supported this project over the past year - the most recent event (the delicious Afternoon Tea in November served by Iris and team) raised over all contributing to help share the love of Jesus at Christmas. Sue and Barbara Mavis Towlson We were saddened to hear about the sad loss of our friend and sister-in-christ Mavis Towlson. Mavis was a life long member of this church and was well known as a dancer and dance teacher. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. Decorating Church for Christmas Saturday 17th December at 10am Everyone is welcome - please bring sharp secateurs or scissors and have a go! If bringing festive greenery, please remember to soak it overnight in a bucket of water to help our display survive the heating in church over Christmas. We also remember baby Teddy Sneddon who had just started to attend our Daisy Chain toddler group. Please remember the family in your prayers. 6 Carol Service Sunday 18th December at 6.30pm Traditional service with carols and readings. 11

Christingle Service Sunday 11th December at 10am The Rainbows and Brownies will lead our Christingle service and everyone will be able to make a Christingle to take home. Christingle means 'Christ's Light' and it is a symbol of the Christian faith. The orange represents the world. The red ribbon (or tape) symbolises the love and blood of Christ. The sweets and dried fruit represent all of God s creations. The lit candle represents Jesus s light in the world, bringing hope to people living in darkness. Don t forget to bring your collecting candle which will be received during the service for the work of the Children's Society. The Children s Society aims to fight child poverty and neglect and help all children have a better chance in life. Let s see if we can break last year s record of 320! Internal Christmas Post The post box for internal Christ Church Christmas cards will be in the foyer at church. You can use it both to post cards for your friends at Christ Church and to leave your donation for the work of The Children's Society. Not once upon a single time, not once within a single place, But now for every time and place the truth of Christ is born and lives And Christmas fills the earth. Thanks be to God! The Manna House Christian Community Café, Kirk Hallam VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Are you community minded? D Hilton Do you have a heart for needy and vulnerable people? Could you spare a few hours each week? The Manna House would love to hear from you! The ability to drive would be a big advantage, but not essential. If you are interested please contact Laura Wilkinson, Manna House Manager, on Mob:

Parochial Church Council (PCC) PCC did not meet in October. Key points from November meeting next month. Date of next meeting: Christmas Fayre January 17th at 7.30pm Saturday 3rd December at 2pm David Martin Admission 25p Church Hall Help Come along and enjoy I am pleased to report that our church hall is becoming increasingly well used not only for regular groups but also for occasional users. Raffle Tombola Cards Books Bottle Stall Gifts, Toys, Crafts Jewellery Christmas Crafts Tuck Shop Refreshments As they do not hold keys, occasional users pose an additional burden in terms of opening up and closing, and Joan Bacon has been managing this with ad hoc help from others. The work of opening and closing is not usually too onerous but it ties you down to being at the hall at specific times. See Santa for free! Included in admission price We have now reached the point where it is not fair to ask a single individual to manage this and, if we are to continue to hire out the church hall to irregular users, we need to establish some sort of rota system to share opening and closing possibly a monthly rota. If you think that you might be able to help with this, please see Joan or Peter. Thanks to Joan for continuing to manage hall bookings in addition to the practicalities on the day. Help with Christmas Fayre Help would be much appreciated with: setting up tables at 9.00am on the day serving on stalls or in the kitchen Peter 8 9
