2 Prayers and Readings COLLECT Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING - Leviticus A reading from the book of Leviticus. 13 In this year of jubilee you shall return, every one of you, to your property. 14 When you make a sale to your neighbour or buy from your neighbour, you shall not cheat one another. 15 When you buy from your neighbour, you shall pay only for the number of years since the jubilee; the seller shall charge you only for the remaining crop years. 16 If the years are more, you shall increase the price, and if the years are fewer, you shall diminish the price; for it is a certain number of harvests that are being sold to you. 17 You shall not cheat one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God. 18 You shall observe my statutes and faithfully keep my ordinances, so that you may live on the land securely. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING - 1 Corinthians A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is 2

3 the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL - Matthew Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 13You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness 3

4 be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. 14 You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. This is the Gospel of the Lord. 6 LENT 2018 THE LENT COURSE continues at St Andrew s on Monday evenings (7.30pm pm) and at St Peter s on Thursday afternoons (2.00pm pm). It builds on the Leading your Church into Growth course. Join us even if you have missed previous weeks. UNITED LENT SERVICES AT BUNYAN MEETING: Theme: Christ Through Culture. These weekly services in Lent are celebrating the diversity of Christian culture in Bedford. Wednesdays until 21 March, 1.10pm-2.00pm. Lunches are available in the Church Hall before the service and light refreshments in the Foyer Coffee Shop. All are welcome. LENT LUNCHES: Thursdays 8, 15 and 22 March; 12noon-1.30pm. A simple lunch of soup, bread and cheese will be served in the Holt Room, for which a minimum donation of 3.00 is requested. Profits from this year s lunches will be donated to Butterfly House (Bedford Refuge). Please do come along - this is a chance to meet and chat with other members of the congregation and the community. LENT CHALLENGE ARE YOU UP FOR IT?: Once again, over Lent, we are collecting either goods or money for Bedford Food Bank and the Prebend Day Centre and we challenge you to put something aside each day and bring it to the Church on Easter Sunday. Please see the March edition of The Fisherman for details of what each organisation currently requires. Youth and Children s Worker St Andrew s, Kimbolton Road, Bedford. Full-time - salary from 20,000 per annum. St Andrew s wishes to appoint a Youth and Children s Worker to oversee and develop the teaching and inspiration of the younger members of our congregation. The successful applicant will build on the existing children s work and develop our ministry to young families and local schools. 7 CHURCH FAIRTRADE have a display of goods in the Main Hall after the 10.00am service today as part of Fairtrade Fortnight. Do come along to browse and buy and support Fairtrade producers and suppliers. FISHERMAN MAGAZINE: The March Fisherman is ready - please remember to collect your copy of from the back of church. Single copies are available at 80p each, if you do not have a subscription. STEWARDSHIP: There are letters for members of the Stewardship scheme at the back of church - please remember to collect yours. MOTHERING SUNDAY FLOWERS: On Saturday 10 March, 9.30am, we shall be bunching flowers in the Foyer for distribution at the services on Mothering Sunday, 11 March. Help with this would be much appreciated, as would offers of flowers or greenery. Please speak to Jenny Coggins. ADOPT A ROAD : For Easter, Christmas and occasionally at other times of the year, we aim to deliver a card to all homes in the parish. Many of you will have helped by collecting a bundle from church to deliver, but there are always some that go undelivered. So this Easter we would like to try a different approach to reduce waste. At the back of the church you will find a list of roads and residential blocks in the parish. Please sign up if you would be willing to adopt a particular road or roads and you will be given a pack of cards to deliver in the week beginning 18 March. Of course the ideal would be for all roads to find a willing adopter - another Lent challenge? SIDESPERSONS ROTA FOR HOLY WEEK: Please sign up on the list at the back of the church if you are able to assist at any of the Holy Week services. RECYCLED EASTER CARDS now on sale at 20p in the Holt Room after the 10.30am service every Wednesday am PARISH EUCHARIST - NEW MUSICAL SETTING: Copies of the current music used for the sung parts of the service can be found with the hymn books in the back of the pews. RINGING FOR PEACE - ARMISTICE 100: On 11 November this year church bells will ring out and Big Ben will strike to mark the centenary of Armistice Day. If you would like to join the St Andrew s bellringers to be part of history, as bellringers mark the end of the First World War, now is the time to start learning to ring.
