1 Services and Notices Sunday 28 th December 2014 First Sunday of Christmas A very warm welcome to all our visitors today. Please feel free to introduce yourself to one of the clergy after the service. Please let us know if you are new and would like to join our regular congregations or would like to know more about how we can support you in your faith. Canon Elizabeth is presiding at Burton Leonard this morning Please, take this Pew Slip away with you so that you can refer to the notices contained in it. Please, also use it to prompt prayers for this Cathedral and all that we seek to do in God s service. Large print versions of the Order of Service and this notice sheet are available. Please ask a member of Select Vestry or a Verger if you would like one. An induction loop system is also in operation for hearing aid users. Dean: The Very Revd John Dobson Cathedral Office: In Residence: The Dean (Dec) Website: Canon Elizabeth Sewell (Jan)

2 A Note from the Dean Welcome to the Cathedral. A special welcome if you are joining us for the first time. Please, complete a Welcome Card if you would like to give us your contact details. The Fourth Day of Christmas We are still very much in the season of Christmas; yes, possibly exchanging calling birds, but a s c ti ui g t ce ebrate G d s gift to us all of the saviour of the world. This is the one, born as a poor, vulnerable child, who would show the world most perfectly what God is like, and the way back to unity with God. Like the shepherds eavi g the stab e, ay we retur fr ur services t day g rifyi g a d praisi g God for all we have heard and seen. May we also be prepared to tell others of the good news and encourage them to come and see with us. A Flower Festival Christmas Carols A wonderful spectacle that we might want to encourage people to come and see is the collection of flower arrangements that are gracing the Cathedral at the moment. Many thanks to the flower arrangers. When I met with them to discuss the theme of Christ as Car s, they did t reveal that we would be blessed with a veritable flower festival! Do take time to look and appreciate the arrangements. Many thanks May I thank everyone who was involved in making possible our wonderful worship over the last few days: all involved in planning, preparing, leading and tidying up afterwards. Included in this, of course, are the Director of Music, Assistant Director of Music, Choir, and Bellringers. Our worship does a good deal to make us feel a whole lot better and more blessed tha w u d be the case if we did t participate i such services. Let us pray that it a s makes God feel better! In Christ he showed that he is a God of limitless self-giving love. Surely, he must value the times when love is shown back in return. Watchnight Service I have been promised another memorable Ripon event in the form of the Watchnight service and procession New Year s Eve. This begins with a short Cathedral service at 11.15am, before the candlelit procession to the Market Place and a blessing by our diocesan bishop, the Right Reverend Nick Baines, the Bishop of Leeds. Please, do join us. Travel safely d Happy New Year If you are not with us in Ripon over the New Year, we pray that you will travel safely. The canons and I wish you a very happy New Year. With my very best wishes Dean John

3 Today s Services 8.00 am Holy Eucharist (1662 Book of Common Prayer) President & Preacher: Canon Elizabeth Sewell 9.30 am Mattins Psalm 105 [1-15] 10.30am Sung Eucharist with Precentor and Congregation President & Preacher: Canon Paul Greenwell Hymns: 39, , 42 Responsorial Psalm NEH 535 Collect Almighty God, who wonderfully created us in your own image and yet more wonderfully restored us through your Son Jesus Christ: grant that, as he came to share in our humanity, so we may share the life of his divinity; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. First Reading A reading from book of the prophet Isaiah I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. F r Zi s sake I wi t keep si e t, and for Jerusa e s sake I wi t rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. [ ] Responsorial Psalm NEH 535 All the ends of the earth have seen: The salvation of our God Sing to the Lord a new song, For he has done marvelous things:

4 With his own right hand and with his holy arm, He had brought deliverance. R The Lord has made known his righteous love, In the sight of all mankind, And his faithfulness and truth Toward the house of Israel R All the ends of the earth have seen, The salvation of our God: Let all the world be glad in him, Sing, rejoice and give him thanks. R Let music sound up on the harp, Let psalms be offered to his praise: With trumpets and with songs of joy Shout the praise of God our King. R Second Reading A reading from book of Galatians When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son i t ur hearts, cryi g, Abba! Father! S y u are ger a s ave but a chi d, a d if a child then also an heir, through God. [4. 4-7] Gospel Reading Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke All Glory to you O Lord When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one a ther, Let us g ow to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the L rd has ade k w t us. S they we t with haste a d f u d Mary a d J seph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. [ ]
