A Synopsis of our faith from the PCUSA Book of Confessions: The Brief Statement of Faith In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, Fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good

and makes everyone equally in God's image male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God's commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God's condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still. We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture,

to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. We, Presbyterians, are people of three books: The Bible (our authority in faith and life.) The Book of Confessions and The Book of Order, which comprise the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The Book of Order lists ten doctrines (beliefs) which we Presbyterians take to be essential to our faith: Two are shared with the one catholic, apostolic Church: 1. The mystery of the Trinity. 2. The Incarnation of the Word of God in Jesus Christ. (John 1:1-14) Two are identified with our affirmation of the Protestant Reformation: 3. Justification by grace through faith. (Romans 5:1; Ephesians 2:8-9) 4. The Scriptures as the final authority for salvation and faithful living. (II Timothy 3:16) Sola gratia -- grace alone Sola fide -- faith alone Sola scriptura -- Scripture alone Six express the faith of the Reformed tradition: 5. The Sovereignty of God. (Psalm 103:19)

6. God's choosing (Election) of people for service and for salvation. (Ephesians 2:10) 7. The Covenant life of the Church, ordering itself according to the Word of God. 8. A faithful Stewardship of God's creation. 9. The sin of Idolatry, our tendency to make created things ultimate, rather than worshipping only the Creator. 10. The necessity of Obedience to the Word of God. "Thus the creeds and confessions of this Church reflect a particular stance within the history of God's people. They are the result of prayer, thought, and experience within a living tradition. They serve to strengthen personal commitment and the life and witness of the community of believers." The Book of Order, Chapter II (G ) On November 27, 2001, the Session of San Clemente Presbyterian Church announced our commitment to the Confessing Church Movement that included this excerpt : 1. That Jesus Christ alone is Lord of all and the way of salvation. Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6) There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) There is neither life nor salvation without Christ Jesus. (Scots Confession XVI) Jesus Christ is the only Savior of the world and the true awaited Messiah. For we teach and believe that this Jesus Christ our Lord is the unique and eternal Savior of the human race, and thus the whole world, in whom by faith are saved all who before the law, under the law, and under the Gospel were saved, and however many will be saved at the end of the world. (Second Helvetic Confession XI) 2. That holy Scripture is the triune God s revealed Word, the Church s only infallible rule of faith and life. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. (2 Tim 3:16-17)

We believe and confess the canonical Scriptures of the holy prophets and apostles of both Testaments to be the true Word of God, and to have sufficient authority of themselves, not of men Scripture teaches fully all godliness Scripture is the word of God. (Second Helvetic Confession, I) The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed and obeyed, dependeth not upon the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God (who is truth itself), the author thereof; and therefore it is to be received, because it is the Word of God The whole counsel of God, concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man s salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit, or traditions of men. (Westminster Confession, I) 3. That God s people are called to holiness in all aspects of life. Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; for it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:14-16) (We are admonished to) be of one mind with all the brethren, live a holy life, and not pollute ourselves with wickedness and strange religions; but, persevering in the true faith to the end of our life, strive to excel in holiness of life. (Second Helvetic Confession, XXI) They who are effectually called and regenerated, having a new heart and a new spirit created in them, are further sanctified, really and personally, through the virtue of Christ s death and resurrection, by his Word and Spirit dwelling in them; the dominion of the whole body of sin is destroyed, and the several lusts thereof are more and more weakened and mortified, and they more and more quickened and strengthened, in all saving graces, to the practice of true holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. (Westminster Confession, 6.075) Insofar as Christ s will for the Church is set forth in Scripture, it is to be obeyed. (BOO G c) We further acknowledge that the current crisis of accommodation and confusion in sexual ethics, Christian marriage and the appropriate conduct of church leaders has caused further division and uncertainty as to what the church believes and teaches. So, we reaffirm today:

Christian marriage is an institution ordained of God, blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ, established and sanctified for the happiness and welfare of mankind, into which spiritual and physical union one man and one woman enter, cherishing a mutual esteem and love, bearing with each other s infirmities and weaknesses, comforting each other in trouble, providing in honesty and industry for each other and for their household, praying for each other, and living together the length of their days as heirs of the grace of life. (Westminster Confession of Faith 6.131) It is the divine intention that persons entering the marriage covenant become inseparably united, thus allowing for no dissolution save that caused by the death of either husband or wife. However, the weaknesses of one or both partners may lead to gross and persistent denial of the marriage vows so that marriage dies at the heart and the union becomes intolerable; yet only in cases of extreme, unrepented-of, and irremediable unfaithfulness physical or spiritual should separation or divorce be considered. Such separation or divorce is accepted as permissible only because of the failure of one or both of the partners, and does not lessen in any way the divine intention for indissoluble union The remarriage of divorced persons may be sanctioned by the church, in keeping with the redemptive gospel of Christ, when sufficient penitence for sin and failure is evident, and a firm purpose of and endeavor after Christian marriage is manifested. (Westminster Confession of Faith 6.138) The relationship between man and woman exemplifies in a basic way God s ordering of the interpersonal life for which he created mankind. Anarchy in sexual relationships is a symptom of man s alienation from God, his neighbor, and himself. (The Confession of 1967, 9.47)
