Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 9, 2015 Masses Saturday Vigil: 5:00 PM Sunday: 8:00 & 10:00 AM Weekdays: See schedule in bulletin Sacraments Baptisms are celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month after the 10:00 AM Mass. Pre-Baptismal classes are required. Contact the Parish Office for arrangements. Reconciliation: Saturdays 12:30-1:00 PM and after the 5:00 PM Mass. Marriage: Contact Parish Office at least 6 months in advance of proposed date. Visitation of the Sick or Shut-Ins: Inform the Parish Office when anyone is ill at home or in the hospital. Upon request, Holy Communion can be brought to the home by the priest and/or a Eucharistic Minister. Bulletin Deadline: All bulletin announcements must be received by Monday noon in written form. Preparation for Entering the Church (RCIA): We welcome those who are interested in becoming Catholics. To enter a program of formation and prayer, contact the Parish Office. Parish Membership: New parishioners are always welcome! Call the Parish Office for a census form. Prayer Meeting: Every Wednesday from 7:00-9:00 PM. See bulletin for monthly Mass time. Missionary Cooperative Appeal Next Weekend, August 15 & 16, Sister Delia Marie of the Congregation of the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, will speak at all Masses. The IHM Sisters have worked in the Diocese for over one hundred years. As part of the Mission Cooperative Appeal, Sister Delia will be speaking about their mission in Peru. Please be as generous as possible for all these needy people. Thank you for your continued generosity. THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday s Gospel: Bread is the beginning of everything. Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. Let me explain. I am off doing a Corporal Work of Mercy to bury the dead. Back on July 27th, I received notice about the death of a good friend, Ronald H. Udouj of Fort Smith, AR. You ve seen that name previously. Ronnie was on our prayer list. His funeral was to take place on August 8th. I have gone to be with his wife, Jane, and their daughter Jane-Ellen Kutchka (wife of my good friend Jay), and sons Eric and Paul. I ask you all to do a Spiritual Work of Mercy to pray for the living and the dead. Please keep Ronnie and his family in your prayers and for a safe trip for me! I hope you don t mind musings about my friend Ronnie. There have been many trips to Fort Smith and other places. So many memories. One of my favorite stories is a summer trip to Red River. Ronnie was an avid sportsmen. He so wanted to take me fishing. He even guaranteed a perfect spot. So off we went. It was a beautiful spot along the Red River. Mountains all around; a clear babbling brook it was NOT a river by PA standards! And there it was, just below a gentle rapid, a hole filled with trout. Prior to that trip, I had never caught a fish. Ronnie assured me my luck would change that day. I had my doubts about ever catching a fish. So I bated my hook and cast into the hole. Nothing! I tried a couple of times. Nothing. Ronnie came along and said, No, Father Jim, you need to cast a bit up river and let it ride the current and fall into the hole, You are guaranteed a fish. Guess what happened? Nothing. I tried a couple more times. Still nothing. I kid you not, Ronnie took the same rod and bait, put it into that hole and the trout couldn t get enough of it! I said to him, Ronnie, it seems I am called to be a fisher of men, not of fish! It was a few days later when I caught my first fish. Ronnie was so proud of me! And by the way, I will tell you it was delicious! Rest in peace my friend. See you all when I get back to Pittsburgh late Monday. Fr. Jim Gretz

Mass on Saturday at 8:00 AM. As we continue to hear the Bread of Life Discourse from John's BOX Gospel, it is a good time to consider for a moment our relationship to the Eucharistic Prayer that is at the heart of every Mass. Many people mistakenly view the Eucharistic Prayer as the prayer of the priest alone, the assembled faithful merely bystanders. While it is the priest who, by virtue of ordination, proclaims the majority of the Eucharistic Prayer aloud, he does so on our behalf. It is important for us to listen attentively to the words of the prayer and silently join our hearts and minds with the priest as he prays. Equally important is our strong and sincere responses to the priest's part of the prayer in the Introductory Dialogue (The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. etc...), Sanctus (Holy, holy, holy), Memorial Acclamation, and Great Amen. While it is the priest's responsibility to pray the majority of the Eucharistic Prayer aloud, the prayer belongs to ALL of us, and we all have an important part in it! Father Lutz will be our celebrant. Since, 1986, All Saints Prayer Group has been praying for the needs of the parish community and always welcomes new faces. Please join us at Mass with your prayer needs and plan on coming back each Wednesday evening for prayer group meetings, which will be held in the Activities Building through the month of August and then will go back into the main Church. Complaining is a dead-end and constant complaining is nagging. We might feel better but others feel bitter. Silence or grumbling will not resolve the problem. Address differences honestly and respectfully. Don t make them personal attacks.
