1 ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH Join us for Worship! 8:00 and 11:10 a.m. Traditional Services 9:15 a.m. Sunday School 10:25 a.m. Contemporary Service Inside this issue: Sunday School 2 Birthdays & Anniversaries 3 Luther Quiz 4 All Saints Sunday It s Time to Clean! ABC Learning Center Volume 27 Issue 10 October 2016 On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of Wittenburg Church in Germany. The Protestant Reformation was born and the Christian Church has never been the same since. Three simple phrases sum up the main ideas at work in reformation theology: -- ONLY BY SCRIPTURE means that only God's Word is our sure guide for faith and life, not any human teachings or traditions. -- ONLY BY GRACE means that only through God's undeserved love are we made righteous (perfectly holy and faithful), not through any human achievement. -- ONLY BY FAITH means that only trust in God's promises, not our efforts, receives God's justification (his declaration that we are sin free in Christ). We celebrate the Reformation to acknowledge God's reforming work among His people - past and present. We may take this opportunity to look back to the ferment and change which the Gospel caused in the medieval Church. We may champion the need for reform in our society, as did the early reformers. But the Gospel is still God's power to reform His church today. Like those who have gone before us in the faith, the church of today is called to reform itself and to celebrate our Lord's grace to us in the Gospel. In a sentence, the insight that freed and inspired the early reformers was simply this: What makes us righteous is not our own virtue, but the righteousness of God, given freely as a gift of His love because of the redeeming work of Christ our Lord. God continues to be at work. Wherever there are people who faithfully seek out God s guidance and purpose in their lives, there is God reforming the human heart from its old sinful nature to a holy one. We are God s reformed people. We are holy in His sight. We are set apart to do His work; to serve our God in all that we do. We are a reformed people because of our baptism. God sees us not as we are but as we were meant to be. In God s eyes, we are a new creation. These are the things we celebrate on Reformation Sunday. It is a day of rejoicing as we thank God for His work in the past and His work among us still. Trunk or Treat 7 See you in church, Pastor Beck
2 What do you know about Islam? What s coming up in Adult Sunday School? We will begin a study on the Islam religion beginning Sunday, October 16, 2016 in the library from 9:30 10:15 am. Did you know that Islam is the second largest religion in the world with 1.2 billion adherents? We will explore Muslim beliefs, practices, and their history. We will try to answer questions, including What do Muslims believe? Who was Muhammad? How do Muslims view Judaism and Christianity and other faiths? What is jihad? Does the Quran condone terrorism? Is Islam compatible with modernization, capitalism and democracy? and Are women second-class citizens in Islam? If you are interested in this class, please sign up on the sheets posted in the church foyer or the Advent Life Center foyer. I am looking forward to seeing you in class. Pastor Beck Advent College Students HELP! If your son or daughter is attending college, please do not assume that we have their current address. We really want to keep in touch with our college students. Everyone with a college student (new and returning students) please call the church office soon to let us know their current mailing address, and cell phone number. Help us to avoid overlooking any of these special people. Thanks! Dear Dad... Dear Dad: Gue$$ what I need mo$t of all? That $ right, plea$e $end $ome along $oon. Yet you still have obligations at home and possibly at the workplace. How can you make this work? I was in this situation as the patient recently. My husband needed to take care of business and get a good night's sleep. So we brought in our CareTemps Care Providers to be his eyes and ears and advocate for good care. This gave peace of mind to both of us. If this situation sounds familiar, call on CareTemps to be your eyes and ears so you can rest and refresh. Dear Jeff, Now that was quite a tricky Note you Sent. I ve seen Nothing like it since I went to college. None of us would have been clever enough to have thought of using a $ instead of an s send another NOte soon. NOw I must close. Love, Dad. Since last All Saints Sunday. those members of Advent who have entered eternal life are: Georgie Brandt, Gary Roesler, Harold Mooney, Roger Toler, Doris Blevins, Daniel Albers and Lola Grenwelge. 6 Game Night - Friday, October 14, 2016 Game Night is Friday night, October 14th at 6:00 p.m. Please bring a guest and a snack to share. For more information, please call Your Game Night Committee: Angie & Jimmy Cassens, Sally & Mike Knerr, and Lavina & Travis Oevermann ABC Learning Center News On August 25th, Advent s Beloved Children Learning Center (ABC -LC) celebrated our 2 year anniversary! Our first day of school was August 22nd and we opened our doors with a total of 46 students enrolled. It s such an amazing reflection when I look back at where we were 2 years ago, even where we were last year. We currently have 13 amazing ladies on staff at the school that are genuinely passionate about working with children and that is a blessing within itself. As the church s picnic and school gala are quickly approaching we are currently working on projects and crafts to make it as memorable as we possibly can for everyone. If you are interested in donating an item to our silent auction please contact the school ( ) or church office ( ) at your earliest convenience. Please be mindful that all proceeds raised will be donated to the Learning Center to help purchase needed items around the school, one being a new washer and dryer Please remember that volunteers are always welcome to come and read a book to the toddlers/ preschoolers or rock an infant to sleep. A simple background check will have to be ran before you are allowed to be in the classroom for an extended period of time with the children. If you are interested, please contact me at the school. As always, thank you so much for supporting ABC Learning Center, a ministry outreach of Advent Lutheran Church, a community of hope making Christ known! Tarita Smith, Director ABC Learning Center Reformation Sunday Reformation Sunday will be October 26 and it should serve as an impetus for us to remember the great reformer, Martin Luther. This quotation from Luther reminds us of a principal focus of his life: "We should learn well how to please Christ. We do please him by dedicating our entire life with all possible diligence solely to the service of our neighbor. 'Down, down,' says Christ 'you will find me in the poor, you are rising too high if you do not look for me down there.'" 6
7 Thanks to......the Advent Congregation for its generous support of Advent s Brotherhood and the Chicken-to-Go. Your generosity helps to support Brotherhood s many love projects....our Advent family for the memorial gifts, cards, and phone calls for my sweet mother Betty Hassinger. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this sad time, we miss her terribly but know that she is at peace with my dad. God bless our Advent family. - Larry & Sally Dresch What is Trunk or Treat you ask? Trunk-or-treating is a version of trick-or-treating, but instead of children going door to door to collect candy, they go from trunk to trunk. Trunk-ortreating typically takes place in church or school parking lots. Advent Front Parking Lot Sunday, October 30th The best part of this fun tradition? Decorating your car's trunk to match a specific theme you 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. choose. Some people keep it simple, and others go all out. The "trick" to it seems to be finding something you're passionate about--or have a lot of stuff for--and displaying it in your trunk as creatively as possible. If you've got Christmas lights, sports gear, cardboard, or fake cobwebs, you can have a creepy or cool trunk in a flash. Or you can just come bring your lawn chairs and candy to pass out at the back of your car. We will have a bouncy house for the kids and who knows what else. Please contact Connie Bathe or conniebathe@sbcglobal.net to let her know that you will be participating or with any questions. Advent s Annual Church Picnic! Celebrate Texas in October! Make plans to attend our annual church picnic on Sunday, October 9th. Barbecue with all the fixin s will be served immediately following the 10:30 church service. We will have activities for children, cake Bingo and a silent auction benefiting the ABC center. For questions, auction item donations or to volunteer your services, please contact the church office or Marcy Leonhardt at
