1 First United Methodist Church P.O. Box 1343 Canadian, TX (806) First United Methodist Church, Canadian, Texas November 2017 Our Mission: The Making of Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World The Pastor s Pen Larry Bass - Pastor Cory Campbell - Youth Pastor Julene Castillo- Secretary Brent Layman - Finance 520 Main Street/P.O. Box 1343 Canadian, TX (806) fumc@yft.net Website: fumc-canadian.org Return Service Requested Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. John 12:25 Here comes Thanksgiving! I really enjoy Thanksgiving. I enjoy the fellowship with my family, the desserts, the food, the laughter, the desserts, the turkey and the desserts! But I am thankful for something else, far more important than food, and yes more important than desserts. I am thankful for God. I know that sounds stereotypically preacher, but I am. I have salvation through Jesus Christ and his amazing work on the cross. I have a relationship with God through the Holy Spirit that lives in me. I am a child to my Father in Heaven, who loved me so much that He offered the life of His Son to redeem me. I am thankful that I will one day leave this earth and join my God in Heaven. I spoke with an elderly couple recently that I had not seen in a while. I asked how they were doing, and she replied, Getting older, thank God! I love that response. Every day I get older, I get closer to Heaven. Every day I am on this planet puts me one day closer to forever with Jesus. Every moment I have with the Holy Spirit is one step deeper in my relationship with my God. For me, Getting older, thank God! points directly to a longing to be closer to God. It means I have a deep thankfulness for every problem I encounter, because it reminds me that I am no longer meant for this world. As a believer in Jesus Christ, I am marked as citizen of the Kingdom of God. In John 12:25, Jesus said, Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. I have learned that life on this earth is temporary and that the struggles we face here are momentary. I look forward to a day when I get to leave here and finally see my Jesus face to face. In the meantime, I am getting older, thank God! By God s Grace, Larry
