1 ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH Volume 25 Issue 11 November 2014 Join us for! 8:00 and 11:10 a.m. Traditional Services 9:15 a.m. Sunday School 10:25 a.m. Contemporary Service Inside this issue: Thanksgiving Birthdays & Anniversaries Congregational Meeting Memorials 5 Game Night 6 Turkey Dinner 7 Poinsettias 7 Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Psalm 103:1-2 Our power is shut-off, and suddenly we become thankful for electricity. Our garbage is not picked up, and suddenly we become thankful for the garbage collector's weekly stop. A good friend dies, and suddenly we discover how much he meant to us. Our water becomes too polluted to drink or in short supply by a drought, and suddenly we appreciate pure water. Why is it we take for granted the uncounted blessings of life until they are removed from us? Let's give God thanks daily... for being patient with us.... for not forgetting us when we forget him.... for loving and forgiving us.... for music and singing.... for food and clothing.... for home and church.... for health and strength.... for friends and relationships.... for work and productivity.... for rest and leisure.... for those who love and understand us.... for laughter and joy.... for all kinds of blessings. Most of all, we thank God for not withholding from us the blessings of life even though we too often take them for granted. Lord, grant us a spirit of gratitude. Have a happy Thanksgiving! Pastor Beck
2 Have we forgotten God? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us. We have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. -Abraham Lincoln Thanksgiving Proclamation, 1863 THANKSGIVING WORSHIP Our annual THANKSGIVING SERVICE at Advent is on Sunday, November 23, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. Let us come, give God our thanks and make a joyful noise unto the Lord, for He has surely been good to us. Sunday, November 23rd 7:30 p.m. VETERAN S DAY NOVEMBER 11TH Remember to salute and thank our veterans! May God richly bless those who have served and sacrificed in our armed forces. May God give us an understanding mind and a grateful heart as we consider all who have sacrifice so that we might live. We give thanks for their response to the call of duty to further our nation s desire for justice and freedom throughout the world. Amen 2
