His response was support, encourage, work as a team and help us in our faith. What a blessing, but also such a responsibility! As the busyness of summer has us going all in different directions, take time to pray for our church family. Pray that God will help us support each other in all we do. Have faith in God s healing power as we continue to pray for Tony VD, Bertha, Len D, Allan N and all those in our church family struggling with an illness or whatever it may be. 3

4 Deacons July 15-Resonate Global Missions- In 2017, Synod approved the joining of Christian Reformed Home missions and Christian Reformed World Missions into now Resonate Global Missions. They will continue to partner with churches in the USA and Canada to plant churches, do Campus ministry, and train and equip pastors to develop them into future leaders of the CRC. July 22- World Renew- World Renew envisions a world where people experience and extend Christs compassion and live together in hope as Gods community. With partnerships in 130 churches in 30 different countries World Renew is greatly involved in Community development, Disaster Response & Rehabilitation and Peace and Justice. July 29- Food Grains Bank Local- Donations collected today will go the local food grains growing project. The proceeds from the harvest will be matched 4 to 1 by the Canadian government. Working together to end World hunger is the goal of all involved. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank You Recently, we have received an offering or gift from your congregation for the work of Back to God Ministries International. Blessings on your work in the Kingdom, and enjoy your summer! Paul Consistory Meeting Minutes July 9, 2018 Art welcomed all to the meeting, Gys led with a devotion from the elders handbook. Agenda and minutes were adopted with one addition. New elders have been made aware of all their responsibilities. Elections were made and are as follows, Art for chair of consistory and pulpit supply, Randy for vice chair, Tracy for clerk, Alina for education, and Helen for worship. Elders reported on visits and reviewed Pastor Vink s report. Committee reports were given and ended with mutual censure. Next meeting scheduled for August 13, Art closed with prayer. 4

5 Building Fundraiser The church is currently fundraising for a new tin roof and some fellowship hall upgrades. We are just two weeks in and have already raised $39,000 of the $120,000 goal. Thank you to everyone who has already donated. Just a reminder, all donations should be in a sealed envelope with building fund in the memo of the cheque. The envelopes can be put into any offering. Thanks, -Building committee Search Team After working through the "More Than a Search Committee" document, the Council desires the congregation's input in forming the Search Committee. In addition to prayers and words of encouragement, the congregation has opportunity by way of the provided form to suggest names of members who could serve well, reflecting various segments of the congregation in doing so. Council determined that the committee should have seven(7) members, including a chairperson, a council representative and five (5) others. Please submit your suggestions by Sunday, July 22. Council will then form and mandate the committee. Suggestion forms are in your mail box as well as located in the foyer. Please complete and submit yours in the offering or give directly to Helen or Stephan. Thank you, The council. Iron Springs News Young People s: It is YPs turn to worship with the residents from ARSCH today. If you can make it, please meet at Dave and Julia's at 5:45pm so that we can arrange rides. We will be heading to DQ after for a tasty treat. Seasoned and Spiced will have an outing to the Helen Shuler Nature Center on Monday July 30th. We will meet there no later than 10:30 for a tour and have a potluck picnic in Indian Battle Park to follow. The walking on the tour will be easy and is wheelchair accessible. Please bring a lawn chair and something for the potluck. Please let Annie know if you plan to attend before Friday July 27, Thank you. 5

6 The Pastor s Perspective When our Council-appointed guides led us into Bertha s place, Shirley noticed immediately the Shalom plaque by the front door. We re home! she pronounced. Why would she say such a thing? Why do I close the benediction (Parting Blessing) with Shalom? There s a history here. If you were to visit our home in Byron Center and observed what adorns walls, and shelves, particularly in my office, you d notice a variety of Shaloms. Thanks to folks who shared them upon trips to Israel, we have them in English and Hebrew. They include carved- wood ones, ceramic tiles, a coffee mug and elaborate portrayals. But, having and hanging them doesn t guarantee peace at 7394 Rock Canyon Dr. Similarly, closing worship with God s blessing and a Shalom, proclaims both a wishing and a blessing, but it s not a guarantee, and may even be misunderstood. I d been pronouncing the benediction with the Shalom conclusion for some time when one younger worshiper asked his dad, Dad, why does Pastor Vink tell us to Shut-up! at the end? I learned early in my preaching ministry that what s said is not always what s heard. When folks tell me what they heard, I realize it may be what they wanted to hear. Besides, regarding the young man s question, we did not allow our boys to use Shut-up! Shalom is simply an Old Testament word that, when translated simply into peace, loses its richer implication. The word shalom or peace appears in the Bible 230 times. The writer in Psalm 4 speaks of lying down and sleeping in peace. What s the peace he has in mind? It appears he s thinking about things being right between God and him, so that whether the psalmist sleeps for the night or until eternity, God and he are at peace. That s the essence of shalom! It implies a personal wholeness and well-being as well as having shalom in all our relationships, the vertical with the Creator and then our horizontal ones, with creatures as well as creation. I like Rabbi Hushner s illustrating it with this story: I was watching two children, a boy and a girl, playing in the sand. Hard at work by the water's edge, they were building an elaborate sand castle with gates, towers, moats and internal passages. Just when they had nearly finished their project, a big wave came along and knocked it down, reducing it to a heap of wet sand. I expected them to burst into tears, devastated by what had happened. But they surprised me. Instead, they ran up the shore away from the water, laughing and holding hands, and sat down to build another castle. They taught me an important lesson. All the things in our lives, all the complicated structures we spend so much time and energy creating, are built on sand. Only our relationships to other people endure. Sooner or later, the wave will come along and knock down what we have worked so hard to build up. When that happens, only the person who has somebody's hand to hold will be able to laugh. -Rabbi Harold Hushner, in Kindred Spirits Jesus used Shalom saying farewell to troubled disciples. John 14:27: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. What a blessing! What an encouragement! I hope you hear that also on Sundays. When things are right between you and God, and between you and others, you have the basis for Jesus shalom. Anyhow, that s how I say it. Pastor George Vink 6
