My problem is I don t know what it means, except that so much will change when I arrive. This past year has found me whining and complaining a lot. It has been my health issues with my leg and now hip that has caused me to make the most noise. But it is also the winding down of what has been my life. For years I have been helping churches plan their future. a future in which I was involved. Now I have session meetings where our plans are for me to begin to phase out. Life as I have known it is about to come to an end. Chasing after something to hang on to I arrived at some comments Paul makes in the book of Philippians. This book finds him in prison. What was familiar to him which was spreading the gospel throughout the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea area had come to an end. This book finds him jailed in Rome still hoping he would be released in order to take the gospel to Spain. His life in Philippians has taken a dramatic shift. Yet, I don t hear him complaining and whining. Rather he writes this: I m glad in God, far happier than you would ever guess happy that you re again showing such strong concern for me. Not that you ever quit praying and thinking about me. You just had no chance to show it. Actually, I don t have a sense of needing anything personally. I ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. I don t mean that your help didn t mean a lot to me it did. It was a beautiful thing that you came alongside me in my troubles. Philippians 4:10-14 The Message I have three months to live into this passage. I have been assured by so many of you that my life will not be over. I have a home, a wife and family here, and a marvelous opportunity to drop everything on any particular day and just go fishing. I ve dreamed about (Continued on page 3) Worship Lessons October 5 October 12 October 19 October 26 World Communion The Bible Old Testament New Testament Reformation Day

The Mission Study Committee has been meeting regularly and working diligently to determine the status of our church now and where we want to go in the future, but we need input from EVERY member of the congregation. This will help us as a church body to serve the needs of our worshipers, our community, Guess Who s Coming to Dinner Guess who s coming to dinner is back! What is this, you may ask? It s a great way to join others for dinner and conversation. There is one catch.the host won t know who is coming for dinner and the guest won t know who will be attending with them. Those interested in attending a dinner would be contacted and told the place and time to show up. It is a fun evening and a great way to get to know others in our congregation! If you are interested in hosting a dinner or attending, or both, please complete a form and turn it in to the church office or contact Cindy for sale with over 20 vendors signed up. If you have any long rectangular tables we could borrow for our vendors to use that day, please contact one of the PW ladies. The Christmas Tea will be on Tuesday, December 9th at 6:30 PM. Watch for more details in November. What s a Christian to do with Halloween? These days, children associate Halloween with trick-or-treating and candy. But centuries ago, Christians named the night before All Hallows Day (All Saints Day) All Hallows Eve. As the faithful prepared to remember people who were entrusted to resurrection life, they adopted various traditions to poke fun at death. Around the world, Christians observe Halloween differently: In Poland, kids pray aloud while walking through forests to comfort souls of the dead. In Spain, tolling church bells remind people to remember the saints. In Finland, so many people light candles in cemeteries that the observance is called seas of light. Although some Christians steer clear of Halloween, others use it as an evangelism opportunity and provide entertainment alternatives such as harvest parties. No matter your views, you can remind children that, though it s fun to pretend, we can always be ourselves with God. Whatever our features and flaws, we need not and cannot hide from God behind masks. God made us in his holy image and loves us as his holy hallowed! children.
5 Page 5 From Pastor Bruce Dear kids, I hope you are enjoying Sunday School. I like the idea of you all being together and helping one another. It is so important that you learn about the Bible and do so by helping one another. Years ago Sunday School didn t exist. Very young children like yourself worked. Sunday was a day that was recognized as a day when no one worked. Children worked long hours. For example, in the 1780 s a law was passed that children would only work twelve hours per day. So, Sunday School was developed to teach young people how to read and write. They practiced their reading at home with their parents by reading the Bible. In 1870 public schools were set in place to educate children. Sunday was still not a work day, so the Sunday School time shifted to become a time to teach Christianity. The best discussion though I think is what you have with your Mom and Dad. Ask them about where they learned about Christianity and from whom. I could make for a great conversation. Thinking of you, Bible Verses of the Month Go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone. Mark 16:15
