3 Gather in Prayer and Service April Is Child Abuse Prevention Month Warning Signs of Abuse Children who are abused may show physical and behavioral signs. You may be a child s only lifeline to safety. Please pay attention to the treatment of children around you. Child abuse is everyone s business. If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected in Illinois, call ABUSE ( ). Children who have been abused or neglected may be: Nervous around adults or afraid of certain adults Reluctant to go home (coming to school early or staying late, for example) Very passive and withdrawn--or aggressive and disruptive Tired often or complaining of nightmares, or not sleeping well Fearful and anxious Showing sudden changes in behavior or school performance Possible signs of physical abuse: Unexplained burns, bruises, black eyes and other injuries Apparent fear of a parent or caretaker Faded bruises of healing injuries after missing school Possible signs of sexual abuse: Difficulty walking or sitting, or other indications of injury to the genital area Sexual knowledge or behavior beyond what is normal for the child s age Running away from home Possible signs of neglect: Missing school frequently Begging for or stealing money or food Lacking needed medical or dental care Being frequently dirty Using alcohol or other drugs Saying there is no one at home to take care of him or her Possible signs of emotional abuse: Acting overly mature or immature for the child s age Extreme changes in behavior Delays in physical or emotional development Attempted suicide Lack of emotional attachment to the parent Many of these signs may also be present in children exposed to violence in their homes and communities, like domestic violence and gang violence. These signs don t prove that a child is being abused. But they could be a signal that the child and his or her family need help. Also know the signs of an abusive adult. Consider the possibility of abuse if a parent or caretaker: Seems unconcerned about the child s welfare at school or at home Denies problems at school or at home or blames the child for them Sees the child as worthless or a burden Avoids discussing the child s injuries or gives conflicting explanations for them Abuse alcohol or other drugs Seems isolated from other parents and school and community activities Uses harsh physical discipline or asks other caretakers to use it Depends on the child for emotional support Seems indifferent to the child Seems secretive or tries to isolate the child from other children Frequently blames, belittles, or insults the child These signs don t prove that an adult is abusive. But they could be a signal that the adult and his or her family need help. 3

6 Gather in Prayer and Service ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Office of the Archbishop Post Office Box 1979 Chicago, Illinois This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. --Psalm 118: 24 As we continue the celebration of the resurrection of the Lord, we are grateful to the elected officials who heard our opposition to HB When we act together, great things are possible! May we be as eager to express our thanks as we have been in expressing our opposition to this legislation. According to the Catholic Conference of Illinois, the legislators whose names appear below did not support HB These elected officials recognized that attempts to weaken the health care right of conscience, prohibit any regulation of abortion and expand taxpayer funded abortions were offensive not only to Catholics, but to many people of good will in Illinois. Please call the following legislators to thank them for standing up against HB (The office contact information for these legislators can be found at under Legislator Lookup, or by calling or ) While much work remains, today we commend the following representatives for their help in defeating HB 2354: Speaker Michael Madigan Rep. 7 Gatherings from the Parish and the Community Prime Timers Calling all bridge players. We are playing Bridge in the Convent tomorrow, Monday, at Noon. The Prime Timers are a friendly group and welcome new players at any level. There is still time to make a reservation for our historic church visits. We will visit the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, have lunch at a nearby Ukrainian restaurant and then visit the lovely St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. St. Stan s was an early Polish immigrant church. Now, it is famous for its iconic monstrance of Our Lady of the Sign, Ark of Mercy. It is a nine-foot, hand-carved and painted monstrance featuring Mary atop a gold leaf decorated ark flanked by two kneeling angels. This intricately detailed and symbol-laden monstrance is believed to be the world s largest and was created by Polish sculptor Stefan Niedorezo. There have been several articles recently about it in the Catholic New World, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Chicago. We will carpool from the Convent at 10:00 AM. We do ask for a $5 donation for each Church. Please call Ann O Connell at to make a reservation by April 27. Worth Seeing/Hearing Catherine of Siena Lecture Catherine and the Voice of the Laity Wednesday, April 29 7:00 PM evening prayer, 7:30 PM lecture The evening begins with prayer in honor of St. Catherine of Siena led by MaDonna Thelen, Dominican University s Director of Service Learning. Karen Scott is the featured speaker at the Siena Center s annual celebration in honor of Catherine of Siena. A noted historian on Catherine, she will address themes that the Medieval Dominican inspired in her time and continues to inspire in ours: reflection on the voice of the laity and the role of women. Catherine s creative use of imagery taken from ordinary life made her preaching and writing fruitful among varied audiences. While her time and ours are very different, her courage, graceful expression, and spiritual depth offer us a model for our own time. Scott, director of the Catholic Studies program at DePaul University, writes about the Medieval mystic. The event will be held at Dominican University s Priory Campus, Chapel & Auditorium, 7200 Division Street, River Forest. Admission is free to all. For more information, call the Siena Center at Need Help Dealing with Our Stressful World? Ms. Margaret Lukomski, an experienced and licensed professional therapist, is available to assist people facing marital and family difficulties and other personal issues. Ms. Lukomski, LCPC, is also a certified alcohol and drug counselor. She is at St. Bernardine Church one evening per week; fees for her services are reasonable. To schedule an appointment, please call Catholic Charities Holbrook Counseling Center at Youth Want the up-to-date news on what is going on in St Luke Youth Ministry? Contact Amanda to sign-up for the list. Rebuilding Together Ministry Saturday, April 25, teens and adults from St Luke Parish teamed up with the organization Rebuilding Together to do some beautifying work on the Martin Luther King Jr. Boys and Girls Club in Chicago. These volunteers met early in the morning to spend their Saturday painting the center. Groups all over the country made a difference in their local neighborhoods doing renovation work on low-income homes and helping at community centers like the Boys and Girls Club. The MLK Boys and Girls Club serves between 150 and 200 low-income kids every day. Please join me in congratulating and thanking the participants for their efforts to make a difference in their community and for representing the values and spirit of the St. Luke Parish community so beautifully. REMINDER: The last formation meeting for those participating in the summer service trips is today 2-4pm in Waldron Hall. NO SLYME TONIGHT Thank you to all who participated in Rebuilding Together. Next SLYME Night: May 2 Looking for a Flexible Job? Every high school student is looking for a little more cash. Right now the parish is looking for a few more high school students who could work on Saturdays at the Rectory. The shifts are 9AM-1PM and 1-5PM on Saturdays. Dates you work can be very flexible. For more information, contact Sue at the rectory Join the Facebook group SLYME St Luke Youth Ministry Experience or friend Amanda. 9 Gatherings from the Community Fighting Poverty to Build Peace For the poorest countries, the food crisis is a double marginalization. This [food] crisis is characterized not so much by a shortage of food, as by difficulty in gaining access to it and by different forms of speculation: in other words, by a structural lack of political and economic institutions capable of addressing needs and emergencies. Malnutrition can also cause grave mental and physical damage to the population, depriving many people of the energy necessary to escape from poverty unaided. This contributes to the widening gap of inequality, and can provoke violent reactions. All the indicators of relative poverty in recent years point to an increased disparity between rich and poor. No doubt the principal reasons for this are, on the one hand, advances in technology, which mainly benefit the more affluent, and on the other hand, changes in the prices of industrial products, which rise much faster than those of agricultural products and raw materials in the possession of poorer countries. In this way, the majority of the population in the poorest countries suffers a double marginalization, through the adverse effects of lower incomes and higher prices (no. 7). Fighting Poverty to Build Peace Pope Benedict XVI January 1, 2009 St. Agatha School Calling All Alumni St. Agatha Catholic School is planning an Alumni Celebration on Saturday, May 30, at St. Ignatius College Prep.
