This star guided them to the Lord. On this feast of Epiphany, when we celebrate the manifestation of Christ to the world, it might be good to ask ourselves where we find the "stars" in our own lives that lead us to Christ. Each of us is deeply aware of those people and situations that draw us away from the Lord. How aware are we of situations and people that lead us closer to the Lord? Perhaps we can take the opportunity today to ask the Lord to send more "stars" into our lives--to present us with situations and people who truly make manifest the very presence of God. As we listen to the holy scriptures today, let us ask God to give us the strength to turn away from those, like Herod, who deceive us, and to turn more readily to those who show us the way to truth and goodness in the Lord. 3 January 4, Page 3 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Epiphany celebrates the wake-up calls of life, the showings of God's majesty and power in the person of Jesus. The feast alerts us to look for signs of the Lord's grace and action in our lives today. In this context, the call of the Second Vatican Council to reform the sacramental life of the Church, including our pattern of care for the sick, is indeed a holy awakening. Prior to the 1960s, our care for the sick had collapsed in the popular imagination into something everyone called "last rites."an immensely complicated ritual, with anointing accompanied by quickly muttered Latin prayers, was enacted for a marginally conscious person at "death's door."by the time a priest was called, the sick person might not be able to receive viaticum, or derive much personal benefit from the ritual. The healing effects of the sacrament, investing suffering with the dignity of a link to Christ's cross, and the immense assurance of forgiveness for a person reviewing the life journey, were hidden. Suddenly, an epiphany swept through the Church, and the way we care for the sick was utterly transformed. It took several centuries, however, for the Church to reach that moment of renewal. --Rev. James Field The Epiphany of the Lord Little Drummer Boy Did you know that the only reason we say that there were three wise men is that they brought three gifts? And these special gifts--gold, frankincense, and myrrh--tell us much. When one king visited or sent an ambassador to another, he would give a gift of gold to show that he acknowledged the kingship of the other. The second gift is a type of incense, which was used in Jesus time to worship God. The gift of myrrh is oil used to anoint the dying. So these gifts remind us of Jesus' kingship, divinity, and his dying for us. So what gifts do we have for Jesus? Maybe we can take a hint from the wise men. If we acknowledge Jesus as king, maybe a better gift than gold would be to pledge our obedience to him. A better way than burning incense to pay homage to Jesus' divinity is to take time to pray throughout the day. As for the gift of myrrh, we can give Jesus the crosses we bear each day. The song "Little Drummer Boy" reminds us that the best gift is not necessarily the most expensive. Instead, it is the simple gift that only we can give. Let Epiphany remind us to offer our lives to Jesus each day. 4 January 4, Page 4 Knights of Columbus Council Sacred Hearts The Epiphany of the Lord Today's readings remind us not to discourage those who misunderstand the real meaning of Christ and Christmas, but to instead use the opportunity for welcome and conversion. The Church especially chose these readings because she sees in them symbols of the universality of God's people. "Lift up your eyes and look around: all are assembling and coming toward you" the prophet says. Are we to turn away or belittle any who come to find the Lord, in whatever small way? Saint Paul, in the second reading, reminds us that as Gentiles, we too, come from pagan roots and were once misunderstood. Yet we, too, have been welcomed. We now share the same inheritance, are part of the same body of Christ. The Christmas season is not the time to turn away anybody. Rather, it is the time to be catholic, that is, accepting of all. 5 January 4, Page 5 COÄNG ÑOAØN THAÙNH GIUSE 4 tháng Giêng Lễ Hiển Linh Phúc Âm: Mt 2, 1-12 "Chúng tôi từ phương Ðông đến thờ lạy Ðức Vua". Lễ Hiển linh ngày nay không còn long trọng như ngày trước. Nó không còn là cao điểm có nhiều Chúa Nhật theo sau làm thành một mùa phụng vụ Hiển linh nữa. Nay, Hiển linh chỉ còn là lễ sau hết của mùa Giáng sinh. Và như thế cũng dễ hiểu. Vì Hiển linh là gì, nếu chẳng phải là việc Ðấng Linh thiêng tỏ hiện ra? Thế mà còn việc tỏ hiện nào rõ rệt hơn chính Ðấng Linh thiêng mặc lấy xác thịt sinh ra làm người? Giáng sinh là Hiển linh vậy. Tuy nhiên, lễ Hiển linh hôm nay cũng có một đối tượng rõ rệt. Nó nói đến việc Thiên Chúa Giáng sinh làm người tỏ mình ra cho dân ngoại, cũng như Người đã tỏ mình ra cho dân Dothái khi gọi mục đồng đến thờ lạy và khi để cho ông Simêon và bà Anna nhìn thấy Người nơi Ðền thờ. Lễ Hiển linh nằm trong mầu nhiệm Thiên Chúa tỏ bản tính thần linh của Người ra cho mắt phàm của loài người chúng ta được nhìn thấy Người. Nhưng những kẻ được nhìn thấy Người hôm nay không phải là dân Dothái nữa, mà là các dân ngoại. Và điều này được cả ba bài đọc Kinh Thánh của Phụng vụ Thánh lễ hôm nay đồng thanh nói lên. Nos declara que al principio, Jesús no sólo estaba con Dios, sino que Jesús es Dios (Juan 1:1). Dependiendo de nuestra traducción de las Sagradas Escrituras, Jesús es nombrado ya sea "Palabra" o "Verbo" en el primer pasaje de Juan. Según una canción de Ricardo Arjona "Jesús es verbo, no sustantivo". Y tiene razón. Hay que recordar que Juan no escribió en español, ni siquiera en inglés. El evangelista escribió en griego y aplicó el concepto filosófico del logos a Jesús. El logos, de la filosofía griega se manifiesta en Jesús de Nazaret. Para los griegos esta noticia era asombrosa, porque logos quiere decir palabra activa, es decir, el verbo que actúa y por el cual todo es creado. Juan declara que Jesús es este Verbo, él es el Dios que lo hizo todo y en el cual todos tenemos vida si actuamos como él. El Evangelio de Juan nos desafía a vivir el verbo que es Cristo, no sólo diciendo que somos cristianos, sino actuando como Jesús, cual Verbo Divino. -- Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM LA PALABRA DE DIOS HOY Los magos de oriente siguieron una estrella hasta la casa donde encontraron al Niño Jesús con María su madre. Esta estrella los guio al Señor. En la fiesta de la Epifanía en que celebramos la manifestación de Cristo al mundo pudiera sernos beneficioso preguntarnos dónde encontramos en nuestra propia vida las "estrellas" que nos guían hacia Cristo. Cada uno de nosotros está bien consciente de cuáles son esas personas y situaciones que nos alejan del Señor. Acaso estamos conscientes de las personas que nos acercan al Señor? Tal vez debemos tomar la oportunidad hoy para pedirle al Señor que nos envíe más "estrellas" a nuestra vida, que nos presente a personas y situaciones que manifiestan verdaderamente la presencia de Dios. Al escuchar hoy las Sagradas Escrituras pidámosle a Dios que nos dé la fortaleza para alejarnos de aquellos que, como Herodes, nos engañan y para estar más dispuestos a caminar con aquellos que nos enseñan el camino de la verdad y de la bondad del Señor.
