Psalm I love you, Lord, my strength (Psalm 18). Second Reading You became imitators of the Lord, so that you became a model for all believers (1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10). Gospel You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:34-40). Love Shown in Action Do you receive the word of God with joy as the Thessalonians did? Their faith showed in their actions. They became models for other believers. The first reading tells us to put our faith into action. This passage is part of a long list of ordinances God commanded the Israelites to observe. God will judge us by how we treat our neighbors. God will hear the cries of any whom we neglect or mistreat and will come to their defense. In today s Gospel the Pharisees put the question of God s law to Jesus. Which commandment of the law is the greatest? (Matthew 22:36) How could he possibly choose from all the detailed commandments the Jews observed? He was sure to offend somebody by his answer! Of course, Jesus went right to the heart of the matter. Love is the greatest commandment love of God and love of neighbor. Everything else is based on this. This last weekend of Respect Life Month is designated to focus on the painful assault on human dignity that is Domestic Violence. Domestic violence is a hidden scourge on our families and communities. Those who are victimized often keep it a private matter for various reasons: fear, shame, well-intended efforts to preserve the family. Aggressors, if they even recognize their problem, are not likely to have it addressed. Yet it touches many, and knows no boundaries of race, social class, ethnicity, creed or age (most victims are first abused as teens). Statistics suggest one in four women experience domestic violence in their lifetime, and three in four Americans are reported to know a victim, though most episodes are not reported to the authorities. Domestic violence is any kind of behavior that a person uses to control an intimate partner through fear and intimidation. It includes physical, sexual, psychological, verbal, and economic abuse. Some examples of domestic abuse include battering, name-calling and insults, threats to kill or harm one's partner or children, destruction of property, marital rape, and forced sterilization or abortion. 4 October Page 4 Ngày 1 tháng 11 - LỄ CÁC THÁNH NAM NỮ Ngày lễ đầu tiên trong lịch sử để vinh danh các thánh là ngày tưởng niệm "các vị tử đạo" được cử hành vào đầu thế kỷ thứ tư. Vào đầu thế kỷ thứ bảy, sau làn sóng trộm cắp đột nhập các hang toại đạo, Ðức Giáo Hoàng Boniface IV đã cho thu lượm khoảng 28 toa đầy những hài cốt và chôn cất lại bên trong đền Pantheon, là đền thờ các thần của người La Mã, và ngài thánh hiến đền thờ này như một đền thờ Kitô Giáo. Theo sử gia của Giáo Hội là Bede Ðáng Kính, đức giáo hoàng có ý định rằng "Việc tưởng nhớ các thánh trong tương lai, có thể thay cho việc thờ phượng mà trước đây không được dành cho thần thánh nhưng thờ ma quỷ" (Về Việc Tính Toán Thời Giờ). Nhưng việc thánh hiến đền Pantheon, cũng như ngày kính nhớ đầu tiên các vị tử đạo xảy ra vào tháng Năm. Nhiều Giáo Hội Ðông Phương vẫn kính nhớ các thánh vào mùa Xuân, hoặc trong mùa Phục Sinh hoặc ngay sau lễ Hiện Xuống. Tại sao Giáo Hội Tây Phương cử hành lễ này vào tháng Mười Một thì không ai hiểu. Người ta chỉ biết vào năm 800, thần học gia Alcuin người Anglo-Saxon cử hành lễ này vào ngày 1 tháng Mười Một, và người bạn của ông là Arno, Giám Mục của Salzburg cũng theo như vậy. Sau cùng, trong thế kỷ chứ chín, Giáo Hội La Mã đã chấp thuận ngày lễ này. Lời Bàn Ðầu tiên lễ này để kính nhớ các vị tử đạo. Sau này, khi Kitô hữu được tự do tín ngưỡng, Giáo Hội đã dùng ngày lễ này để tỏ lòng kính trọng những người thánh thiện. Vào các thế kỷ đầu tiên, được coi là thánh thì chỉ cần một tiêu chuẩn là được nhiều người công nhận, ngay cả việc chấp thuận của vị giám mục cũng được coi là bước sau cùng để đưa vào niên lịch Giáo Hội. Việc phong thánh bởi đức giáo hoàng lần đầu tiên xảy ra vào năm 973; ngày nay việc phong thánh đòi hỏi cả một tiến trình lâu dài để chứng minh các đức tính thánh thiện. Bây giờ, lễ các thánh để kính nhớ các vị Thánh vô danh cũng như nổi danh. Hai ngày cuối tuần của Tháng Tôn Trọng Sự Sống đã được ấn định để kêu gọi sự chú ý đến tệ nạn xúc phạm nhân phẩm là việc Bạo hành Gia đình. Bạo hành Gia đình là một vết thương che kín của nhiều gia đình và cộng đồng chúng ta. Các nạn nhân thường im lặng chịu đựng vì nhiều lý do khác nhau: vì sợ hãi, xấu hổ, hoặc vì muốn giữ danh tiếng gia đình. Còn những người bạo hành, nếu có nhận ra khiếm khuyết của mình, cũng thường không tìm cách giải quyết. Nhưng vấn đề này đã ảnh hưởng đến nhiều người, thuộc bất cứ sắc dân nào, giai cấp xã hội nào, chủng tộc nào, tôn giáo hay tuổi tác nào (hầu hết nạn nhân bị bạo hành từ lúc còn là thanh thiếu niên). Thống kê cho thấy có 1 trong 4 người đàn bà bị bạo hành trong đời mình, và 3 trong 4 người ở Hoa kỳ cho biết là họ có biết một nạn nhân, mặc dầu hầu hết các trường hợp không được khai báo với nhà chức trách. Bạo hành gia đình là bất cứ thái độ nào mà một người hành xử để kiềm chế một người gần gũi với mình bằng cách đe dọa và làm cho sợ hãi. Bạo hành gia đình gồm có bạo hành thể xác, bạo hành tình dục, bạo hành tâm lý, bạo hành bằng ngôn ngữ, và bạo hành bằng kinh tế. Những thí dụ về bạo hành gia đình gồm có đánh đập, chửi rủa và mắng nhiếc, dọa giết hoặc gây thương tích cho nạn nhân hoặc con cái, phá hủy tài sản, hiếp dâm vợ chồng, và ép buộc ngừa thai hoặc phá thai. La violencia doméstica es un azote oculto que afecta a nuestras familias y comunidades. Sus víctimas mantienen el asunto en privado, por varias razones: temor, vergüenza, esfuerzos bien intencionados por preservar la familia. Los agresores, si es que alguna vez reconocen su problema, es improbable que accedan a tratarlo. Alcanza a mucha gente y no conoce fronteras de raza, clases sociales, etnia, credo religioso o edad (la mayoría de las víctimas son agredidas por primera vez en su adolescencia).
