The sin of the rich man in today s parable was not that he was rich, but that he failed to share his wealth with the beggar at his gate. He knew Lazarus, walked by him every time he came in or out, but did nothing to relieve his suffering. Is there a Lazarus in my life? Next Sunday s Readings The Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 141: Hebrews 1:2-3; 2:2-4 Psalm 95:1-2,6-9 II Timothy 1:6-8,13-14 Luke 17:5-10 This past week Fr. Frank met with the newly constituted parish finance committee. We have begun to look at our financial resources and the challenges that we face as a community. Updates will be reported to the parish in our bulletin and on our website.

6 Page 6 Many of our young adult parishioners are starting college, or returning to college during these last days of August. The parish community keeps them in prayer for these important years of their lives! We would love to keep in touch with our young adults in college! Please send Fr. Frank the student s name, and address! They will receive occasional updates and greetings from St. John the Baptist parish family. Have You Been Asked to Be a Sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation? Sponsor (godparent) is a sacramental ministry. The sponsor takes part in the ritual as a Catholic and provides example from her/his life through living and acting as a full member of the Catholic Church. Because of the seriousness of this ministry, the Church has the following requirements: 1. The sponsor must be a full member of the Catholic Church through Baptism and Confirmation and Eucharist and at least 16 years old (the responsibilities of this ministry are undertaken by an adult). 2. The sponsor must be a Catholic living an active life in the Church who provides good example. Someone married outside the Church is not able to receive Communion and is not able to be a sponsor. Also, a Catholic who has left the Church is not able to be a sponsor of a new member into the Church. 3. When there are two sponsors, they are spiritual parents and are godfather and godmother. 7 Page 7 Exhibit in Washington, D.C. A unique exhibit, God s Servant First: The Life and Legacy of Thomas More, opened Friday, Sept. 16, at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C. It is the only location where the exhibit will appear in the United States. The exhibit includes artifacts never before displayed in the United States as well as relics of St. Thomas More. More was lord high chancellor of England under King Henry VIII from 1529 to He sacrificed prestige, influence, and ultimately his life because he refused to betray his religious convictions. Declaring Thomas More the patron saint of statesmen and politicians in 2000, St. John Paul II said More s life and martyrdom offer a testimony that spans the centuries and speaks to people everywhere of the inalienable dignity of the human conscience. The title of the Washington exhibit is inspired by the words believed to be More s last: I die the King s good servant, and God s first. Organized and sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Christian Heritage Centre at Stonyhurst, England, the exhibit features over 60 artifacts, most of which are from the Stonyhurst College Collections. More than 160 parishioners talked together in small groups about our parish s strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities Message from Father Frank The great turnout of parishioners of all different ages and backgrounds was truly awesome, and I think we all felt the power of the Holy Spirit at work. Great energy, enthusiasm and new life were felt by all of us. Regular updates will be shared in the bulletin, and soon on the parish website. Dr. Pedersen is preparing a report for us, and we will try to publish it in our bulletin and website!
