3 Page 4 Good Friday Collection Pope Francis has asked our parish to support Christians in the Holy Land. Through the Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world to stand in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace in a troubled land. In these challenging times in the Middle East, your support means that our church will conduct parish ministry, provide Catholic education, feed the hungry, build housing for Christians, maintain shrines and operate refugee centers in the Holy Land. Christians, along with all of the clergy and religious who serve in the Holy Land, will deeply appreciate your prayers and financial help! The political, religious and military challenges in the Holy Land are more complex than ever. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. Our parish will support Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection, as requested by Pope Francis. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help carry the cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy Land. PLEASE BE GENEROUS! 4 Page 5 New Pastor for St. John the Baptist Church Bishop Murphy has announced the appointment of the next pastor of St. John the Baptist Church as of this coming June. He is Msgr. Frank Schneider who is presently the pastor of St Elizabeth s Church in Melville. Before becoming pastor of St. Elizabeth s, Msgr. Schneider was an associate priest at St. Patrick s in Glen Cove, and subsequently was sent to Rome to study Canon Law. Upon return he became Chancellor of the Diocese of Rockville and then Rector of the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington. I have not had the opportunity to work with Frank in any mutual parish assignments. However, I would suggest that you visit the website of St. Elizabeth s Church in Melville ( This parish has long had the reputation of being a center of collaborative ministry and innovative programs along with many diverse parish ministries. I think that by viewing their website you would be able to get a good idea of his many gifts and his collaborative approach to parish ministry. I can also relate that I spoke with Msgr. Schneider when he had called previously to speak about the pastoral ministry at St. John s and the Parish Pastoral Staff. He credits the account I gave him of the community here and the experience working together as a Parish Staff with convincing him to apply to be appointed as the next pastor here. He also asked me to convey to all the parishioners that he is looking forward to coming to St. John s and working with all of you. Let us pray that Msgr. Schneider s pastoral ministry at St. John s will be a support to the journey of faith of all and elicit new gifts within the community to meet the future needs of being the Body of Christ here. Individual Celebration of Reconciliation Tuesday, March 22nd 4 5 P.M. PREPARATIONS FOR THE SEASON OF LENT We will begin our preparation for the Season of Lent at all the Celebrations of Sunday Eucharists. We will enhance our liturgies in three ways: 1. We will cover our baptismal font and reopen it at the Easter Vigil (March 26th, 2016) 2. We will burn palm and begin the process of making ashes for use on Ash Wednesday (February 10th, 2016) 3. We will bid farewell to our Alleluias by not singing them again until the Easter Vigil. Our Alleluia banner will lead us out in the closing procession. COMMEMORATING THE SEASON OF LENT IN THE DOMESTIC CHURCH Sundays of Lent March 19/20 9:15 & 11:15 A.M. Eucharists Before the First Sunday of Lent, we will send by several items to families in our Religious Education Program which they can use at home to commemorate the Season of Lent. These texts will include Table Prayers for use at meals and reflections on the readings from the Table of God s Word (Bible or Scripture). At the 9:15 & 11:15 Eucharist on each of the Sundays of Lent we will offer a brief presentation of the suggestions for the coming week s commemoration of Lent. We invite every family to join in this process at home for each of the five weeks of Lent. These reflections could be made reference during your table prayers of grace before or after a meal together.
6 Page 6 Page 7 Schedule of Lent 2016 Continued Parish Outreach Soup Supper We join for a simple common meal to reflect on those in need and to share our resources Date: Tuesday, March 22nd WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS OF LENT Early Christians emphasized the celebration of the first day of the week, the Lord s Day or Sunday. It is the memorial day of the resurrection, which we celebrate in faith; it is the day of expectation of the Lord s return, which we celebrate in hope; and it is the day of the actual presence of the Lord among his followers, and we commune with him there in love in word and sacrament. As Christianity developed, Wednesday was the anniversary of Jesus betrayal and arrest and Friday was the weekly memorial of Jesus' crucifixion and death. These two days were observed as stational days, that is, days of fasting and penitential prayer. This tradition ultimately became part of the Christian observance of the season of Lent. Encouraged by our bishops, we would like to encourage the observance of these days in our parish during the season of Lent. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays 7:30 P.M. The Church March 25 North Shore Clericus WEDNESDAY ECUMENICAL PRAYER Each Wednesday in Lent at 12 noon we will join with members of the Churches of the North Shore Clericus for Ecumenical Prayer at a different area Church each week with one of the local Ministers offering a homily. The Ecumenical Prayer schedule: March 25 Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church 716 Route 25A, Rocky Point, Rev. T.J. Turner. Once again the North Shore Clericus will sponsor mid-week Lenten Services on the Wednesdays of Lent. These are annual events, which we have enjoyed for many years. The services are at 12:00 Noon. Bring a sandwich, the host church will provide dessert and beverages. On Good Friday there will not be a lunch. The offering collected at the services will benefit Suffolk County Prison Ministries

Words of Encouragement for the grieving: The word, joy, has been heard several times in the readings at Mass this Lenten season. How could this be when suffering and death loom large? That is because our hope in is Jesus who enters Jerusalem with a joyous celebration and endures being mortally wounded for others sake. Jesus even reaches out in the midst of his pain to encourage and save with his boundless love and mercy the criminal who calls on him. Jesus joy is in his perfect trust in and union with His Father. As Jesus says, Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise. As we grievers suffer, let us rely on the strength of Jesus to take joy in that belief and be open to our own transformation. As Jesus did, we too can reach out to others with encouragement and hope that while we remember Palm Sunday and the events of Holy Week, the joy of Easter will come for us all. Take Note: The Diocese of Rockville Center is holding its annual Bereavement Conference, Experiencing Merciful Love in Times of Pain, on Saturday, April 23, 2016, 8:30am to 2:00pm at Kellenberg Memorial High School, Uniondale NY. Keynote Address is by Msgr. J. Brian Bransfield author of Life Everlasting, the Mystery and the Promise. All faiths welcome. 8 Page 9 Parish Outreach Thank you Lord For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, for health and food, For love and friends for those who helped on St. Patrick s Day Events can only be a success if there is a community of people willing to plan, cook, set up, attend, and clean up. We are particularly thankful for all those who made this event a huge success Thank you to all the families who supported us by attending and/or by donating raffle items. For everything thy goodness sends. * We give thanks! *Ralph Waldo Emerson It was a wonderful night. Reserve the date on your calendar for next year. March 11, 2017 Simple Supper Eat Simply so Others can Simply Eat Tuesday, March 22 at 6 PM in the Parish Hall In two days you are all invited to take part in a simple meal of soup, bread, water, and pound cake. Everyone is invited. The meal is free Think about making this part of your Holy Week observance. This year we will give our support to, Franciscan Foundation for the Holy Land (ffhl.org). We thought that support for those suffering in the Holy Land would be a wonderful way to participate in the spirit of Holy Week. We do this as part of the almsgiving that goes with Lent and to answer Jesus call to feed, clothe, and shelter the poor. Donate your loose change or whatever you want to support this good cause. Be sure to check out the website. For many, springtime represents a time of renewal and celebration. For farm workers, it marks the beginning of an arduous season of some of the most backbreaking, dangerous and low-paid work in the nation. The Eastern Farm Workers Association works to find long term solutions to these issues. St. John s was honored to host a Spring Brunch and Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, March 19th in celebration of the ending of winter and the beginning of work to end the strain of mere winter survival. It s a way to help bring fraternity amongst the workers and their families with the recognition of the coming of Easter with the Easter Egg Hunt. The Little Black Book that we use for Lent addressed Jesus use of the words the poor, you will always have with us a few years ago. It stated, Jesus was quoting from the Book of Deuteronomy where Moses is giving a speech to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. Moses tells them that there will be abundance in the new land and thus there is no reason for poverty. Then Moses recognizes, not in a complimentary way, that despite this abundance, the poor you will always have with you. In other words, even though there is enough for everybody, it will probably not be distributed fairly. Far from simply accepting poverty as a fact of life, Jesus is quoting a passage that says that this should not be so. These words obviously resonate with those of us in Outreach. Do we believe that we cannot find a way to share the bounty that God has given us? Do we believe that people must go to bed hungry, ill-clothed, unsheltered? Lent is a good time to think on this. What will our response be to those in need in our community, in our state, in our nation, and in our world this Lent and throughout the year? Our Easter Candle this year has been donated in loving memory of: Rita Moller REMEMBER The Power of One Do you know where your can is? Peggy s Pantry needs coffee, tea, jarred sauce, pasta sides, rice sides, and shaving cream. God Bless, Debbie O Hare
9 Page 10 Palm Sunday has arrived and with the start of Holy Week. The Father William J. Crowley Council of the Knights of Columbus welcomes everyone who has come to our parish to worship, in faith, with us. The name of our council comes from our former pastor who served here from 1959 to his untimely death in Fifty years ago, the men who formed the council in Wading River dedicated their new council to his name. That council exists today and will celebrate its 50 th anniversary just a short distance from where the members of the council built and maintained the council s hall. Today, we meet in the Parish Hall, and are closely involved with the parish life. Our members are Ushers, Lectors, Deacons and Eucharistic Ministers. They are involved in religious education, in outreach, and even in the day to day operation of the parish. We host a major golf outing every year to raise a lot of money that is used to help local charities, including assisting the young men and women who have served this parish and who are going on to college. We host an annual spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction that helps local pro-life groups. If you are a Practical Catholic gentleman of age 18 or older, please consider joining us.
