3 Page 3 Bulletin Series Paul Turner Understanding the Mass 20. Baptismal Font The baptismal font is the womb from which Christians are born. As physical birth happens only once, so does our spiritual birth. Although fonts originated as part of the furnishings for cathedrals, today virtually every Christian church building maintains a font to facilitate the welcome of new members. Fonts have many traditional shapes. Some are round, recalling a mother s womb. Some are cruciform, showing our sharing in the death of Christ. Others are tomb-shaped for the same reason. Still others form an octagon, reminding us that Christ rose on the eighth day of the week, a day outside normal time, like the eternity we will share with him through our baptism. The font may be placed in one of many traditional locations. Some are in a room to themselves. Originally, fonts were in separate buildings. At the Easter Vigil, the assembly would go out to the font to attend the baptisms, then bring the newly baptized into the church for the Eucharist. Some of our fonts, in rooms by themselves, keep this tradition, but small rooms make it difficult for the assembly to celebrate with the newly baptized. For this reason, other fonts are placed in or near the sanctuary for better visibility, or near the door of the church to symbolize our entry into the Christian community. In churches where the faithful enter each Sunday past the baptistry, they may use it to sign themselves with holy water. We remind ourselves of our baptism in Christ each time we enter our churches. Some parishes have a movable font-they wheel it in for baptisms and wheel it out afterwards. It helps visibility but lacks the reverence of a stable place. Many fonts are large enough for full immersion of the candidate. Others are small to accommodate pouring water over the head of an infant. Both forms of baptism are permitted, but a renewed interest in immersion in the universal church is introducing larger fonts in full view of the assembly, suitable for fully symbolizing our death and rising in Christ. Some fonts resemble fountains, with flowing water even when baptisms are not celebrated. The running water symbolizes life in Christ. The font is one of the most sacred areas of our churches. It deserves the reverence of the faithful, for it is there where we are reborn, where our family grows, and where we first meet Christ, whose resurrection is our destiny. Note: The baptismal font will be moved into its permanent space near the alcove where the Blessed Sacrament is currently placed. This will be in place on the first Sunday of March, March 3, Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Virginia St. #170, San Jose, CA 95112, (408)
4 Page 4 The next Hospitality will be February 3, 2019 after the 9:15 and 11:15 Masses. Summary of Meeting January 17, 2019 The Finance Committee reviewed the current expenses and revenues. We continue to monitor expenses carefully and are pleased to note that collections are holding. A subcommittee is investigating the cost effectiveness of converting from oil to gas heat. As part of our ongoing care of the facilities, the church doors will be repaired. No estimates have been received as of yet.
5 Page 5 Preparing for the Blessed Sacrament to move to the center of the sanctuary First weekend of March, 2019 Why do we genuflect? Genuflection is a sign of adoration. We reverence the Blessed Sacrament by genuflecting when we pass by the Blessed Sacrament. Why if I can t genuflect? Those who cannot genuflect may make a deep bow to the Blessed Sacrament. There are two types of bows. One is the deep bow to the Blessed Sacrament or to the altar. The other is the slight bow of the head before we receive Holy Communion. Do I genuflect while Mass is going on? No. During the Sacrifice of the Mass we stand, sit or kneel. There are no extra genuflections during Mass when the Blessed Sacrament is in the center of the sanctuary. Only the priest is directed to genuflect three times during Mass: once after the consecration of the bread, once after the consecration of the wine, and once before Behold the Lamb of God. Do I genuflect when I receive Holy Communion? No. The Church indicates that before receiving Holy Communion we make a slight bow of the head. I am a reader or a Eucharistic Minister. Do I genuflect during Mass? No. We do not add genuflections during the Sacrifice of the Mass. What do I do after I receive Holy Communion? During and after receiving Communion we give thanks to God by singing together the Communion Hymn. After we receive Communion we can choose to sit or to kneel. Both postures are fine. What about sitting down when the tabernacle door closes? After receiving Communion and during the singing of the Communion Hymn, we are free to either kneel or sit. There are no other directions given, except that we all stand for the Prayer After Communion. Why is there a candle lit by the Blessed Sacrament? The candle is a sign that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the tabernacle. Instead of a candle, a veil or cloth over the tabernacle can be used. Does the candle have to be a red candle? There is no preference for any color of the candle by the tabernacle. The above information can be found in church liturgy documents from and the U.S. Bishops.
