Frank will celebrate the 7:30 p.m. mass November is traditionally the month when we remember the Faithful Departed. The All Souls Day envelopes with the names of our beloved departed are placed next to the Tabernacle throughout the month. All Souls Day Mass: Friday, 11/2 at 9:00 a.m. Evening Service of Remembrance: 11/2 at 7:30 p.m.. with Father Frank Next Session This Wednesday, October 31st 7:00 8:00 p.m. in church The Catholic Church and the Occult Fr. Frank will give a brief presentation. Most of the time will be devoted to your Questions and Answers. (Halloween costumes are optional.)

4 Page 4 Bulletin Series Paul Turner Understanding the Mass 8. Responsorial Psalm We often call the responsorial psalm the response to the first reading. That s true, but it s really responsorial since it has a responsory - a refrain that occurs with each verse. The psalm is indeed a response or a comment on the first reading. In ordinary time, the Gospel text we hear falls in the Bible somewhere between last Sunday s Gospel passage and next Sunday s Gospel. The first reading leaps from some place in the Old Testament because its theme resembles the Gospel. The psalm echoes the reading we just heard. It s sort of a grandchild to Sunday s Gospel. In the Book of Psalms, very few psalms have a refrain. (See Psalms 46 and 67, for example.) But on Sundays we treat them all alike. We give them refrains, and we put them in the mouths of our assemblies, often changing them into first person. The refrains that appear in the lectionary, incidentally, are part of the official texts of the Mass. The verses are drawn from another translation. Refrains do not always match the wording in the verses. We have quite a bit of freedom with the psalm. Since psalms were written as songs, the church urges us to sing them at every Mass. But because some assemblies struggle with new music, they can learn one or a few psalms for a whole season. Although easier to sing, their rapport with the first reading may suffer. If we substitute, it s important to replace the psalm with a psalm. It s really not supposed to be a popular hymn, or even a song with a refrain that s drawn from, say, one of the epistles. The reason has to do with how Christians use psalms. Jesus, a good Jew, surely prayed them daily. Many passages of the New Testament quote the psalms to show their fulfillment in the life of Christ. And they have proven useful for prayer in virtually every culture and age of history. We also have freedom to change the structure of the psalm. It doesn t have to be responsorial. We can sing it all together, like a hymn. Listen carefully to the first reading and figure out its connection to the psalm. Then we can really pray the psalm while we sing. They will share their experience of being a member of our parish, and encourage all of us to reflect on how we give back to God through our time, talent and treasure. Please reflect on stewardship in your life and consider filling out the Recommitment Card that is in the pews (and in the bulletin).

Name: Env. Number: Address: Phone: Stewardship Recommitment Weekend During the month of October we are invited to reflect on God s gifts and how we can respond with generous and joyful lives. Stewardship is being part of the Family of Christ here at the parish of St. John the Baptist - following Jesus Christ with our hearts, souls, minds and strength. Last weekend was Accountability Weekend when parishioners offered their reflections on being stewards in our parish family of St. John s. The bulletin last week and this week features a summary of how we have used our financial resources. We hope that it helps members of the parish understand our current situation. With the help of the Finance Committee, Father Frank is working at trimming our budget (in some cases, as much as 20%) so that we can pay our bills this year. We are all asked to reflect quietly and prayerfully how we respond to God s goodness to us. We may be able to Take-a-Step in our prayer, worship service, and our parish giving. Commitment Cards will be in the pews this weekend and can be filled out while you are in church. Please return your commitment card by placing it in the Special Box in the Gathering Area, in the collection basket, or by mailing it back to the parish in the return envelope from your mailing. Let s pray for everyone in our parish family, that we may all be joyful disciples, good stewards!!

7 Page 7 Help us reach our goals this year through your commitment to Stewardship! Strengthen the focus on the Eucharist, including Adoration and Mass attendance. Encourage Christian Service as part of being a teen at St. John the Baptist parish. Integrate teens into Outreach service, and connect with Confirmation candidates. Deepen leadership formation through Core Team prayer and teen participation in outside programs. Encourage education about the Mass through a year-long series in the parish bulletin. Introduce new Mass settings to broaden the parish repertoire of worship music. Continue to be welcoming to young families and strengthen the Family Mass. Publish the Guide to Parish Ministries in conjunction with the Fall Stewardship Renewal. Form a Stewardship Committee to coordinate the active involvement of more parishioners. Begin preparing for the parish 100 th Anniversary, Encourage more regular Mass attendance for parish families, especially those preparing to receive First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Initiate special needs faith formation, using volunteers who have training and expertise. Implement the diocesan program that strengthens the awareness of children and parents concerning boundaries and safety. Strengthen the Recycling Ministry through a broader base of volunteers. Work with Youth Ministry to help integrate Confirmation candidates and teens into Christian Service. Look into forming a friendly visitor ministry. Begin addressing the Facilities maintenance and preventive maintenance based on the work of the Finance Committee and Diocese. Continue to monitor the budget carefully, ensuing another year of balanced budget. Continue to work to reduce the substantial parish debt.

The baskets will be brought in on November 18 and distributed on that day as well. You really do make a difference whether you are adopting a family, making a contribution, or just carrying a can of food to Mass. We are so grateful for your support.. Thanksgiving Morning Mass All families are welcome! Come and be part of Giving Thanks to God on Thanksgiving morning! Mass is at 9:00 with our pastor, Father Frank and our Children s Choir! Please bring some of the food that will be part of Thanksgiving Dinner to be blessed during mass. Fr. Frank will invite children up to the altar to help him Bless the Food.
