4 Page 4 Update Planning the Future of our Parish Initial follow-up about Sunday Mass This past week Fr. Frank convened a small group of parishioners to begin looking at Sunday mass, one of the major trends and concerns that surfaced at the parish meeting last month. Introduction: The Listening Session of September 12 th was discussed by the 10 facilitators, who focused on two Major Trends from that evening: Youth and Sunday Mass. This reflection group of parishioners is being formed to help Fr. Frank and the Pastoral Council discern ways to strengthen Sunday Mass, especially for attendance, young people, and young families. We discussed strengths and challenges of our worship. At this time we decided to focus our own reflections on environment and music. Advent/Christmas and Lent/Holy Week/Easter are the two liturgical times that are when our parish shines, and we so want to re-imagine environment and music to strengthen these times of the Church Year. Now we will be working on Advent and Christmas, when our church can be at its very best to welcome the many who come to pray! We also want to keep in mind during the coming months other areas of our worship that can be strengthened: Liturgical Ministers (ushers, servers, Ems, lectors, cantors) can use on-going formation. Welcoming ministries can be more organized and directed. Adult choir can be strengthened. Avoid masses with no music. Worship aids with the readings. Education is needed for the parish on Liturgy. Young people can serve as lectors at all of our masses. Find ways to involve young people as much as possible during the liturgy. Give some thought to inviting young people around the altar at the Our Father. Review Faith Formation, especially because classes are held during mass times and prevent children from attending.

7 Page 7 Have you recently gotten engaged? Congratulations on this amazing moment in your lives! Please call Fr. Frank or a deacon as soon as possible, so that we can help you set your wedding date here in your parish of St. John the Baptist! In order to set the date, we need to have the "formal interview" required by the Catholic Church. When we meet, we can also talk about marriage preparation, your rehearsal, and all the details that go into your wedding. And please count on our prayers during this blessed time of your Engagement -- your wedding here will be a joyful, beautiful event! Have You Been Asked to Be a Sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation? Sponsor (godparent) is a sacramental ministry. The sponsor takes part in the ritual as a Catholic and provides example from her/his life through living and acting as a full member of the Catholic Church. Because of the seriousness of this ministry, the Church has the following requirements: 1. The sponsor must be a full member of the Catholic Church through Baptism and Confirmation and Eucharist and at least 16 years old (the responsibilities of this ministry are undertaken by an adult). 2. The sponsor must be a Catholic living an active life in the Church who provides good example. Someone married outside the Church is not able to receive Communion and is not able to be a sponsor. Also, a Catholic who has left the Church is not able to be a sponsor of a new member into the Church. 3. When there are two sponsors, they are spiritual parents and are godfather and godmother. We are always ready to answer your questions. Please call the parish center!
