Baptism Preparation Session: 4th Sunday of each month after the 11:15 am Liturgy. 2. Schedule of the Celebration of the Rite of Baptism: April through September - 1st & 3rd Sundays of each month at 1pm. We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who are open to God s call and stand ready to make the best use of their gifts in service to their neighbor through practical works of mercy such as donating food to a food pantry or clothing to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In today s second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians (and us) that all of our gifts are from God and they are given, not for us alone, but for the common good. The generosity of God knows no limits-the miracle at Cana reminds us that whenever we faithfully do as God asks, He can change our gifts of water into wine. October through March - 1st Sunday of each month at 1pm. 4 Page 5 Important Parish News Dear Members of St. John the Baptist Church, January 5, 2016 I received confirmation today from the Diocese of Rockville Centre that at the conclusion of my term as pastor in June 2016, I will be transferred to a new assignment. Although not a complete surprise, this signals a major change in all of our lives. As we both enter into a new chapter in our journey of faith, I will be in touch to offer some further thoughts on what this change can mean. For now, both of us are invited by the Diocese into processes of consultation about the future. I want to encourage you to participate in the part of the process here in St. John s. There will be an Open Meeting for all parishioners to offer input into the appointment of a new Pastor for St. John the Baptist Parish. Parishioners will be invited to indicate the skills and qualities they feel are necessary to lead the parish into the future and to share their thoughts on specific needs they parish may have. Bishop Nelson Perez, the Vicar, the Area Dean, Msgr. William Breslawski and Msgr. Peter Pflomm, Director of Clergy Personnel, will be present to conduct and participate in the meeting. Date: Thursday, February 4, 2016 Time: 7:00 P.M. Place: St. John s Parish Hall
5 Page 6 St. John The Baptist Continuing Care Ministry Blessed are you that mourn, You shall be comforted. Words of Encouragement for the Grieving: This New Year 2016 gives us all the pause to begin anew, try again, move forward, but always in the faithful protection of our God of compassion, mercy, love, and transformation. Beginning now and at times throughout the year I would like to share with you from Understanding your Grief, Ten Essential Touchstones for Finding Hope and Healing Your Heart by Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D., author, educator, and grief counselor. His program for support groups was used by a fellow minister of consolation and bereavement. Alan D. Wolfelt explains in his introduction that sometimes it is the very need to totally understand the experience of grief that can get you into trouble. Sometimes we simply cannot understand the death of someone we have loved so deeply. We cannot understand it now, and we will not understand it ever. I certainly couldn t understand why the doctors couldn t cure my dad s melanoma. I thought, After all, it s only skin cancer. I didn t understand, I protested. In my experience, understanding comes when we surrender: surrender with our need to compare our grief (it s not a competition); surrender our self-critical judgments (we need to be self-compassionate); and surrender our need to completely understand (we never will). The grief that touches our souls has its own voice and should not be compromised by our need for comparison, judgment, or even complete understanding. You see, surrender is not the same as resignation. Actually, surrender to the unknowable mystery is a courageous choice, an act of faith, a trust in God and in ourselves! We can only hold this mystery in our hearts and surround ourselves with love. to be continued. ****** Take Note: St. Anthony s Parish, 614 Route 25A, Rocky Point, has a General Bereavement, Loss of Spouse, Loss of Parent peer support group forming for April running on Tuesdays, 10-11:30AM Contact: Diane Romano (631) ; stabread@optonline.net ******* Please pray for recently deceased of our parish and their families: Bob Concannon ~ Eva Tirado Acevedo

The Park Manager David Zapasek was kind enough to report it to us. If it was your nativity, please contact him at: david.zapasek@parks.ny.gov to arrange for pickup. St. Isidore School on Marcy Avenue in Riverhead is hosting an Open House and Registration for the school year on Sunday, January 31st, 1-3pm. Come visit our school and talk with faculty, administration, parents and students about the wonderful academic and co-curricular activities we have to offer. St. Isidore School focuses on key elements of Catholic education; faith development, academic excellence and dedication to service. These elements set Catholic education apart from other educational options. They are why families make sacrifices to provide their children with a Catcholic education. Refreshments will be served during the Open House. Visit our website at sisriverhead.com to read more information about the school.

8 Page 9 Parish Outreach Peggy s Pantry is the largest part of our Outreach Ministry. We thought you might like to know where our food supplies come from. 1. We are part of the L.I. Cares Food Network and Island Harvest. They provide us with a substantial amount of the food that we are able to give out to our families. 2. Local merchants and farmers. 3. CVS makes some very helpful donations. 4. During the school year many schools, Scout Troops, and community groups run food drives for our benefit. These are very helpful and important supplements to the Pantry. 5. Parishioners provide some food weekly. However, most of the food we get from you comes from the purchases made from the money collected in our monthly collection. We have three shoppers who scan circulars and look for good buys. This is the next most important source of the food after L.I. Cares and L.I. Harvest. 6. Despite all these sources, we sometimes experience shortages in some of the items that we like to keep in the Pantry. For this reason, we created our Power of One Program. Every time you bring to Church one of the items on the Peggy s Pantry Needs List, you help with these shortages. We hope that this is not too much to ask. We are so grateful for all you do. We have two relatively new programs that are also a big help. Our Recycling Program and our St. Patrick s Day Gala have been very helpful in putting us on a sound financial footing. Thank you to the Bennett family for coordinating this Recycling Program and to all of you who place your returns in our bin in the upper parking lot. Pope Francis is calling us to be mindful of the poor. It is our hope that programs like ours help people to answer his call. Linus Ministry The Linus Ministry will be meeting this Thursday, January 21. This group meets on the third Thursday of the month from 10 am to 12 noon from September through June. The members crochet, quilt and knit blankets for those who are ill and/or homebound. The ministry consists of people whose skill level ranges from expert to beginner. You can contact the Outreach Office at ext 22 if you would like to become part of this wonderful ministry. Free Dental Screening and Cleaning For Children Friday, February 5 Stony Brook University Dental Care Center Call for an appointment: Let the Power of One Shine Brightly Bring an item of food to Mass next Sunday along with your Recycling. Peggy s Pantry needs jelly, mayonnaise, salad dressing, dish and laundry soap.. God Bless, The Outreach Staff Save the Date - St. Patrick s Day Gala Saturday, March 12, Donations for raffles are needed.
9 Page 10 In the second reading for the second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Paul reminds us that There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit. On Monday, the nation honors the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. Everyone has been given unique gifts and as stewards of those gifts we all have a responsibility to use them wisely and effectively. Some might have the gift of oration, as was the case with Martin Luther King, Jr. Some might have the gift of coordination; others might have the gift of long term planning. If you have been reading this column for a while you might expect me to go into my obligatory join the Knights of Columbus paragraph at this point. But I won t. Instead, consider first, your particular gift. Perhaps you could be a great Lector. Perhaps you could be a great Usher. Perhaps, taking the leap into the study for the Permanent Diaconate might be in order. Perhaps you could join a prayer group, or the choir, or the Linus ministry. The list goes on and on. In what seems like an eternity ago, I used to be involved in a periodic publication in the parish called The Spirit: Your Parish and You. This is your parish and your parish needs you. It needs your gifts. The greater community also needs your gifts. Please consider sharing them. And if your gift is through joining the Knights of Columbus, you know who to call.
