4 Page 4 Deacon Fred Finter s Reflections from Last Sunday January 15,2017, 5:00 p.m. mass Note: On the third weekend of each month Deacon Fred Finter and Deacon Vinny Pozzolano exercise their diaconal Ministry of Preaching at one of our masses. Having just celebrated Christmas and New Year s, let me present you with a fact that surely you have not thought of: Easter is relatively late this year so Ash Wednesday falls on March 1. That means we have seven Sundays of winter ordinary time. Plenty of time to prepare for Lent, but don t procrastinate. It s less than 2 months away! We must be like John the Baptist, in today s Gospel. As soon as Jesus appears John proclaims Him, the Son of God. He made it quite clear that he is not the Messiah, but the one preparing the way. We too must prepare His way. The fourth gospel takes great care to present Jesus as distinct from and never subservient to John. John simply appears as forerunner of the one to come. At the same time, the Baptist describes his faith, as I saw the Spirit, come to rest on Jesus. Because John recognized the spirit s presence in Jesus he calls Him the Lamb of God. That title, so familiar to us occurs only here in the New Testament. As this gospel describes it, John the Baptist s relationship to Jesus was always, He must increase, I must decrease. John recognized his vocation was different from Jesus. While Jesus is obviously the subject of this Gospel selection, we might actually learn more about our vocation from our patron saint. Outspoken and strong as he was, John knew and admitted his limitations. He said, I did not know him, and yet he dedicated his life that Jesus might be made known to Israel. Do we do the same? John was a servant, who knew what it meant to be an apostle. This week s readings lead us into the season of ordinary time, with a reflection on, who we are called to be as Christians. It is never a solo performance. We are called together, formed by the word of God to become the light to the nations. Like John the Baptist, we are called to point out the Lamb of God to others by the way we live our lives. While each of today s readings talks about vocation, praying the psalm, which we have just sung, is a dangerous thing. When we pray, Here I am Lord, Send me, we put our own lives on the line. This prayer calls us to join a great company of friends of God and respond with people like Abraham, Isaiah, Samuel and Mary, all whom in their own way, said with Mary, Behold the handmaid of the Lord. As Paul points out in his letter to the Corinthians, he has been called by God and we share that same responsibility to profess our faith. Our response to God and to others who have called us forth ultimately shapes who we become. Paul reminds us that our vocation is to take up our part in the community 1305 meals that served God has formed and sent forth for the sake of the world. Like Paul, John the Baptist is presented to us as a model of a servant of God, who could recognize God s chosen one and step aside when the time came. Do we recognize him? That s the question this week s readings present to each of us individually and as a community, that God has called us together for the sake of the world. It is a question we need to ask again and again. The meaning of our lives depends on the answers we give. It is only to that extent that we can say, who we are. That we can say, Here I am Lord, Send me.
