4 Page 5 St. John The Baptist Continuing Care Ministry Blessed are you that mourn, You shall be comforted. Words of Encouragement for the Grieving: continued from Understanding your Grief by Alan Wolfelt, PH.D. In the first of Ten Touchstones, Open to the Presence of Your Loss, he told us we need to consider all that we feel and we should not try to avoid what we might feel or have learned is a negative emotion. By embracing all of it we can move through the wilderness of grief and allow ourselves to be healed. Today we will take a quick look at Touchstone Two, Dispel the Misconceptions of Grief. He writes: Misconception 1: Grief and Mourning are the same thing. Grief is the constellation of internal thoughts and feelings we have when someone we love dies.mourning is when you take the grief you have on the inside and express it outside yourself. Talking about the person who died, crying, expressing your thoughts and feelings through art or music, and celebrating special anniversary dates that held meaning for the person who died are just a few examples of mourning.. When you don t honor a death loss by acknowledging it, first to yourself and then to those around you, the grief will accumulate. Then the denied losses come flowing out in all sorts of potential ways (e.g. deep depression, physical complaints, difficulty in relationships, addictive behaviors), compounding the pain of your loss. At times, of course, you grieve alone, but expressing your grief outside yourself is necessary if you are to slowly and gently move forward in your grief journey. To be continued ******* Please pray for recently deceased of our parish and their families: Margaret McKenna ~ Vita Sanfilippo ~ Margaret Tribble Martha Richard ~ Carlo Oliveri ~ Patricia Cox
5 Page 6 Dear Parishioners: Our Parish is truly blessed by our Lord and as One Faith, Family and Community we continuously answer God s call to share our gifts to help build His kingdom. Through our prayer and worship, our sacramental life, and ministries that serve others and bring hope and compassion, we are truly united as one. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is another opportunity for us to join together with our entire Long Island faith community and provide services which our parish alone could not provide. By supporting the Appeal, we can impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across our Island through programs that teach, heal, support, nurture and feed. I am continually amazed by the love and support that you, our parishioners, have for our Parish. Please know that our parish will also benefit financially by your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Once we reach our goal, 20% of the funds we raise come back to the Parish to use for our own needs. Please remember that every pledge or gift is important and will help us reach our goal, but more importantly answer our Holy Father s call to show mercy to others by feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, welcoming strangers, offering instruction, and giving comfort. Imagine how many lives we can impact if we all participate in this mission. I ask you to prayerfully consider being a part of our parish family effort by giving in proportion to how the Lord has blessed you. Thank you for the many ways you gratefully share your gifts. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones. Sincerely yours in Christ,
