5 Page 5 MARCH SUMMUMER YOUTH MISSIONS TRIP This summer our high school students (including current 8 th graders) have the opportunity to attend a Mission Trip to Texas. The plan is to leave on Sunday, July 7 early in the morning and return late on Saturday, July 13. We will be working on a farm just outside of Dallas that is run by my friend, Amos Wilson (not relatedhe is from India). We will work on the farm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, spending Friday at the Hurricane Harbor Water Park in Arlington, TX. The farm is Mars Hill Farm, located just south of Dallas in Ferris, Texas, marshillfarm.com/. The purpose of Mars Hill is to help refugees learn how to farm and help them to grow their own crops on plots of land loaned to different refugee families. They sell flowers, honey, and beef to help pay for the farm. During the week we will primarily be clipping, cultivating, and harvesting flowers to sell. The farm grows 90,000+ flowers, and also raises cattle and bees. Along with flower harvesting, we will also do basic yard work and brush clean up. We will give them a boost of labor at a very busy time for the farm. Currently, there are two people from Syria working with my friend, Amos, on the farm. I think this is a great introduction for students to foreign missions without leaving the United States. They will meet and work with people from India, Syria, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Myanmar- and who knows where else! We will be staying in a nearby hotel during the week and my plan is to take students into downtown Dallas to see things like the place JFK was assassinated and also experience life in Dallas. Depending on the size of the group, I would like to take students to a close friend s home who is also from India to experience an authentic Indian meal and hear about life in North Eastern India. Students will need to raise/pay $ each for this trip and chaperones will have to pay for a portion of their trip. I would like to ask you to please pray and consider donating money towards this trip to help cover student fees and to help cover the costs of the chaperones. If you feel led to donate towards this trip, checks can be made out to FBC and in the memo put 2019 Texas Mission Trip. You can also donate online on the church s website. Students that are interested in the trip need to see Pastor David for an application and submit that application by April 15. A nonrefundable $ deposit is due by May 1. Pastor David

BOOKS Non-Fiction: Mark Patinkin, Up and Running. 6-year old Andrew Bateson is unexpectedly infected by Bacterial Meningitis and begins the fight for his life. An inspirational story of a family s faith and hope in the face of unimaginable adversity. Charlotte Pence, Where You Go, Life Lessons from My Father. Charlotte conveys lessons learned from her father s example of love, loyalty, and faith. A fascinating and insightful look at our Vice-President. Fiction: Ace Collins, The Cutting Edge.. A suspenseful story of what happens after a supermodel is attacked and disfigured. Can she break through her hurt and allow God to heal her? Can the police find her assailant before he comes back to finish the job? Chris Fabry, Looking for You.. A poignant story of a mother who gave up her daughter for adoption at birth, and then has a chance to reconnect with her when the daughter is grown. Very thought provoking and interesting. DVDs: Twentieth Century Fox presents The Robe, starring Richard Burton. A Roman centurion s life is changed when he wins Christ s robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross. Citizens United Productions presents Torchbearer with Phil Robertson. A thoughtful and very interesting presentation of the conflict between the Christian world-view and the humanistic view. As Phil says, When a man stops believing in God, he ll believe in anything.
8 Page 8 UPDATE ON SHEPHERD S TABLE Twenty-nine years ago the Shepherd s Table ministry was started in the basement of First Baptist Church with the mission to provide a hot meal for those in need in our community. Since then, the program has served literally tens of thousands of meals. What started small has grown and flourished under the supervision of passionate leaders and the diligence of faithful volunteers. In addition, the community has been beyond generous in supporting this ministry with donations of food and money. It has been a blessed season of ministry. And so it is with a genuine mix of heartfelt emotions that we announce that the Shepherd s Table ministry will be taking a break after the meals are served on Thursday, March 28 th. Why? Maybe the following analogy will help explain: As I write this letter, renovation has begun in the block adjacent to First Baptist Church--the shopping center that for many years has been home to G&D, Oleson s/prevo s, the laundromat, etc. Those businesses at that location have served Cadillac faithfully over many years. But it is readily apparent that a renovation is needed at that property to best meet the current and future needs of the community. In the weeks and months to come that block will be a beehive of activity as preparations are made for what comes next. Something new and beautiful will be constructed there. But in the meantime, business at that site will come to a halt as the renovation progresses. Waiting is always hard, but the wait will be worth it. Similarly, the ministry of Shepherd s Table at First Baptist Church will be undergoing its own renovation in the months to come that will require a season of waiting. Much like the property mentioned above, Shepherd s Table has served Cadillac faithfully over many years. But as with all properties, ministries, and organizations there are needed seasons of evaluation and renovation. In the Old Testament God commanded the Israelites to periodically let their fields lay fallow. Doing so actually increased their fruitfulness. We believe this Scriptural principle will be applicable here. As Shepherd s Table enters into such a season, we believe the end result will be a fresh vision and approach to meeting the needs of our community. But in the meantime, Shepherd s Table meals will come to a halt after Thursday, March 28 th as the renovation of this ministry progresses. The waiting will be hard, but the wait will be worth it. This ministry could not have accomplished all that it has over the past 29 years without the help of so many. Thank you to the directors Kathy Balzuweit and Jan King. Your labor of love has impacted so many. Thank you to our cook Ed Stark. Your ability to prepare meals for hundreds is truly a special gift. (The chili was my favorite). Thank you to the many donors. Your gifts have been used to be both a physical and a spiritual blessing. Thank you to the many volunteers. Your faithfulness has made such a large operation possible. And thank you to our guests. It has been more than a pleasure serving you. So as you see the progress being made at the old shopping center across the street, think of the progress being made at First Baptist in reimagining how we can best meet the needs of our community. Anticipating what is to come, Pastor Chad Zaucha
9 Page 9 MARCH 2019 CONNECTING WITH OTHERS by Jerry Adams The first series of Connect Group sessions was recently completed. As noted on the church website, Connect Groups are designed to provide a way in which followers of Christ may more intimately connect with others. Essentially, those participating are assigned to small groups of approximately 8 to 10 people. Convening in the Commons each Sunday for one hour, attendees are able to meet and greet others, share backgrounds and interests, discuss the sermon topic of the day, and identify prayer needs. There are a range of groups combining singles and couples as well as groups designed for women and men. Each group has a delegated facilitator who serves as a host helping guide discussions. The initial sequence of gatherings lasted six weeks with additional sessions underway. Connect Groups offer a means of getting acquainted with others. They open the door to more than a Sunday morning handshake or a passing nod. Please, I'm not suggesting a shake and a nod are insignificant. They are important. However, they may not provide the type of interaction desired and/or needed by many. The Connect Group my wife Linda and I attended gave us the opportunity to become warmly acquainted with folks that were both new and old to First Baptist. In communicating their reasons for joining a Connect Group, all expressed the common goal of wanting to bond with others in the church family. Unlike many arrangements designed to bring people together, Connect Groups operate somewhat differently. As noted, sessions are six weeks in length. After that period one has the option of staying with the same group, moving to another group, or opting out of the program. The choice a person or couple makes is personal and fully acceptable. Each week the pastors provide a Connect Group Guide providing icebreaker and sermon oriented questions to help facilitate group discussion. The ice breaker questions tend to be light-hearted, allowing participants to become better acquainted. The sermon questions apply Biblical teachings to everyday life. For those needing childcare, nurseries are available. Coffee and cookies are nearby! Hebrews 1:24-25 (NIV) says; And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Connect Groups offer a great way to meet people, deepen your understanding of Sunday messages, address prayer needs, and socialize. If you're interested in meeting others, I strongly suggest you consider joining a Connect Group. A few words of caution however. Friendships may result.
