Lori Miller-Price Benevolence for November: South East Associated Ministries (SEAM) SEAM is an interfaith community through which local faith traditions relate to each other and foster the human growth and potential of residents within our community. Staff members work side-by-side with approximately 100 volunteers to provide services to residents living in zip codes and The services provided include: Food Back-to-School Supplies Financial Assistance for utilities, rent and medications Blood pressure screenings Partnership with the Winterhelp Utility Program Holiday programs that provide Thanksgiving baskets; Christmas stockings and Easter baskets for children; and our Hand Made in Love project that provides hand-made mittens, scarves and hats for the winter months. Did you know that there is an official St. Andrew s Day on November 30? St. Andrew is celebrated as the patron saint of fisherman. His day is one of the feast days celebrated in many faith traditions around the world, especially in fishing villages! Andrew was the first disciple called by Jesus. He was the brother of Simon Peter who was also one of the first disciples. The gospels tell us that Andrew was a fisherman at the Sea of Galilee and lived in Capernaum. Based upon the gospel of John, it has been concluded that Andrew was a conscientious Jew who had been baptized by John the Baptist and was looking eagerly for the arrival of the messiah. He was described as continually open to new light; he was pliable and teachable. When the Spirit broke upon him, he accepted it enthusiastically and wished others to share in it. (Interpreters Dictionary of the Bible, Volume I) Wow! Isn t that a great name for our church! We are named for a man who was described as open to new light, pliable and teachable. One who shared his faith enthusiastically As I write this, we just ended a wonderful weekend with Dr. Marcia McFee with us. She was warmly and enthusiastically received by folks from our church and the folks from the 6 other churches that we hosted! 2 HEARTBEAT Page 2 Pastor (continued from pg 1) If you think about it, much of what we want to do in worship is to embody our St. Andrew name to allow God s Spirit to fall upon us, to accept it enthusiastically and to share it with others! As Dr. McFee reminded us, worship is not about considering what we like or don t like, rather worship is building up the body of Christ for its work in the world through its encounter with the holy living God. As we work to do this in faithful ways together, let us help one another feel more connected to God through our worship and our living. Please pray for our church on November 30, on the feast day of St. Andrew! Dear God, We pray that we will be open to the light of your Spirit so that it may fall afresh on each one of us and on our congregation as a whole. May we seek to be more loving, more caring, more trusting, and more faithful with one another in this place called St. Andrew and in all places when we go forth from here into the world. Amen. Hand made with Love and Prayers for SEAM It s time again to pick up your knitting needles and crochet hooks to make hats, mittens, scarves, fingerless gloves and headbands for the SEAM families. As you are working on these items please say a prayer for those who are hungry, cold and homeless. From the Council President We are blessed to have members who volunteer countless hours to the church each week. Without this help, we would have to hire someone to do the work, resulting in a major hit to the budget. If you see something in our building or outsode that needs attention, please check with the appropriate team before you undertake any project. It may very well be the particular job is part of a project already in the works. We make this request in order to improve communication and not to discourage anyone from volunteering. You are important parts of St. Andrew UCC and we cannot do it without all of YOU! Coming Events! Margaret Wolke s 100 th Birthday is on November 3! Come help celebrate with her at Seneca Place on Dutchmans Lane at 12:00 on November 3. We will be having lunch with her too. Pastor Lori had already planned to be on vacation that day, so thanks to our laypeople for agreeing to host the meeting here! Please see Mary Wehr to choose yarn from the 224 skeins that have been donated for this cause. If you have a new pattern, please share. Many of you have already finished some items these can be placed inside the cupboard found in the hallway to Glassner Hall. Beginning November 1 st I will be taking the items to SEAM for their families. Lori didn't write this) From the Librarians Did you ever think about all the events that happen in November? As the weather gets cooler and the leaves continue to fall, many special things occur. Daylight savings time ends at 2 AM on Sunday, November 6 and Election Day occurs on Tuesday, November 8. On Thursday, November 24 we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. The Pilgrims and Indians celebrated a meal together after a rough winter when many passed away. This gathering began as a religious celebration. We remember it year after year with a Thanksgiving dinner. Thank You Very Much! Toward the end of the month, as a church, we will celebrate the Advent season beginning on November the 27 th. Our liturgical colors will change to purple (or blue). The lighting of candles becomes a special observance every Sunday in preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. Two adult books including We Rejoice in the Light by Sandy Dixon and Family Devotions for the Advent Season by James L Evans are available in the library. We encourage you to educate your family about these special observances. Come visit the library. And let s not forget the celebration of Saint Andrew on November 30 th. St. Andrew was called as the first disciple by Jesus. He was the brother of Simon Peter and his official holiday is celebrated in Scotland as he is their patron saint. The Librarians

Time: 7:00 p.m. Place: St. Andrew Gathering Area Leader: Terry Burden Our focus in our study will be the Old Testament and its importance in the development of the Christian faith. Why call our study Our Jewish Faith? Because the Christian faith is rooted in the heritage of Jesus Christ and his religion Judaism. We will look at how this works. Bring with you questions and personal points of interest. BOB: Bring your own Bibles. Refreshments and Laptop Coffee will be served. Free Health and Wellness Counseling KentuckyOne Health Partners Francis Center-3042 Hikes Lane A nurse and a medical social worker are on site twice per week for free consultations with individuals experiencing health needs or obstacles in finding resources to provide for their health situation. Referrals are made to the appropriate provider. In cases where an individual lacks insurance or financial resources, the case managers have access to programs where services can be obtained at little or no cost. The case managers are able to provide educational instruction and consultation for patients when appropriate. Office Hours: Tuesday 9-12 (Medical) For more information or to schedule an appointment call: SATURDAY MORNING WALKS Every week at 9 am. Let's get healthy together! We will meet and end at St Andrew. Open to all ages and physical conditions. We will plan to walk a mile together, but welcome those walking shorter or longer distances. Come rain or shine (we ll walk indoors if the weather is bad). Parish Health Ministry It's FLU SHOT TIME! Yes, believe it or not, it's time for that one second pinch that could possibly save your life. In the United States, Flu shots are recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older.the Flu can be a very serious illness, especially in young kids, adults over 65, people with other health problems, and pregnant women. Again, that is a large majority of our Parishioners. The Flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and your family and friends from the Flu. Health officials recommend people get their Flu shot in early Fall, preferably by the end of October. Flu activity usually peaks in January or February. It usually takes about 2 weeks for the Flu shot to get into your system and build up your immunity. You can go to your Doctor's office, favorite Pharmacy, and even the grocery (Little Clinic-Kroger) to get your Flu shot. So don't be a CHICKEN! Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will offer health screenings at St Andrew UCC on November 8. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take minutes to complete.
