1 THE WINDOW MAY, 2015 ANDERSON HILLS CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) Annual Congregational Meeting & Meal May 31st Immediately after worship Our Church, Our Future: An Evening of Pizza and Pondering Date: Friday, May 15 Time: 6:30 9:00 pm Place: Fellowship Hall Hosted By: Transition Team Who s Invited: YOU! Purpose: We want YOU to be involved as we all seek to understand God s plans for us! If you ve been wondering what the Transition Team has been up to, or even what the Transition Team is, this will be a great opportunity to find out more. If you haven t given it much thought but enjoy spending time with your church family, this evening is for you too! Who doesn t love pizza on a Friday night? We ll provide the food, beverages, and childcare (and perhaps a game!) all you need to do is participate! Please plan on attending this important all church gathering. A time of fellowship to enjoy a delicious carry-in luncheon and a time to take care of a few business items including: 1. Election of Officers and Board for the new church year and 2. Approving the Budget (Spending Plan) for the church year. Vacation Bible School "SonSpark Labs" Monday, June 15 - Friday, June 19 Each day will begin at AHCC at 9:00 a.m. and the church will be buzzing with activities involving experiments, innovation, creativity and all kinds of fun. Closing is at 12:00 noon each day and parents will be able to keep track of each day's activities with a daily newsletter. VBS is for children entering kindergarten through seventh grade. You may register students now; registration forms are on our web site: As always, the success of our program depends on our wonderful SECONDARY STORY HEADLINE volunteers. We need both adults and teen helpers; if you can help us that week please register on the volunteer form on our web site. Questions? Ask Susan Smith. 2 Page 2 From my heart to yours So much has happened in the life of the church since the last newsletter...god is amazing and since all of you are created in the image of God, you are AMAZING, too! Thank you for the faithfulness you show by your participation and hard work - by your questions and answers and by showing up when needed. The sermon series for right now is about giving - about God s generosity and trustworthiness. The series is about how we think about giving and what that has to do with our spiritual lives and health. Could we consider using different words about this part of our church life, to help us think differently than we have in the past? Instead of budget what about a spending plan that includes some flexibility because plans nearly always need to be adjusted. Instead of a pledge card how about emphasizing a commitment to give plan or just a giving plan. Crazy, I know but new words and a changed emphasis can sometimes help bring about new attitudes and new ways of thinking and behaving. Everyone understands that when we give to the church we help keep the lights on and pay the bills but how healing it would be if when we give we realize what we are really doing is giving to God. By our gifts we are thanking God for God s faithful provision and trusting God to provide what is needed in the future. Our thinking should reflect an attitude of abundance rather than one of scarcity. When it becomes apparent that something is needed for the advancing of God s kingdom (as lived out at AHCC) rather than hearing the usual, We don t have the money or the slightly better, Where is the money coming from why not say, This is good (this is important, this makes sense), how can we work this out (how can this be accomplished). It is through the working things out and moving through the difficult times that God s power is most apparent. If you believe that God has a purpose and plan for AHCC, then also believe that God is faithful to see that plan through to completion. During the first week of May you will receive a letter from myself and the Finance Team with a yellow Commitment (Pledge) Card in it. Please prayerfully consider how you will fill this out and then bring it back to church on May 10th to turn in during a special offering time. (If you will not be in church on May 10th you can mail your card in or leave your card in the church office.) As we give our all, the best we can, watch and see the wonders that our God will preform. Blessings, Rev. Nancy PENTECOST SUNDAY May 24th Help celebrate the Birthday of the church by bringing red flowers to decorate the sanctuary and wearing red to worship. Let s celebrate the amazing gift of God s Holy Spirit...our Comforter and Helper, Counselor and Advocate - the Spirit of Truth.
3 Page 3 Praise God for hearts that are being stirred! Graduate Recognition Sunday May 17 th AHCC will recognize students graduating from high school, college, graduate school, and professional schools. Please send your graduate s information to the office. Kim Kazee came forward April 19th accompanied by her brother Scott Shellabarger to re-affirm her faith and commitment to AHCC. Also on April 19th Joshua and Jeanna Haney along with their daughters, Anna, Elizabeth, Emma and Olivia came forward to re-affirm their faith and transfer their membership from Trenton Gracepointe Nazarene to AHCC. The purpose of the Pastor s Classes is to help our older children and youth learn about what it means to follow Jesus and to accept him as Savior and then, if they choose, to be baptized. By attending and participating in the classes they will have an opportunity to ask their own questions of faith and to build on what they have already learned. The classes will be held on Sundays from 9 AM - 10 AM on May 3, 17, 24, 31 and June 7. Please let me know of your child s or youth s desire to attend as well as any questions you may have. Rev. 5 Page 5 Landscaping Update The rose bushes at the curb near the mailboxes have been meticulously trimmed. Dead debris; street garbage; and leaves from the previous fall have been cleared away. The rose bushes will be treated with a systemic solution, which will protect them from harmful mites, insects, and fungal diseases. Red and white begonias will be planted around the marquee after Mother s Day. The gardens around the Parsonage have been cleared of dead debris and leaves. The rose bushes have been trimmed. The rose bushes, Azalea, and peonies have been treated with a systemic granule. The Azalea, roses, and boxwoods have also received an anti-fungal spray treatment. Perennials such as Salvia, Creeping Phlox, Forget Me Nots, Candytuft, and red and white Blackfoot daisies have been planted in the front garden. The left and right gardens near the entrance of the church have been cleared of dead debris and weeds. Pansies have been planted for color. The rose bush has been trimmed and is awaiting systemic treatment. All of the rose bushes along the Visitor Parking signs have been trimmed and are awaiting systemic treatment. The area has been weeded and more pond stones have been added. New hoses have been purchased to avoid wasting water. New nozzles and a new sprinkler have been donated. The gardens are in good order. The new focus is the Gazebo and the area around it. It is good to remember that action is the portal for ideas. Look for updates about the Gazebo area in the June Newsletter. Cindy Thomas Property Team Update, April, 2015: The Anderson Hills Christian Church Property Team includes the following members: Steve Brinker, Nancy Martin, Sean Riffle, Cindy Thomas, Greg VanDierendonck and John Heeney, Chair. Scott Shellabarger, Chair of the Administration Team has also been attending the meetings. At this time we are meeting once a month. Our main goal is to identify the needs for repair and upkeep of the property and grounds, set priorities and ask for volunteers to complete the projects. If the project is too big for a volunteer such as the parking lot, the Team will make recommendations that will include the cost of the project and who the Team recommends for completing the project. Our accomplishments to date are to recommend to the Administration Team to approve $2,000 from Memorial Funds that will be used to redecorate rooms in the old building. We also approved creating a team that has the authority to make all decisions on the painting and other needs in the rooms such as curtains or drapes and other items. Nancy Martin has the task of selecting three people to be on this team. The property team is using the pictorial poster that illustrated the identified areas of concern. Some of those items have been completed such as the room we are now calling the conference room and the craft room. Some of those not completed, the team has identified the month and task to be completed during the year such as when inspections of property need to be done. A couple of those items are when the air conditioners need to be checked and when all fire extinguishers and lights need to be checked. There are others and if anyone has a suggestion, please let one of the property team members know. The team welcomes any ideas or suggested projects so contact any of the property team members with your suggestions. John Heeney
6 Page 6 Hey Ladies, it's time to lace up those gym shoes and hit the pavement with the AHCC walking Club!! Our first walk will be Tuesday May 5th at 7:00pm. We will walk the Five Mile Trail for our first outing, meeting at the parking lot on Newtown Road next to the Heritage Church. We typically walk for an hour and we will meet at different trails/parks in the Anderson and Clermont County area each week. This year we will be discussing the previous Sunday sermon while we walk. This is a great way to get to know each other a little better while getting in some good exercise.
