3 Notes January 17, 2010 Pastor Phil Christiansen Whatever It Takes Hosea 2:2-23 Review Hosea s ministry occurred about 700 years before Jesus was born. Israel was flourishing economically to the point of affluenza. Israel s leaders foolishly tried to protect their interests and lifestyles by entering into agreements and alliances with Assyria. Israel was mingling God-worship with Baal worship. Israel was cheating on God her first love. Hosea was called to marry a prostitute named Gomer. Rightful Rejection (v 2-5) Gomer is not acting like and he cannot behave like her husband. Gomer is strutting around for other lovers. God will His love. They are not His kids - they re children of Baal. Response of Love (v 6-15) God s response. He begins by setting up. He s trying to block the theological connection between worshiping Baal and the rewards of blessing from Baal. God was going to pull Israel away from Baal in several ways First: Discredit Baal s (v 2:7).

4 : Demonstrate God s absolute power and authority over nature (v 2:9). He wants to show them that false gods have no power or ability to meet their needs. Third: God intends to Israel back into relationship (v 2:14). These are the lengths to which God will go to get your eyes off the lies and win you to Himself. A Fresh Start (v 16-23) There will be a complete of everything. His people won t even be able to utter the any more. I will betroth you to me forever I m going to to you. As always, God does the work. In so many ways, we are like Gomer like Israel chasing after everything we think will make us happy. But God won t have it! He wants us for Himself. New Adult Seminar Series: Sharing Jesus with Muslim Friends begins next Sunday, January 24 at 11a.m. in EDC 204. Pastor Roy Price will lead a discussion following featured videos from Christian scholars and former followers of Islam. Blood Drive: We are again partnering with the Marshall Blood Bank on Sunday, January 24 in the FLC from 9a.m.-1p.m. Reserve your spot for the blood drive at the Missions and Outreach table on the patio during all three services. Stop by the FLC on Sunday, January 24 from 9a.m. to 12p.m. for a delicious (and FREE) meal prepared and served by the youth group kids and leaders. While you're there, take some time to hop in a chair and donate blood at our blood drive! Women s Tea: Save the date! Our annual tea will be held on Saturday, May 1 from 10:30a.m. to 1:00p.m. Tickets are $13 and all women ages 8 to 108 are invited. We are also looking for table hosts. For the Kind-Hearted: Compassion Ministry is looking for male volunteers to reach out to other men in need. These volunteers are asked to encourage and pray over the phone when men in our church body are in the hospital. 7 Adult Ministry Special Guests: Two unique adult education opportunities are happening on Sunday, January 31 at 11a.m. For more information, please call the church office. The Role of Women in Islam: Dr. Cindi Strong of Simpson University will teach on this topic and answer questions. Dr. Strong earned her PhD in Islamic studies at Fuller Seminary. This will meet in EDC 204. Keith Johnson, co-author of the newly-released book, A Prayer to Our Father. Pastor Johnson will share insight into the Hebrew origins of the Lord s Prayer. He will show us how this beloved prayer relates to knowing more about Jesus in the first century and how it applies to you today! Meet in EDC Community Event: Keith Johnson, as mentioned above, will be speaking at Lakeside Church at The Block in Folsom, Friday, January 29 at 7:00p.m. A pastor and former chaplain to the Minnesota Vikings, Keith will be sharing his exciting journey of faith.
