1 News and Notes Belin Memorial United Methodist Church October 2016 FROM YOUR PRESIDENT.. This my favorite time of year. The weather is wonderful (I'm not counting Matthew). There are beautiful sunshiny days, and there is so much to do. Our BBQ and Bake Sale is just around the corner followed by Thanksgiving, and then our Ladies Luncheon. And then, yikes, it's Christmas! I hope you have set aside time to help and to attend all of these events. Not only will you experience lots of fun and great fellowship, you will benefit by giving to those in need. We are so blessed here at Belin. Let's play it forward. Blessings to all, Sue ANNUAL BAR-B-QUE AND FALL FESTIVAL November 5, 9:00 AM This annual church-wide event raises money for the church s outreach fund used to help local residents. The Bake Sale is sponsored by the UMW, but all church members contribute baked goods to be sold. Items should be delivered to the Family Life Center between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Friday, November 4. It s time to get out our favorite recipes and BAKE! Miracle Seekers Circle will head up the November 4 preparation and pricing of treats to be sold, although all ladies are welcome to help. Contact Iva Coker ( ) if you would like to help package items for sale. Frances Wilson Circle will coordinate sales. Contact Sue Carreiro ( ) if you would like to assist in sales on November 5. 1

2 A COMMUNITY OF READERS BELIN MEMORIAL UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Harvest time is upon us. The season of feasting and gift giving is just one calendar page away. As we plan menus for holiday meals and start our lists of who will receive greeting cards and gifts, we are given an opportunity to reflect on how we are making a difference in the lives of others. Family members, friends, neighbors, and strangers will become the recipients of our holiday cheer and generosity. The holiday weeks also give us all an opportunity to slow down our daily routines so that we may refresh our soul and observe the wonders of this upcoming holy season. Enjoy! HERE ARE TWO BOOKS THAT MAY HELP YOU CHANGE PERSPECTIVE OF EVERYDAY LIFE YOU COME CLOSER TO GOD. (Nurture the Community) Slowing Time Seeing the Sacred Outside Your Kitchen Door by Barbara Mahany Author Mahany s book narrates the rewards we can experience if only we pay attention to what each season of the year brings to us both seen and unseen. The book provides ways to delight in moments of each season. One way is to browse a Count-Your- Blessings Calendar each season. A second way is to read over the recipe box page filled with savory foods to cook and then relish. After reading this book gaze out through a window or open the kitchen door slowly. As you observe the seasons arrive and pass spiritual wonders will be revealed to you. Just Look and Enjoy! (Social Action) The Power of Half - One Family s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back by Kevin Salwen and Hannah Salwen Kevin and his family, including his teenage daughter Hannah, take steps to think again about the stuff they have accumulated and the lives they lead as a family within an upper income bracket. The Salwen family members devise a plan starting with an examination of their individual life values. The result of their reflections and discussions is a major life change. They decide to live smaller so they may be continuously generous to those in need. The book The Power of Half is a chronicle of one family s search for bold ways to give generously. The authors also share with us the joy of togetherness experienced when a family is focused on others and not ownership of things. 2

3 MISSIONARY OF THE MONTH Serving At: Sustainable Agriculture and Development Program for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Location: Ghana, Africa Mozart Makafui Adevu Mozart is a United Methodist missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries serving as the Africa regional coordinator for the Sustainable Agriculture and Development Program for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). He is based in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. Mr. Adevu s program focuses on the training of communities for transformation, including assessment of needs and assets, and training in such areas as integrated crop and pest management, nutrition improvement using moringa and soybeans; beekeeping that produces pure, hygienic honey; livestock-and poverty-improvement practices, and agroforestry to protect the environment and encourage the growing of trees that produce food and income. One of the responsibilities of UMW units is to pray for and recognize one of our world-wide missionaries at each meeting. The purpose of the information in each News and Notes is to give an opportunity for circle leaders and members to have information about a specific missionary so that he or she may be included in prayer. 4 Belin United Methodist Women Board Meeting September 28, 2016 The UMW Board met in the Family Life Center at 1:30 PM. In attendance: Sue Walters, president; Susan Malachefski, vice president; Dottie Burnham, treasurer; Jo Bendick, secretary; Sue Carreiro and Nancy Heintz, Frances Wilson Circle chairs; Iva Coker, Miracle Seekers Circle chair; Peg Otterberg, Grace Circle chair; Betty Mar Little, newsletter chair. Iva Coker opened our meeting with a devotional reading from Proverbs 25:11, Proverbs 1:23, and Psalms 14:3; entitled Apples of Gold... A word spoken at the right time is like gold. She also brought us a dish of delicious apples to share. Secretary s Report Minutes were read and approved from the last month s meeting. Treasure s Report Dottie distributed a copy of the treasure s report to those in attendance. Circles Reports Iva reported that the Miracle Seekers Circle gave shampoo and conditioner to Mimi s House of Hope; and president Sue Walters will be at the home of Barbara Horton for their next Circle meeting. She also reported that Michelle told her of a place in Conway called Fostering Hope is a resource for foster children to get clothes for free. Sue Carreiro reported that Frances Wilson Circle made donations to Mimi s House of Hope and Eight Days of Hope, and will again be collecting items for shoe boxes for the Brown s Ferry School. Peg Otterberg reported that Asbury Hills Methodist Camp costs $450 a week and that they will give a $500 scholarship to be used for youth from our church to attend. They also made donations of $250 to Killingworth and $500 to a coastal mentoring program. Old Business UMW annual meeting at Trinity Methodist Church in Bennettsville is October 8; cost is $13. Annual State Conference will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville October New Business The next Book Chat is October 13, at 4:00 PM in the Family Life Center. We will continue to sell the shelf sitters at the Bar-B-Q November 5. This year s BBQ tickets will be $9 each. Iva Coker will be in charge of receiving baked goods Friday the 4th from 9:00 AM 3:00 PM. A sign-up sheet for Saturday s bake sale workers will be available - from 9:00 AM 4:00 PM. Diane Lewis will be in charge of next year s Strove Tuesday s pancake dinner on February 28. The board also discussed the benefits of changing the date of the annual Christmas luncheon from the first Saturday in December. More discussion to come. 5 CIRCLE NOTES FRANCES WILSON CIRCLE will be in charge of selling baked goods at Belin s annual BBQ on November 5. All bake good donations are greatly appreciated, and may be brought to the FLC on Friday the 4th. Our next meeting is November 14 at 10:00 AM, and we will be assembling and wrapping shoe boxes for 25 Special Ed children at Brown s Ferry School with gifts donated by Circle members. Afterwards, we will have a dump soup luncheon where everyone brings a can of cream based or tomato based soup. Some of the ladies will be preparing the soup while others wrap boxes. If you are close by the FLC that Monday, drop by and we will gladly share a cup of soup with you. The gift boxes will be delivered to the children in December. For anyone who may be interested in going and meeting these great kids, we welcome you to join us and have lunch with us after we leave the school. Our Circle will provide cookies for the meal Belin will be providing for the homeless on Sunday afternoon November 20. Cookie donations may be brought to the FLC on Friday the 18th or Sunday 20th by 9:00 AM, and left in the FLC kitchen. This is the time of the year when we start collecting pledges for Please bring your pledge cards to the meeting either in November or December. Circle co-leaders: Sue Carreiro ( ) and Nancy Heintz ( ) GRACE CIRCLE will meet on Monday, November 7 at the home of Betsy Richardson. We will be preparing baked goods for the Annual BBQ. We will also be helping with the silent auction and cleaning up after the event. Circle leader: Peg Otterberg ( ) MIRACLE SEEKERS met on October 4 at the home of Barbara Horton. Pat Cook agreed to assume the duties of the secretary's position from Phyllis Caudell who is retiring after many years of faithful service. Our guest speaker, Sue Walters, UMW president, gave a thorough explanation of the UMW budget as to where our pledge money goes. Pledge cards will be collected in January. Circle members were asked to help price baked goods for the BBQ and bazaar on Friday, November 4 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Mimi from Mimi's House of Hope will be the guest speaker at next month's meeting in the FLC at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, November 1. New study books, The Girl's Still Got It were distributed to Circle members. Circle leader: Iva Coker ( ) 2016 CALENDAR OF EVENTS November 5... BBQ, Bazaar, and Bake Sale, FLC December 3... UMW Annual Christmas Luncheon, Kimbel s Restaurant, Wachesaw Plantation CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON DECEMBER 3, :30 AM Plans are complete for the UMW annual Christmas luncheon. This year s event will be held at Kimbel s Restaurant in Wachesaw Plantation. All women of the church are invited to this celebration. Attendees can choose between two entrees: sliced flank steak or grilled salmon. Registration forms will be available soon and on line registration will be available at belinumc.org. Invite friends to come to enjoy fellowship, good food, and a beautiful setting. 5
