1 ACT PARISH MURDOCK-DEGRAFF CLUSTER NEWSLETTER BETHESDA AND BUFFALO LAKE OF GRACE CHURCHES MARCH 2017 PASTOR DAN CROONQUIST, PASTOR MICHELLE KLEENE PASTOR DAN: (CELL); OFFICE: ; HOME: PASTOR MICHELLE: (CELL); OFFICE: ; HOME: ACT WEBSITE: ACT ALSO HAS FACEBOOK FROM PASTOR DAN... Dear Friends, While the task of preparing to move is not one of the things most of us look forward to in life, it does provide some benefits. One of the good things about moving is that it forces us to sift through all of the stuff that many of us tend to keep and hang on to over the years. It is amazing how so many items and objects can accumulate in a household over time. It s almost as if they are able to reproduce on their own. Such moments call for hard-hearted efficiency. Broken items which we vowed to fix pretty soon, things we keep because we might just need them or use them one day, boxes of old papers and memorabilia, clothes not worn in years, old toys and obsolete knickknacks. All of these things find their way to a garage sale, thrift store, or the dumpster. As difficult as this sorting and cleaning project can be for some of us, when complete it results in our being able to walk through one s basement or garage and not be overwhelmed with junk. All of the extra baggage from the past takes up valuable space. It gets in the way of life in the present. It prevents us from moving forward. For us, Lent is that time of the year to not only get rid of the extra clutter in our homes, but also to get rid of the extra baggage in our lives. It is a time of cleansing for our souls. We are able to strip away all of the junk that we carry with us: sins, guilt, shame, bad habits, negative attitudes, selfish ways, and self-destructive behavior. We are called to take a good look at all of these things, and then simply throw them away. Throw them into the bottomless bin of God s forgiveness. / continued on page 3 Pastor Dan 1 & 3 Bethesda announcements; library news Bethesda church Missions of the month; March Preaching schedule ACT Parish announcements and Activities 2 & & 6

3 From the library... For those who missed the ACT evening activity in February when we watched the one-hour special Rick Steves Luther and the Reformation the DVD is now in the media section (Section 16) of the library. Five hundred years ago, Martin Luther kicked off the Reformation, which ultimately split Western European Christianity in two: Catholic and Protestant. In this public television special filmed on location in Germany and in Rome Rick Steves traces the dramatic events of this grassroots movement that changed history. (find in Section 16,St) PAGE 3 Thank you to the library committee who put on the February fund raiser for the library. And, thank you to those who donated to the library. Donations from the fundraiser plus the February coffee dollars will go to the purchase of new books/media. Another DVD The Life of Apostle Peter with Rick Steves is available in the media section. Peter is a guy who has fish scales on his hands, who would up being handed the scales of ecclesial justice by Jesus. The Apostle Peter was an eyewitness to the three-year public ministry of Jesus, his death and most importantly for Christians his resurrection. Join public television travel host and guide book author Rick Steves as e recounts the story of the Apostle Peter from his early days as a fisherman, through his three-year adventure with Jesus to the tumultuous events surround Jesus death and resurrection. (find in Section 16,Mo) The word 'March' comes from the Roman 'Martius'. This was originally the first month of the Roman calendar and was named after Mars, the god of war. March was the beginning of our calendar year. We changed to the 'New Style' or 'Gregorian calendar in 1752, and it is only since then when we the year began on 1st January. The Anglo-Saxons called the month Hlyd monath which means Stormy month, or Hraed monath which means Rugged month. All through Lent the traditional games played are marbles and skipping. The games were stopped on the stroke of twelve noon on Good Friday, which in some places was called Marble Day or Long Rope Day. The game of marbles has been played for hundreds of years and some historians say that it might have been started by rolling eggs. In the past, round stones, hazelnuts, round balls of baked clay and even cherry stones have been used." /Pastor Dan continued from page 1... Many of us dream of a time when we can live our lives without being overwhelmed with the junk that we carry with us. Well, that time is near. It comes at Easter. It comes each and every Sunday when we hear the words of absolution. It comes each day when God wipes the slate clean and allows us to have a fresh start. It comes to us because of the great love that God has for us; a love made known to us in God s only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, we are set free from all that would hinder, burden, and bind us. Thanks be to God for the house cleaning that the first Lent and Easter allows, as well as each one that has come after. During this Lenten season, may you rid yourselves of all of the things that are holding you back, keeping you stuck, and preventing you from having life, health, wholeness and wellness. Blessings on your Lenten journey, Pastor Dan
4 Mission of the Month for March Each month a list of giving opportunities in the parish will be included in the newsletter. Monetary donations are always welcome as well. PAGE 4 1. Swift County Food Shelf. The March Food Drive Campaign is just around the corner. This year s theme invites us to End Hunger. This invitation gives us the chance to make a difference in our county by donating either dollars or pounds of food. The Food Shelf box is next to the elector in the entry. There will also be an envelope in the box so if you wish to give money, please put it in the envelope. 100% of the proceeds raised by product, food, cash or check goes back to the people in Swift County. 2. KMS Backpack program. We will continue participating in the KMS backpack program through the school year. Please leave your donations in the KMS Backpack box. If you need a list of requested food items, please ask Jan for a copy of it. 3. Soles4Souls shoe drive. The Kerkhoven Lion s Club is collecting any size or type of clean used shoes The shoes go to people in need, whether there has been a natural disaster, or it's a case of poverty. This program helps people throughout the world. A container for the collection of shoes is in the Narthex. Romans 12:8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.
