2 Dear members and friends of St. John s: My mother and father really did Easter at our house. That meant Easter baskets for my sister and me. I even ate chocolate back then. It also meant having new outfits and taking a family picture by the big willow tree in our front yard. For their grandchildren it meant doing the decorating, just like at Christmas. My children still talk about the Easter egg trees and the big inflatable bunnies that seemed to multiply every year. Most importantly, my parents did Easter by going to church. After having boiled eggs for breakfast, colored and decorated the night before, we went to Mass in a big Buick Electra. Mom and dad would attend services at whatever church I happened to be serving, even if meant driving to Southwestern Wisconsin or Northeastern Pennsylvania. However you do Easter this year, I hope your plans include coming home to St. John s for the sunrise service at 7 AM, the late service at 10:30 AM and for breakfast in-between. We won t promise big bunnies but there may be deer in attendance. Word gets around when we worship in the parking lot. And, there will be Easter eggs, not hanging on trees, but strategically hidden for the kids to find. Let s make this the year that the sunrise reveals a full parking lot and later, an even fuller sanctuary. Let s make this the year we simply can t miss our amazing and awesome choir sing All those Alleluias - that s the name of my Easter Sunday sermon, by the way.. Instead of bemoaning and wringing our hands that people don t go to church like they used to, let s make this the year that we extend a hand and invite someone to church. WORSHIPPING OUR RISEN SAVIOR IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF EASTER SUNDAY! It is our way of announcing what the angels announced to the women at Jesus empty tomb: He is not here. He has risen, just as he said. A good way to make this announcement is by saying or singing the lyrics to He Lives! We serve a Risen Savior, he s in the world today, we know that he is living, whatever others say. We see his hand of mercy, we hear his voice of cheer; and just the time we need him, he s always near. He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today, he walks with me and talks with me along life s narrow way. He lives, he lives, salvation to impart! You ask me how I know he lives? Here s what it says: Although mouse mix will provide a good basic diet mice also enjoy fruit and vegetables. That means we can eat apples (seedless), bananas, grapes, kiwi and mango (in small amounts and introduced gradually). You can put fruit in my Easter basket, and Chester s too! You can also put in Cheetos. The Rev likes fruit. Some nice person from the church must have known this cause they put a fruitcake on his desk. It was baked by the monks of the Abbey at Gethsemani. He talked about that place in one of his sermons. Chester and me want to know WHO BROUGHT THE FRUITCAKE? You need to be properly thanked. Then you need to remind the Rev to share and share alike.

4 A Living Will is defined as a written statement detailing a person s desires regarding their medical treatment in circumstances in which they are no longer able to express informed consent, especially an advance directive On Sunday, April 7th, Chaplain Jeffrey L. Smith, from Licking Memorial Hospital, will be at St. John s to preach at both services. After the 10:30 service, he will make a presentation on Living Wills in the Meeting Room. 5 Lenten Series April 6:30 in the Meeting Room Imagine Redemption - prayer and discussion Prayer Practice: Walking Toward God: The Journey Made Visible April 6:30 in the Meeting Room Imagine Going Home - prayer and discussion Prayer Practice: Praying in Nature: Contemplation and Creation Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, is pleased to offer a preventive health event at St John's United Church of Christ on 4/25/2019. The service lasts about ½ hour. Then we will attend the luncheon downstairs together. The cost for the lunch is $7. Close parking is at a premium, so come early. Our May meeting will be our 147 th Anniversary. Plan now to come to our traditional potluck salad luncheon on Wednesday, May 1, at noon in the Fellowship Room.

6 NEWS FROM CHURCH COUNCIL Church Council was not able to meet for the March 19 th meeting due to a lack of a quorum present. However, here are the Committee Reports for March. Pastor s Report: Rev. Mark Katrick The South Newark Civic Association will use St. John s as their base for the annual Neighborhood Clean-Up on Saturday, April 6, from 8:30 to 1. Chaplain Jeff Smith will preach on Sunday, April 7 at both services, and will present a program on Living Wills in Hermann Hall after the 10:30 service. Christian Education Committee: Elaine Gard The Peace Pole is here and will be dedicated on Sunday, May 19. Youth will serve an Easter Breakfast on Easter Sunday, April 21, from 7:45 to 9:45. Youth Sunday will be April 28, with an overnight the night before. The Mission Trip to Kentucky is scheduled for June Vacation Bible School is scheduled for June 24-28, 9-11:30. Church and Ministry: Gary Kinser Altar Guild Chair for April Sandy Johnson South End clean up with be April 6th. Jeff Smith will preach on April 7; afterward will make a presentation on Living Wills in Hermann Hall. Maundy Thursday brings THE PORTRAYAL, 8:00 P.M., Thursday, April 18 On Good Friday, April 19, there will be an Observance at the Highwater Church from 12 to 3 p.m. Finance and Stewardship: Bill McInturf A distribution from the Emerson Miller estate is coming this month. Some money will go to the estate fund to cover monthly transfers to the general fund, and some goes into the Property Maintenance fund for cash on hand. Income has been greater than expected so far, probably due to more members giving quarterly or annually. So, we currently have a surplus of money, but expect that to dwindle by mid-year. Mission and Outreach: Owen Lee $250 given to Y Healthy Kid s Network to provide nutritious and easy to prepare foods for 2 children for a year. $250 given to New Tribes Mission in Florida for the Holloway Car Repair Group. Music Committee: Relna Cornell Adult Bells will play for Easter Sunday. Extra special music is being planned by Todd Baldosser for Holy Week and Easter. Property Committee: Tom Lawyer New thermostats with locked covers have been installed in an effort to control temperatures in the Church. A new Christian Flag has been ordered. The Peace Pole will be installed when the weather permits. Church Council is working with three (3) vacant seats this year. Sometimes it is hard to have a quorum when there are three missing to begin with. We need people who are willing to share in the workings of St. John s to step up and fill these vacancies. 7 I Can Only Imagine will be our Lenten Bible study this year at 6:30pm on March 20, 27, and April 3, 10. This study is based on the movie and song of the same name. Join us for a study and discussion in the meeting room. April 21 Youth Sponsored Easter Breakfast. Join us for breakfast prepared by our Youth. We will be serving from 7:45am to 9:45am. Then enjoy fellowship time until 10:15. April Youth Overnight and Youth Sunday. Don t miss the Youth will present worship service focused on God s promises and how we can SHINE in those promises. June 9 15 St. John s Mission trip to Big Creek Missions in Bear Branch, KY. Any Youth or adult interesetd in participating in this years mission trip, see Julie Kroah for more details.
