1 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Fourth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2009 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Every year, on the fourth Sunday of Easter, the lectionary passages for the day include Psalm 23 and a gospel account that emphasizes Jesus as the good shepherd. The fourth Sunday in Eastertide is therefore often designated as Good Shepherd Sunday. Sheep are routinely considered to be silly, stubborn animals, and the shepherd comes to symbolize the loving care and attentiveness towards what would otherwise be naturally unloveable. In both the Old and New Testaments, God is frequently identified as the devoted shepherd to his people.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will also be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Berryman as our guest preacher. The Rev. Dr. Berryman was educated at Kansas University (B.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div., D.Min.), Tulsa University School of Law (J.D.), and studied Montessori education in Bergamo, Italy. He is the founder of Godly Play and currently serves as Senior Fellow at the Center for the Theology of Childhood, which is now part of the Godly Play Foundation. He was the Executive Director of the Center from and from was Canon Educator at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston. From he worked at The Institute of Religion, Baylor College of Medicine (Clinical Faculty), Texas Children s Hospital (as a consultant to the Consultation and Liaison Service), and on a team researching the families of suicidal children at the Houston Child Guidance Center. He has wide experience in education and has published many books and articles. He has presented his lectures and workshops worldwide, and people throughout the world use his curriculum, particularly in the education of children. AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT WORSHIP NEXT SUNDAY Sunday, May 10, is Duke s graduation weekend, and the Chapel will not be worshipping at its regular 11:00 a.m. time. Instead, the worship service will be at 5:00 p.m. The Rev. Michael Page of Antioch Baptist Church in Durham will be preaching.

6 CHAPEL ANNOUNCEMENTS TODAY S FLOWERS The flowers for today s worship service were provided by the Elizabeth Lucina Gotham Fund, in honor of Mary Semans former classmates: Ann Louise Reist Dunlap, Maxine Chambers Egert, Betty Pyle Baldwin, and Carolina Breedlove Reid. TODAY S OFFERING All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used for the May Mission of the Month, Our Children s Place (OCP). OCP is a planned residential facility that allows infants and preschoolers to live with their mothers while women who are incarcerated for nonviolent offenses serve out their prison term. The women will receive treatment and services to support their successful parenting and reentry into the community, while the children receive quality child care and developmental services. OCP plans to open its doors in Butner, NC, in 2010, phasing in with up to 20 children and 10 women, with the capacity to service up to 40 children and 20 women. TODAY S GUEST HARPIST Nikki Chang is a biology major from West Linn, Oregon, who has just completed her third year at Duke. She has studied harp for thirteen years, and currently studies under Laura Byrne. She is also a CPR instructor with Duke Red Cross, and she plays with the Duke Symphony Orchestra and the Duke Chamber Players. SUMMER CHOIR Duke Chapel welcomes singers to its Summer Choir that assists in leading worship from June to August; the choir is under the direction of Dr. Allan Friedman. Regular rehearsals are on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. Call for details. VISITING THE CHAPEL The Chapel often has weddings booked on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons, especially during the summer months. If a wedding is taking place, visitors will not be permitted inside. Before visiting on a weekend, please call to learn when the Chapel will be open to the public.
