1 Service of Worship Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany February 16, 2014 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God For Israel in the Old Testament and for Jews today, God s gift of the law is not for their punishment or restriction but for their flourishing and blessing. God desires a response of participation and obedience. In Deuteronomy, God lays the law before his people with choices of life and blessing, death and adversity, with a plea that his people choose life. Psalm 119 is often known as a love song to the law. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus renews Israel s understanding of the law. It is not just that misguided actions (murder and adultery) are harmful; the thoughts behind the actions (anger and lust) are just as damaging to the people of God.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. 6 About Today s Guest Preacher Today we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Lauren Winner as our guest preacher. Dr. Winner is Assistant Professor of Christian Spirituality at Duke Divinity School and is the author of numerous books, including Girl Meets God, Mudhouse Sabbath, and Still: Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis. Dr. Winner has appeared on PBS s Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and has served as a commentator on NPR s All Things Considered. She has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture, and Christianity Today, and her essays have been included in several volumes of The Best Christian Writing. Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers The flowers for the worship service today are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used for the Chapel Development Fund. The Chapel s current focus is to upgrade the Chapel cameras and video capabilities to digital and high definition in order to better serve the thousands of worshippers locally, in Duke Hospital, and around the globe who tune in weekly. The Apostles Creed Duke Chapel has made the decision to return to the traditional version of the Apostles Creed, which includes the statement Jesus descended into hell. This return is motivated out of the pastoral and theological conviction that this line of the creed forcefully reminds the Church that Christ s presence goes with us, even to the darkest and most tortured parts of our lives. Even hell is not beyond the bounds of Christ s presence, grace, and redemption. To quote the apostle Paul in Romans 8:38, For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, or things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
