1 Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Second Sunday after Pentecost June 10, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The church is a place of invisible hope. In Paul s second letter to the church in Corinth, he speaks to the the ways God transforms and renews suffering and affliction. He encourages the church not to lose heart because it is being renewed day by day, and its people are being prepared for eternal friendship with God. In Mark s gospel lesson, Jesus redefines traditional family by arguing that family is not defined by biology but by those who are participating in the life of God.
2 The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Gathering Carillon Organ Prelude Toccata in F Major, BuxWV 156 Dieterich Buxtehude (c ) Greeting and Announcements *Processional Hymn 132 All My Hope Is Firmly Grounded michael *Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (in unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) God of truth, as we hear your word in our midst, inspire us to keep your law of love and to walk in ways of wisdom, that we may find true life in Jesus Christ your Son. Amen. First Lesson 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 (NT page 170 in the pew Bible) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. To all, life thou givest to both great and small; In all life thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish, but nought changeth thee. Great Father of Glory, pure Father of Light, Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; All laud we would render: O help us to see Tis only the splendor of light hideth thee. Amen. *Doxology Eric H. Thiman ( ) lasst uns erfreuen Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Thanksgiving and Communion This morning we give thanks for the employees of Duke Financial Services. We celebrate the many ways they manage the complex financial life of the university. A representative brings a travel and reimbursement form to the altar.
4 In Durham, we remember the prophetic witness of the Church. The ushers bring forward an image of Martin Luther King, Jr. *The Great Thanksgiving (Musical setting A, found on page 17 in the hymnal.) *The Lord s Prayer (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) Sharing of the Bread and Wine All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of thee, That by caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be. Alleluia! Alleluia! 6 About Today s Guest Preacher Today we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. David Stubbs as our guest preacher. Dr. Stubbs is Professor of Ethics and Theology at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) who received his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. from Duke University. His scholarship has focused on the concept of participation in Christ and sanctification in the modern Reformed tradition. He also seeks to make links among contemporary theology, the early Church, and the Jewish roots of Christianity in order better to understand both Christ and the life and worship of the Church. Dr. Stubbs recently published a theological commentary on the book of Numbers, and he is currently working on a project exploring the influence of Israelite worship on the Lord s Supper. He is active in the work of the Presbyterian Church at both the local and national levels. Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Today s flowers are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to support human service organizations in the greater Durham area.
