1 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Third Sunday after the Epiphany January 21, 2007 Eleven o clock in the Morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Photo by Mark Manring What does it mean to be the people of God? The scripture lessons this morning seek to answer that question. In Nehemiah, Ezra publicly reads the words of the law, and the people respond by weeping at the demand. However, Ezra and Nehemiah comfort the crowd by saying the day is holy and joyous for God s people, implying that the law is a gift, not a burden. In Luke, Jesus quotes Isaiah and speaks to the liberating nature of God s action in the world a vision of jubilee where sight is recovered, and those captive are released. In I Corinthians, Paul encourages followers of Christ to appreciate their different gifts and pursue harmony in being the body of Christ for the world. The topic of the sermon today is what it means to live as the body of Christ and the image above represents the body of Christ at worship in Duke Chapel

3 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel, located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a Service of Healing will be held in the Memorial Chapel. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness with anointing and laying on of hands. Representatives bring a stethoscope and white coat to the altar. THURSDAY VESPERS Choral Vespers will be held on Thursday, January 25, at 5:15 p.m. Vespers is a thirtyminute candlelight service of worship with scripture readings, prayers, and sacred music, and is held in the intimate setting of the Chancel. The Vespers Ensemble is a select group of singers who specialize in Renaissance and 20th-century motets.
