The oak survived the storm. Photo by Katie Robillard. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? This poignant question from Isaiah is especially provocative in a culture of rampant consumerism. The passage in Isaiah paints a vision of feasting, where hunger and thirst are satisfied abundantly by being in the presence of God. Fasting during Lent provides the opportunity to stand in solidarity with those for whom daily bread is a daily struggle, while also reminding us of that for which we truly hunger Christ Jesus. As we celebrate Holy Communion this morning, we feast on the presence of God among us. Today's preacher, Bishop Hutchinson, has been a key leader for the United Methodist Church along the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The congregation sings the responses.) *THE LORD S PRAYER (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) SHARING OF THE BREAD AND WINE All those who have become members of Christ's body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. He is a native of New Mexico and spent most of his pastoral career serving churches there prior to his election as bishop in Bishop Hutchinson attended the University of Oklahoma and Duke Divinity School, and he has honorary doctorates from McMurray University and Centenary College. He is active in numerous regional and national boards of the United Methodist Church, with a particular passion for helping people to discern their vocation, both in secular fields and in ordained ministry. To this end, he chaired several Exploration events (designed for youth considering ordained ministry) and he also created the Discerner s Academy, which has proven a successful tool for vocational discernment in the Louisiana region. Bishop Hutchinson has a deep commitment to the spiritual formation of clergy and laity as a way to nurture the flourishing of the Church. He is married to Kay Aitken Hutchinson and has two adult sons.

7 CHAPEL ANNOUNCEMENTS TODAY S GUEST CHOIR The North Carolina Youth Chorus of Asheboro is a non-profit community children's choir from Randolph County. This is an auditioned choir of children ages The choir performs all over North Carolina and takes one National tour a year. The North Carolina Youth Chorus of Asheboro is dedicated to the musical enrichment of youth by building character through music while striving for the highest level of musical excellence. UPCOMING DEAN S DIALOGUE The next Dean s Dialogue will be held on March 19, at 12:20 p.m. and will feature Dean Wells and Dean William H. Schlesinger of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences. The location will be Room 0012 of the Westbrook Building in the Duke Divinity School. SUNDAY NIGHT WORSHIP Sunday Night Worship will not be held on March 11 and 18 because of Duke s spring break. Sunday Night Worship will resume on March 25. WEEKDAY WORSHIP Weekday worship, including Morning Prayer, Communion/Healing, and Choral Vespers, are suspended during the week of March 12, while the University is on Spring Break. Weekday worship will resume the week of March 19. On March 18, Dean Wells will lead the discussion on Pilate s wife. The location will be Room 0012 of the Westbrook Building at 9:45 a.m. CROP WALK The Durham area CROP Walk begins and ends at the Chapel on April 1 at 2:30 p.m. The purpose of the walk is to raise money for local hunger-fighting agencies as well as international relief and development aid. An information table will be available outside today after worship with information on how to participate by walking or giving a donation.
