1 Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Fourth Sunday of Easter April 29, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God A stone sheepfold. Every year, on the fourth Sunday of Easter, the lectionary passages for the day include a gospel account that emphasizes Jesus as the good shepherd. The fourth Sunday in Eastertide is therefore often designated as Good Shepherd Sunday. In both the Old and New Testaments, God is frequently identified as a faithful shepherd to his people. This Sunday is a fitting time to reflect on Jesus as one who knows and loves his flock with persistence and devotion.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. Duke Chapel will not be holding worship services that morning. The Congregation at Duke Chapel will be joining with Antioch Baptist Church in Durham for their 10:00 a.m. worship service, and the whole Duke Chapel community is invited to join them. Antioch is located at 1415 Holloway Street. Wells Endowment for Student Ministry The Chapel is raising funds for an Endowment for Student Ministry to honor Dean Sam Wells and the Rev. Dr. Jo Wells. The endowment will continue Dean Wells vision for growth and maturity of Duke Chapel s student ministry, currently called PathWays. This ecumenical ministry provides opportunities for students to hear and respond to God s call for their lives on campus, in Durham and beyond, through study, counsel, service, and community. 6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers The flowers for today s worship service are given in memory of Senator Terry Sanford, the former Governor of North Carolina and former President of Duke University, by the Terry Sanford Chapel Flowers Fund. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to underwrite the costs for undergraduate students going on the Chapel s Spring Break mission trips. Duke Chapel PathWays provides mission trip opportunities for students who are interested in spending their spring break in service and reflection. Most recently, Chapel staff led student trips to Costa Rica, Honduras, and New Mexico. Today s Guest Choir The Gate City Young Singers is a community chorus in Greensboro, NC. It is comprised of boys and girls from public, private, and home schools. The Gate City Young Singers is committed to the highest level of performing excellence through choral music. May 6 Goodbye to Dean Wells May 6, 2012, will be Dean Sam Wells final Sunday at Duke Chapel before leaving to become Vicar at St. Martin-in-the- Fields in London. The 11:00 a.m. worship service will include a celebration of his contribution to the life and ministry of the Chapel, Duke, and Durham. A free lunch on the Chapel quad for the first 1500 people will follow the service, with an entertaining afternoon program back in the Chapel from 1:15-2:30 p.m. New Event and Wedding Coordinator Meredith Hawley, who has been with the Chapel for six years, first as Staff Assistant to Chapel music and more recently as the Event and Wedding Coordinator, is leaving the Chapel at the end of this month to become the lead therapeutic assistant at Veritas Collaborative, a new specialty behavioral health hospital focusing on the treatment of young people with eating disorders. Meredith has meant a great deal to the Chapel community over the years, and we wish her the best in this next stage of her journey. She will be replaced by Sara Blaine, a 2009 graduate of Duke Divinity School who has worked for the past two years as a publisher s representative in the higher education division of Oxford University Press. Sara will assume her position at the Chapel on May 10. Katelyn Scott Today marks the last Sunday for Katelyn Scott, the Chapel s Divinity School worship intern. Katelyn has assisted with the Chapel s weekly services with a great deal of care and attention. She is graduating from the Divinity School, and will be moving to the west coast with her husband, Trevor, where she will serve as a hospital chaplain. 7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Adult Forum On Sunday, May 6, Congregation member Lois Oliver (who is also the Chapel s head docent) will lead the forum in a presentation called Seeing the Chapel in a New Way. The forum will be held in Room 0012 of the Westbrook Building of the Divinity School at 9:45 a.m. Congregation Goodbye to Wells Family The Congregation is planning a southern-style goodbye for Dean Sam Wells and his family at the Piney Wood Park Picnic Shelter on Saturday, May 5, at 4:00 p.m., rain or shine. Please bring a side dish or dessert, a photo of you or your family for a memory book, and, if you would like, equipment to play games on the adjoining field. We are putting together a CD of photos of the Wells family at Congregation events over the years, and any photos (present or past) that you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. Children s Ministry Godly Play meets each Sunday at 9:45 a.m. Children entering third grade or younger will meet in the crypt. Director of Community Ministry We are pleased to announce that the Rev. Bruce Puckett has accepted an invitation to join the Duke Chapel staff on July 1 as the Director of Community Ministry (DCM). The DCM is the Chapel s principal interface with Durham, facilitating student experience in the PathWays House and through internships, fostering relationships between the Chapel, the city, and the campus on organizational and interpersonal levels, and overseeing the Chapel s mission further afield. Bruce has a heart for work in Durham and for helping to build connections between the Chapel, students, the Congregation and the wider community. The work of the DCM builds on and dovetails with much of the ministry in which he is currently engaged through the Congregation. The Chapel and the Congregation leadership are sensitive to the needs of the Congregation as they search for a new pastor, and will work to ensure as smooth a transition as possible. While beginning his new role, Bruce will continue to lead the Congregation until the search process for a new pastor is complete. He will remain an active presence in leading Chapel worship.

Activity Bags (for children 5 and under) and Liturgy Boxes (ages 5-8) are available at the rear of the Chapel to help children engage in worship. Please return after the service.
