1 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Tenth Sunday after Pentecost August 5, 2007 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Scripture speaks to the simultaneously fierce and compassionate love of God. In Hosea, God s tenderness toward his people is profound this God is not one who left creation to spin on its own, but he actively loves his people and yearns for them, even in the face of human fickleness. In Colossians, Paul urges that God s people to set their eyes on Christ and to put aside those things that deform and distort the gospel. The passage in Luke speaks to the insidious nature of greed and the ways our possessions often come to possess us and lure us from encountering the true abundance found only in Christ.

2 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Duke Chapel is a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus; and it is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. 3 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel, located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a Service of Healing will be held in the Memorial Chapel. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. RECESSIONAL HYMN Today s recessional hymn is often associated with ceremonial events: the Peace of Westphalia at the end of the Thirty Years War, the completion of Cologne s great cathedral, Queen Victoria s Diamond Jubilee Celebration, and, in the recent past, annual University Baccalaureates in Duke Chapel. A closer look at Martin Rinkart s hymn, as translated by Catherine Winkworth, reveals a simple metrical grace before mealtime, a Tischlied, to which a version of the Doxology has been added. DEAN WELLS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SERIES On Sunday, August 12, at 4:00 p.m., Dean Wells will lead a discussion, Where is Home? Wonderings about Believing and Belonging. He will use the methods of Godly Play curriculum to explore our different attitudes about home and help us discover the journey between places of exile, freedom, and rest. This event will be held at the Lyon Park Community Center, 1313 Halley Street, Durham. Parking is plentiful and free. Adults, youth, and children are welcome. This is the third in a series of talks led by Dean Wells about community engagement. BACK-TO-SCHOOL COLLECTION The Local Missions Committee will be collecting school supplies for local students who have limited resources. Supplies may be dropped off in front of the Chapel today, or left in the back pews on August 12.
