1 Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Fourth Sunday in Easter April 25, 2010 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Icon of Christ the Good Shepherd. Each year on the fourth Sunday of Easter we read Psalm 23 and a gospel passage that speaks of Jesus as the good shepherd. This Sunday is therefore often known as Good Shepherd Sunday. Sheep are routinely considered to be silly, stubborn animals, and the shepherd comes to symbolize the loving care and attentiveness towards what would otherwise be unlovable. In both the Old and New Testaments, God is frequently identified as a devoted shepherd to his people. Today, marking the conclusion of the academic year, we will be saying goodbye to seniors, including those who have been members of the Chapel Choir, and commissioning seven Duke undergraduates for PathWays.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. 5 Thanksgiving This morning we give thanks for the foreign language departments of the university. We celebrate their role in educating students in the languages, literature, and culture of various ethnicities and the ways they prepare students to participate in contemporary political, social, and cultural life across national boundaries. The ushers bring forward a foreign language dictionary to the altar. In Durham, we remember those who suffer from depression, loneliness, or quiet desperation. Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers The flowers for today s worship service are given in memory of Senator Terry Sanford, the former governor of North Carolina and former president of Duke University, by the Terry Sanford Chapel Flowers Fund. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used for the Chapel Development Fund, which is the primary source of contributed funds for building care and preservation. The Chapel fulfills James B. Duke s desire that the building exert a profound influence on the lives of the young women and men who attend the university. Chapel Choir Today is the last Sunday for the Chapel Choir until the fall semester. We offer particular thanks to those choir members who are singing with the choir for the last time today. On the final Sunday of the academic year, the choir does not encircle the congregation for God Be In My Head, but it gathers in the narthex and encircles all the singers who are graduating and so are singing with the choir for the last time. Keeping Faith in Haiti Tonight at 7:00 p.m., the Congregation at Duke Chapel is sponsoring a conversation with Pastor Leon Dorleans, a pastor for several Christian community churches in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Pastor Leon will speak on the topic After the Earthquake: Keeping Faith in Haiti in Room 0012 Westbrook. Pastor Leon s visit comes as part of an ongoing relationship among the Congregation, Duke Chapel, Family Health Ministries, Pastor Leon, and his churches. 7 PathWays Summer Interns The PathWays Summer Internship is designed for Duke undergraduates interested in exploring their calling as Christians while living in community in the PathWays house and through employment in Durham nonprofit, government, faith-based, and ministry settings. The internship runs 8 weeks (June-July) and includes daily morning prayer, weekly discernment dinners, theological writing and reflection, service opportunities, and a mid-summer retreat. Daniel Barron, PathWays Scholar, Trinity 2012 Daniel is from Wyomissing, PA, majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and International Comparative Studies. He is currently studying abroad in Oman. He serves in the college ministry at the Chapel Hill Bible Church and is a member of Brownstone and the Outing Club. Daniel will intern at Reality Ministries, a community based, inter-church youth ministry organization. Liana Lau, PathWays Scholar, Trinity 2012 Liana is from New York City. She is on the pre-med track majoring in psychology with a French minor and a Certificate in Sexualities. She wants to be a pediatric psychiatrist. A city girl at heart, Liana loves the way God reveals himself through nature. She also enjoys reading and baking, especially if she can do both at the same time. Liana will serve the special needs population at Reality Ministries. Alice Mao, PathWays Scholar, Trinity 2011 Alice was born in Hunan, China. She is majoring in biology and has many passions including art, education, and community service. Last summer through Duke Engage, she taught underprivileged migrant children in the outskirts of Beijing and served on a medical missions team in Honduras. She is exploring health care, and will serve at Partners in Caring (PIC). PIC is a grant-funded component of the DUMC Pastoral Service Department and the DUMC Division of Infectious Diseases. Hillary Martinez, Trinity 2013 Hillary Martinez is from Irvine, CA. She loves reading, enjoying nature, spending time with her nieces and nephews, and traveling. She studied abroad in Frenchspeaking Belgium during her senior year of high school, which sparked her interest in the French language. She plans to major in English and earn a secondary education teaching license in English. Hillary will be working with the Child Evangelism Fellowship and Youth Life Foundation to share Christ and promote literacy through tutoring elementary and middle school students in Durham. Hannah Peckham, Trinity 2012 Hannah is from Arizona. She is double majoring in history and religion. Hannah chose to participate in the PathWays Summer Internship experience via her participation in the Service Opportunities in Leadership Program (SOL) sponsored through the Sanford School of Public Policy, Hart Leadership Program. Hannah s SOL project includes researching Durham churches and their involvement in local politics. Alex Sheen, PathWays Scholar, Trinity 2011 Alex is from Kilbeer, IL, and is majoring in biology. He is a PathWays Scholar and an active member of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at Duke where he leads a freshmen small group and serves as one of the musical worship leaders. Alex hungers to experience God s call in the health care arena. He will intern at the Division of Community Health, Duke University Medical Center. Troy Shelton, PathWays Scholar, Trinity 2011 Troy Shelton is from Lexington, NC, and is a history major and classics minor. Troy participates in the vocational discernment group led by Orthodox Christian Campus Chaplain John Stonestreet. He is president of Duke s Orthodox Christian Fellowship. Troy is pursuing a career in law, and will intern at the Durham County Courthouse under the supervision of the district court administrator.
