1 Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Fifth Sunday after Pentecost July 1, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Christ Healing the Woman With an Issue of Blood, by William Blake, c Purity is both an abiding theme and anxiety in culture and religion. Jesus profoundy reshapes our notions of purity. For him, purity comes not from avoiding guilt, dirt, or shame but from receiving forgiveness and healing. Our gospel from Mark 5 describes two women facing ritual impurities of death and menstruation; both find a deeper holiness in Jesus. Paul s words in 2 Corinthians focus on purity of motives.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. 5 Thanksgiving This morning we give thanks for the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). We celebrate its dedication to serving the Duke student community through deep care for students struggling with various forms of brokenness, and for helping students find wholeness and healing in mind, body, and spirit. 6 About Today s Guest Preacher This morning we welcome the Rev. Dr. Willie James Jennings as our guest preacher. Dr. Jennings is currently Associate Professor of Theology and Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School. For many years, Dr. Jennings served as the Academic Dean of the Divinity School. Dr. Jennings received his B.A. in Religion and Theological Studies from Calvin College (1984), his M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, and his Ph.D. from Duke. Dr. Jennings s recent book The Christian Imagination (Yale Press, 2010) received the American Academy of Religion Award for best book. Dr. Jennings also serves together with his wife, the Rev. Joanne L. Browne Jennings, as associate minister at the Mount Level Baptist Church in Durham. The Jennings are the parents of two daughters, Njeri and Safiya. Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Today s flowers are given to the glory of God by the Nan and Taylor Cole Chapel Endowment. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used for an emergency fund for disaster and recovery support for communities in our world that are affected by unexpected and sudden disaster (natural or otherwise). Your generosity enables the Chapel to respond quickly with financial support in times of acute crisis. Today s Guest Choir The Master s Men, an all-male a cappella ensemble, is dedicated to providing inspirational music to the glory of God. Established in 1995, they have appeared in over 250 churches in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Summer Choir Duke Chapel welcomes singers to its Summer Choir, which assists in leading worship over the summer months, except for July 8. Starting July 15, the choir is under the direction of Dr. Brian Schmidt, the Chapel s new Assistant Conductor and Administrative Coordinator of Chapel Music. Regular rehearsals are on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. Call for details. Visiting the Chapel The Chapel often has weddings booked on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons, especially during the summer months. If a wedding is taking place, visitors will not be permitted inside. Before visiting on a weekend, please call to learn when the Chapel will be open to the public.

Inviting Nursery Attendants The Congregation is seeking to hire weekly nursery attendants to assist with childcare each week during the worship service. Substitute attendants are also needed to help out occasionally. For more information, please contact Sonja Tilley at or First Fridays Young Adult/Professionals Dinner The Young Adult/ Professionals of the Chapel will meet for our monthly gathering on Friday, July 6, at 6:00 p.m. at Chipotle on Erwin Road. Bring your family and friends to enjoy the fellowship and food. All are welcome. Local Mission Collection for July The Local Missions and Out reach Committee is collecting items for Genesis Home. Genesis Home is a transitional shelter for homeless families with children and young adults located in Durham. Their mission is to end homelessness for families with children and for young adults by providing housing and supportive services. They foster independence by providing counseling, job placement, and follow up when they move to housing on their own. Genesis Home provides a safe place for families to live and become stabilized while providing the individual case management support necessary to become independent in permanent housing. Their ultimate objective is to end the cycle of homelessness for each family and client by building the overall capacity of the family to create a stable, healthy household. On Sundays July 8 and 15 the Congregation will participate in their Barrels of Joy program. There will be bright plastic buckets on the back pews for collected items. Needs include: wash cloths, towels, laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent, sponges, mops, brooms and dustpans, disinfectants, and cleaners. There will also be envelopes provided where you may make a monetary donation. Questions?
