1 DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Seventh Sunday after Pentecost July 15, 2007 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The Good Samaritan, by Hermine Shafer, c. 1960s What does it mean to be righteous? The scripture lessons this morning seek to answer that question. Amos uses the image of a plumb-line to show that the law of God is straight and upright, not bending to human whim. Amos preaches a courageous word, then and now, that disobedience carries with it judgment and consequences. The passage in Colossians focuses on the process of sanctification opening oneself to the fruit-bearing work of Christ and growing in love and service. Luke s gospel lesson is the classic parable of the good Samaritan. This story, filled with layers and depth, nettles our self-righteousness by reminding us of the extravagant love of God that can be experienced at the hands of strangers and outsiders.

3 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel, located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a Service of Healing will be held in the Memorial Chapel. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. VISIT MIGRANT LABORERS IN THE FIELDS Thanks to your generosity, the Congregation s Local Missions committee collected 30 farmworker kits earlier this summer. The National Farmworker Ministry is coordinating an opportunity for Duke Chapel to visit a nearby field, talk with migrant farmworkers, and share a meal together. It is an opportunity to learn from these nearly invisible workers who harvest the produce we eat. We will depart at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, returning around 8:00 p.m. Participants are asked to bring food for a potluck dinner. Registration is required (no cost). He will use the methods of Godly Play curriculum to explore our different attitudes to home and help us discover the journey between places of exile, freedom, and rest. This event will be held at the Lyon Park Community Center, 1313 Haley Street, Durham. Adults, youth, and children are all welcome. This is the third in a series of talks led by Dean Wells about community engagement.
