1 Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 26, 2010 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Congregation members preparing dinner at Durham Urban Ministries. Today we celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Congregation at Duke Chapel. The Congregation was established by Dean Will Willimon to offer an interdenominational church home to those who worship at Duke Chapel not just during semesters, but throughout the year. Its two former pastors, Margaret Via and Nancy Ferree-Clark, and both are participating in today s worship service, along with the current pastor, Bruce Puckett. Representatives among the founder members of the Congregation join the procession. During the sharing of communion all sing the hymn written by Richard Hays and David Arcus for the Congregation s twentieth anniversary in It is the Congregation that makes Duke Chapel a church, and the relationship between the Chapel and the Congregation has brought many mutual blessings that we celebrate today.
2 The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Gathering Carillon Organ Prelude Canzone Sigfrid Karg-Elert (from the Symphonic Chorale Jesu, meine Freude) ( ) Introit Ubi caritas Maurice Duruflé ( ) Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. The love of Christ has gathered us into one. Let us exult and be glad in him. Let us fear and love the living God. And with a sincere heart let us love one another. Amen. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) Gracious God, you call us to fullness of life: as your word is read in our midst, deliver us from unbelief and banish our anxieties with the liberating love of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving and Communion This morning we celebrate the Fuqua School of Business and its work in forming students to be ethical leaders in business, management, and entrepreneurship. The ushers bring a management textbook to the altar. We also give thanks for the Congregation at Duke Chapel and the many ways it enlivens the life of the University with their fellowship, discipleship, and service. A member of the Congregation brings forward a hand-carved Congregation emblem. In Durham, we remember organizations that provide access to capital for firsttime homeowners and small businesses. The ushers bring forward a house key.
4 *The Great Thanksgiving (Musical setting A, found on page 17 in the hymnal.) *The Lord s Prayer (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) Sharing of the Bread and Wine All those who have become members of Christ s body through baptism and seek to be united with God and at peace with their neighbor are invited to receive communion. Wine is used for communion. The tradition as understood at Duke Chapel is that the Holy Spirit makes Christ fully present in both the bread and the wine. If you receive only the bread, be assured that you are nonetheless in full communion with Christ and the Church. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion.
