1 Duke University Chapel Service of Worship Second Sunday in Advent December 6, 2009 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God St. John the Baptist by Anton Raphael Mengs, c Today we celebrate the second Sunday in Advent. The scripture passages this morning from Malachi and Luke both emphasize repentance. In Malachi, the Lord is likened to a refiner s fire, purifying and transforming the people of Israel to ready them to encounter God. Luke s gospel tells of John the Baptist preaching repentance in the wilderness and calling people to prepare the way of the Lord! The liturgical color of Advent is purple, which denotes penitence, a suitable mode for preparation to meet God.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will also be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Meghan Feldmeyer Today we welcome the Rev. Dr. L. Gregory Jones as our guest preacher. Dr. Jones is Dean and Professor of Theology at Duke University Divinity School. A noted scholar, teacher, and church leader, he is the author or editor of thirteen books, including Embodying Forgiveness and, most recently, Everyday Matters: Intersections of Life and Faith and the co-authored Resurrecting Excellence: Shaping Faithful Christian Ministry. He writes a regular column for The Christian Century, for which he is also an editor-at-large. Since 2007 he has served as President and CEO of Leadership Education at Duke Divinity (LEADD). He also writes a regular column for LEADD s web magazine, Faith & Leadership. He and his wife, the Rev. Susan Pendleton Jones, have three children: Nate (a first-year Duke Divinity student), Ben (a Duke sophomore), and Sarah. Today s Offering The December Mission of the Month is the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina that provides food for people at risk of hunger in 34 counties. The Food Bank serves a network of more than 880 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, emergency food pantries, homeless shelters, after-school and other programs for children and adults. It distributed more than 37 million pounds of food and non-food essentials last year. For each $1.00 you donate, 97 cents goes directly to feed the hungry. For more information about The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, visit About Today s Guest Musicians The Bell Ringers of First Baptist Church in Henderson, NC, have given concerts and taken part in major handbell festivals across the US. The seventh- through twelfth-graders who make up the group have many years of experience and training in handbell ringing. They ring three sets of handbells and two sets of handchimes. The bell collection is among the largest collections in the country. The Bell Ringers are a part of the music ministry of First Baptist Church, which includes five singing choirs, four handbell choirs, and an instrumental ensemble.

6 Chapel Announcements Continued Ecumenical Service of Lessons and Carols Tonight at 5:00 p.m. in Goodson Chapel (Duke Divinity School), the Chapel will be hosting an ecumenical service of Lessons and Carols in collaboration with various Duke campus ministries. The service is student-led and will feature a creative telling of the Advent story through scripture, song, and symbols. A reception will immediately follow the service in the Refectory. Student Preacher Sunday Sunday, February 7, 2010, is Student Preacher Sunday at Duke Chapel. A Duke undergraduate student will be selected to preach at the 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service in Duke Chapel. All Duke undergraduates are welcome to apply. Second Sunday Christmas Brunch Congregation members and friends are invited to attend the annual Christmas Brunch which will be held in the Chapel basement kitchen at 9:45 a.m. next Sunday. Heifer International For the eighth consecutive year, the children and youth of the Congregation are raising money to benefit Heifer International and help alleviate world hunger. Children s classes are selling greeting cards and the Youth Group is sponsoring the Living Gift Market, which allows donors to purchase bees, tree seedlings, cows, or other livestock to support poor families. Look for the children and youth by the front steps of the chapel following Sunday services from now through next week. Bethlehem Imports The World Missions committee will be selling goods from Bethlehem Imports in front of Duke Chapel following worship through next Sunday. These beautiful olive wood carvings, imported from Bethlehem, are handmade by Palestinian Christians. The proceeds of the sale will go to support the artisans and to provide scholarships for upcoming missions trips. Habitat House The Congregation at Duke Chapel is partnering with Duke students this fall to build a Habitat for Humanity house at 918 Morehead Avenue. Work has begun and will continue each Saturday until the house is completed. Anyone over sixteen years of age is invited to participate. 7 Messiah The Duke Chapel Choir, soloists, and orchestra will perform Handel s Messiah today at 3:00 p.m., in Duke Chapel. The choir and orchestra of this year s Messiah will be performing from the Chapel crossing, improving the clarity of the sound for the listener. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for non-duke students, and free for the first 300 Duke students.
