1 Service of Worship Fourth Sunday after Pentecost June 16, 2013 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Naboth in his Vineyard, by James Smetham, Today s Old Testament and Gospel lessons set up a contrast between the actions of two women. In 1 Kings, Jezebel schemes to kill an innocent man, Naboth, simply because he would not give her husband a bit of prime real estate. Jezebel s actions lead to destruction and condemnation. Luke tells the story of another woman, identified as a sinner, who gives care and affection to Jesus by anointing him and washing his feet with her hair. While Jesus companions scorn her actions, Jesus receives her gift and offers forgiveness. In contrast to Jezebel, the sinful woman s actions reflect life-giving hospitality and an opportunity to receive divine grace.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel, located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a Service of Healing will be held in the Memorial Chapel. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. Thanksgiving This morning we give thanks for the summer camps and other summer programs of the University. We celebrate how they encourage and train young people in atheletic and intellectual pursuits. The ushers bring a summer camp tee-shirt to the altar. We remember the Durham Police Department and its mission to partner with citizens in safeguarding the community, especially through the efforts of Partners Against Crime in each district. 6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Flowers for today s worship are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used for the Chapel Development Fund. Our current focus is to upgrade our cameras and video capabilities to digital and high definition in order to better serve the thousands of worshippers locally, in Duke Hospital, and around the globe who tune in weekly. Congratulations Bruce Puckett We congratulate the Rev. Bruce Puckett who was ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene last week, after having completed his time as a district licensed minister. Bruce, the Director of Community Ministry, was ordained in the North Carolina District at Ridgecrest Conference Center near Asheville on Friday, June 7. The Chapel community celebrates with him and looks forward to his ongoing ministry at Duke Chapel and in the Durham community. Summer Choir Duke Chapel welcomes singers to its Summer Choir June 30, July 14, 21, and August 11. Rehearsals for these Sunday services are at 9:15 a.m. on these Sundays in the chancel. 7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Local Missions Collection Believers United for Progress is a nonprofit agency that provides nourishing meals to children (ages 18 and under) in low-income areas of Durham. The Congregation s Local Missions committee is collecting large six-pound cans of green beans, corn, and fruit today and next Sunday, June 23. Each six-pound can serves twenty children. These cans are available at Costco, Sam s Club, and other stores that sell in bulk. Donations can be left at the back pew of the Chapel. Monetary donations are also welcome.
