1 Service of Worship All Saints Sunday November 4, 2012 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The Mystical Supper, icon by Simon Ushakov, Today we celebrate All Saints Day, which is a time for the Church to remember all those saints, known and unknown, who have gone before us and have faithfully walked the Christian path. The mood of this service is one of celebration and joy for all those people who have borne fruit for the kingdom by their service to Christ. The decades-long Duke Chapel tradition of celebrating All Saints by collaborating with area jazz musicians evokes the breadth of God s kingdom and the diversity of the communion of saints whose lives we celebrate today. Today we welcome new members into the communion of saints through the sacrament of baptism. Much of the bread used for communion today was made by the children of the Congregation, who will bring it forward during the offertory procession.

Thanksgiving and Communion This morning we give thanks in the University for the Duke School of Nursing. We celebrate its commitment to excellence in nursing sciences, clinical care, and research, and its desire to touch lives and offer transforming care to those suffering from illness and disease. A representative brings a world map to the altar, to represent the School of Nursing s influence that has stretched to many countries and in service to many families throughout the globe. In Durham, we give thanks for the saints who have shaped Durham by living lives that reveal God s kingdom locally. Wine is used for communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. You may also come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. Dedication of the Nancy Ferree-Clark Guesthouse On Saturday, November 10, a group of Congregation members, Chapel community members, and Family Health Ministry employees will gather in Leogane, Haiti to dedicate the Nancy Ferree-Calrk Guesthouse. Friends from the Chapel community raised over $100,000 for this projectin the summer of 2010 in honor of the Rev. Nancy Ferree-Clark and her many years of service to the Chapel and to the Congregation at Duke Chapel. Organ Recital Next Sunday, November 11, at 5:00 p.m., the second organ recital in the series will be presented by Parker Kitterman. A Duke graduate (Trinity 01), Parker is now Director of Music and Organist at historic Christ Church in Philadelphia. The recital is free and all are invited. Adult Forum On Sunday, November 11, Melissa Mills, Congregation member, will lead a discussion on Capitalism and Faith in the Words of Jesus. The forum will be held in Room 0012 of the Westbrook Building of the Divinity School at 9:45 a.m. Thanksgiving and Fellowship Next Sunday, November 11, after church, the fellowship committee invites you to a time of fellowship and light refreshments in the Chapel lounge.
