1 Service of Worship Fourth Sunday of Easter April 21, 2013 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Icon of Christ the Good Shepherd. Every year, on the fourth Sunday of Easter, the lectionary passages for the day include a gospel account that emphasizes Jesus as the good shepherd. The fourth Sunday in Eastertide is therefore often designated as Good Shepherd Sunday. In both the Old and New Testaments, God is frequently identified as a faithful shepherd to his people. This Sunday is a fitting time to reflect on Jesus as one who knows and loves his flock with persistence and devotion.

Thanksgiving and Communion This morning we give thanks for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. We celebrate the ways it shapes the imaginations of students in the ordering of public space and the questions of sustainable development. Ushers bring a hard hat to the altar. In Durham, we remember those people who work with adult education and literacy programs and in so doing offer hope and continued learning to those seeking new opportunities. Wine is used for communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, those serving communion nearest to the Memorial Chapel will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine on request. If you do not plan to receive communion, you may come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. If you would like to receive individual anointing with oil and prayers for healing, ministers will be in the Memorial Chapel during communion. 6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers The flowers for today s worship service are given in memory of Senator Terry Sanford, the former Governor of North Carolina and former President of Duke University, by by donors to the Terry Sanford Chapel Flowers Fund. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will support the Chapel s PathWays program, which offers undergraduates and recent graduates opportunities to hear and respond to God s call for their lives on campus, in Durham, and beyond, through study, counsel, service, and community. With gifts from donors, the Chapel supports 100% of PathWays programming expenses, which help participants connect their diverse talents and passions with the world s deepest needs. Today s Choir Anthems Chapel Organist David Arcus composed the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis settings sung this morning by the Chapel Choir to the glory of God and in honor of Sam and Jo Bailey Wells faithful service and inspired leadership during their years at Duke University ( ). The Magnificat (Song of Mary) and Nunc dimittis (Song of Simeon) are the two canticles from Evensong, a late afternoon/early evening service in the Anglican Church tradition. Today s canticles are paired to be sung in the same service, as is generally the custom. Chapel Choir Today is the last Sunday for the Chapel Choir until the fall semester. We offer particular thanks to those choir members who are singing with the choir for the last time. On the final Sunday of the academic year, the choir does not encircle the congregation for God Be in My Head, but rather gathers in the narthex and surrounds those singers who are leaving. If you are a student who is interested in joining the Chapel Choir next semester, please call Duke Chapel s summer choir will begin on May 19. The choir is open to all and is under the direction of Dr. Brian Schmidt. Regular rehearsals are on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. Spring Vespers Concert Today at 4:00 p.m., the Duke Vespers Ensemble will present Dietrich Buxtehude s rarely performed oratorio Membra Jesu Nostri. This oratorio is a 17th-century masterwork constructed of seven cantatas, each dedicated to one of the most holy limbs of our suffering Jesus. A professional orchestra of period instruments will join the Vespers Ensemble. As a complement to the music, Chapel Music has commissioned original artwork from artist Robyn Sand Anderson. These works are inspired by the text and music of the oratorio and will be displayed in the Chapel before the performance. The event is free and open to all. It will also be live-streamed on the Chapel s website for those who cannot be here in person.

Durham Circles of Support and Accountability Durham Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) is a program in which trained volunteers form a circle around sexual offenders returning to the community from prison. Such support has been proven to reduce incidents of reoffense by 70% or greater. On Thursday, April 25, 2013, Andrew McWhinnie will be in Durham to talk about CoSA in the Durham community. Mr. McWhinnie is a National Advisor to CoSA programs. The program includes dinner and will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Criminal Justice Resource Center (326 East Main St.). Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) Week Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network addresses the immediate and ongoing needs of homeless families by mobilizing Durham congregations and people of faith to help families move toward residential stability and self-sufficiency. IHN partners with over 30 local congregations to provide overnight accommodations, meals, and transportation for guests on a rotating basis. The Congregation is looking for volunteers to help the week of May 5-12 as it partners with the members of Antioch Baptist Church in Durham to host families. If you are available to prepare all or part of an evening meal and/or be overnight hosts for the families (staying overnight at Antioch Baptist), or want to learn other ways you can help, please contact Marilyn Christian at mchristian2@nc.rr.com, or call Dinner at Urban Ministries Each month the Congregation provides a meal for homeless guests at Urban Ministries of Durham. 8 Duke University Chapel Duke Chapel is a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus; and it is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy.
